re: Which is the best diesel 4WD (Not AWD) SUV under 22 lac INR?

Adding my two bits to the confusion !!
Pajero Sport Vs Fortuner.
PS - Better Ride at all speeds
- Better Interiors
- Better Seats
Fortuner - Better Engine
- Better Headlights
- Better Infotainment system
- Better Reliability in the long term (Toyota A.S.S Vs Mitsu)

Well if its purely 4X4 off roader - Than PS beats the Fortuner
If its an overall thing than Fortuner.

This is what makes any vehicle a better all rounder along with higher fuel efficiency, that amazing Super Select 4WD system, and higher power and torque outputs.

Bigger, doesn't mean better. However, for pure off roading the Fortuner has more bottom end grunt.

Apart from the face plate, the Sport sounds far better.

I havent heard of any Pajero owner complaining about reliability or maintenance.

It the other way round. For pure offroad, the Fortuner, with its grunty engine is better suited than the PS but for highway use, it is the PS.

Having said that, while I m greatly impressed by the Pajero Sport, its price is too high for my budget, atl least at the moment and hence it is wait and watch for some more time till I collect some money. If the Storme continues to have issues with owners, then the only option I d have is this, at the moment.

Saar,

Where is the Paj Sport drive report ? Above is a comparison, what about the actual drive report ?

Did you test drive the STORME ? A member of HVK forum has taken delivery of a STORME VX in PUNE few days ago.

After reading his initial impressions, I think you should go for the STORME and opt for any extended warranty. That will cover you for say 5 yrs.

You may have to plonk 16L OTR on the STORME VX and it is much cheaper than the PAJ and TFORT.

The PS report highlights will be up soon.

My Storme report too is available, though not here.

While I m thoroughly impressed by the Storme, I will wait for a few months to see how it performs w.r.t. niggles and issues, especially plastics, rubber and known Aria issues.

If the Storme performs, say, over the next 6 months, then there is no need to spend 10lac INR over it to buy the Fortuner or the PS.

Well, while the Pajero Sport impressed me on almost all counts, its head room at the middle row and its width at the middle row which makes seating 3 abreast an extremely intimate situation, took it out of the list, for now.

This apart, the Pajero Sport, today, I feel, is the best all rounder for 4 people and luggage in the country today, irrespective of the price.

Mod Note : Please do NOT use acronyms (e.g. ANHC, T-Fort, ANHV) when referring to cars. You are ONLY permitted to use the full Make & Model name for cars. This will make our content useful, searchable & easy-to-understand for experts & newbies alike.

Any further usage of acronyms will invite Moderator action on your account.

Thanks!

Notwithstanding your expertise on the subject, as a layman I feel the reason that Fortuner scores over PS is -
1. Engine - Negligible turbo lag at low rpms.
2. Seating - Broader/longer second row seating for 3 large adults.
3. Lights - Throw of xenons at high beam is better/longer.
4. Costs - Over a longer period 50,000 kms beyond, it's cheaper to maintain, and the Toyota ASS experience over Mitsu ASS.

Purely personal observations, Cheers!

Not all that evident in the city.

Broader, yes but seating for 3 in the Fortuner, no, due to that hard armrest frame jutting out of the seat. Both vehicles are 2 seaters in the middle row, though due to different reasons.

Correct.

While the cost differences are not more than 10% between the two, the ASC experience is yet to be seen. The current crop of SFX owners on TBHP are a happy lot.

Well, I'd almost closed the deal on the Pajero Sport but its inability to seat three people in the middle row, even for short periods left me unhappy. You could call it nitpicking but I will not spend INR 30 lac that easily. So the search continues. ..

Well your signature states otherwise, "Patience is bliss....".

Devdath, its really good that you are doing a deep research before putting down your hard earned money. Any updates on your Storme choice?

Also I see that you are interested in 19k run Montero. Any updates on that?

Well, contrary to my expectations, Storme owners have been experiencing loose nuts and bolts, ill fitting plastics and rattling on it. Not something I would want to face and resolve (though it is fun in its own sense) at this point of time.

My classmate picked up that vehicle and it is in ship shape. I'm jealous of him.

Hi Dev,

I have to give you the credit for making it easier for potential customers' like me! Going through your diligence, I guess it is prudent to say that the chance to make a bad choice is very less

This is a real worthy contribution from you to the TBHP and the auto community, as well. Provides the synopsis in a good yet from a critic point of view, keep it up and Thank you!

Thanks Surya, here is my next contribution...!!!

Vehicle: Mistubishi Montero June 2011, 16k kms done, single owner.

Journey: Bangalore to Kudremukh and back. A distance of around 800kms.

Occupants: Three.

Terrain: A mixture of broken roads, 4 lane highways, coffee estates, slush and hilly roads.

Fuel Efficiency: 8.5-9.5kmpl.

Speeds maintained: 120-130kmph on 4 lanes, 70-80kmph on the other roads, 20-30kmph on a few broken sections.

Summary:
This Montero belongs to my classmate.
The vehicle was a revelation on all counts. Luxurious interiors, that awesome Rockford Fosgate 12 speaker sound system, 5 speed AT gearbox, 3.2ltr engine with 202PS on tap, Mitsubishi Super Select-4 gearbox and a chiller of an air conditioner coupled with splendid handling on 4 laners and hilly roads.

The vehicle is a beau to drive and travel in. We took it offroad to a waterfall and it simply dismissed the slippery slushy Western Ghats surfaces and inclines without a whimper. On the road, it felt like it could go on and on forever, in superlative comfort.

The only grouse I had was the low seat squab of the middle row which would make passengers taller 5.8 uncomfortable over long distances in the middle row.

If I could get a Montero like my friend has, I would buy it hands down.

Enjoy Dev!

I wish I had the budgets to spend on a car for something like Montero.

In fact, if wishes were to become true, then my dream cruiser is a Land Cruiser

Will make enough money to buy one in near future, till then will flex a Fortuner!!
