Thanks, Harjeev. Let me try another run with your parameters, and see how it goes.

guys, I have option of buying a GPS device for around 120$. There are no maps in that, but it runs Windows CE, and has a Sirf Star III chipset.
Will I be able to buy software like destinator etc.,(windows CE compatible) for use with this device?

Guys, I'm a novice and I've no idea about this GPS reciever. I tried to read all the post in this thread but couldn't get much idea. My requirement is that I should be able to find my route in Bangalore and on highways. What should I purchase for this and what will be the total cost? Please let me know.

Cheapest option is this (assuming that your cell phone supports bluetooth and is a recent model)

You need to buy:

1. Bluetooth GPS receiver (3.5 to 5k)
2. Navigation software, free to try. Cost varies with package, number of cities etc

Or you can buy Maps + GPS device for around 15k.

Hmm..

So here is what I know:

1.) The best and most popular GPS Devices coems with Sirf Star III chipset
2.) If you want to take a GPS Mobile phone, it would be helpful if it has a-GPS i..e. assisted GPS which would use cellphone towers to identify your locationa dn that helps in locking your location faster.
3.) You dont need a internet connection for GPS :-)
4.) You can navigate easily in city and on Highways.
5.) For india, a win CE platform GPS system should do good because of more flexibility with maps
6.) I personally suggest a GPS phone like Asus P320 or Asus P526 which will cost 10K-11.5K and has GPS already built in.
7.) Maps would cost another 5K for licensed or FREE for Cracked versions
8.) I use an Asus P526 with All India Satnav Cracked Maps with destinator 7 software and its wonderful:-)
9.) A standalone GPS device can cost anywhere between 6K to 25K depending on the GPS Chip included, Brand, Screen Size, Warranty adn Maps

Hope this helps :-)

I use Nokia'a built in maps. Maps are quite detailed for Mumbai/Pune.

For sony, you can try mapmyindia's software. For details, you can check that online at :

MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!

Maps seem fine for the areas I checked. They have 5 day trial.

MGmaps in a messy state

After a lot of false starts, I managed to download map for Bangalore region with Harjeev's parameters. Loaded the map (MGMapCache) on to the N82 card. But ...

1. Storage on the card has really gone crazy >>
Using a GPS Receiver in the Car-mgmapscache1t.jpg

2. Storage on PC HDD is not THAT bad, but still doesn't make sense >>
Using a GPS Receiver in the Car-mgmapscache2t.jpg

3. Blessed thing keeps querying me (on N82) whether it should be allowed to access user data - a zillion times!

What / where have I done something wrong?

You need to install the signed version of mgmaps and set the file read/write permissions to "Yes, never ask again" or something like that. Note that this never ask option comes up only for the signed version of mgmaps.

DerAlte, your symptom is typical of FAT systems with like 32 kb clusters. Comp would be FAT 32, which can take like 4kb even (techies please help).

basically you have these micro tiles in gadzillion numbers - since the minimum size of a file on your phone is much bigger than on hdd (say 32 kb vs 8 kb), so the 100 mb data actually resides in 900+ MB.

What can be done - techies to help

DerAlte, which mobile phone will you be using for the GPS? I am using a HP hw6828 Windows Mobile phone and I am using a Hash Level of 1 and 256 tiles per file. I have all of India here upto level 17 and the total size is 340MB and the number of files are also manageable. You can try what works best for your phone in terms of speed and then stick to that.

I downloaded directly on the mobile from mgmaps. I think there was a jar and a jad option, but I don't remember which one I downloaded (one of them had a problem, so I used the other one). Which one is the signed one?

Makes sense. I somehow need to reduce the number of files.

N82. That sounds like a good plan - let me download once again. Do you have Google or Yahoo India? How was the download 'experience'?

The current file count and size problem leaves the N82 in tangles. Mgmaps takes an aeon to load (for some reason it is not loading this morning; it was working last evening), never appears in the running apps list and generally slows everything else down.
