Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

This Chevy is seen in a 1930's movie. It may have some connection with Dadi Bulsara. Any idea which movie this was? There may be some more cars seen in that movie.
This image is copied from a photo, not original, hence not so clear.

Could well be a Standard Herald. Going by the steering center arm shape and the sharp tail fin behind her.

I dont see why there should be any difficulty in recognising it in this section of team bhp!
Unless dr.anjan was actually doing a harit, if you know what I mean!

Yes of course it IS a Herald!
An early (1961-62) Standard Herald mk1, to be precise.
The dashboard was a Black "portafleck" one (although IIRC in this car, twas done up in red paint or rexine) made of pressed cardboard, with a chrome strip along the center and a huge Jaeger Speedo cum fuel guage.

This is the scene where Sharmila teaches driving to Shashi Kapoor in the Herald on the streets of Delhi.

Here's another pic. of the same car used in this scene:

PS: I agree that the one in the Dara Singh pic. (background) would have been a Herald as well.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Dev Anand's career spanned more than 65 years with acting in 114 Hindi films of which 104 have him play the main solo lead hero and he did 2 English films.
He is seen here in pictures from the film Taxi Driver (1954).

Above (a Filmfare archive photo) : with his Fiat 1100 Select. He loved Fiats and Premiers. When asked, he would simply say that these cars are helpful to camouflage his identity in the Bombay traffic. In his hey days, only a select few owned imported cars.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

More images from the comedy film Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). For those who have not watched it, please do so. Its a treat to see the Bombay traffic of those times. And no other comedy film from Bollywood can match this one ! Its a superbly directed film by Mr Satyen Bose, featuring the three Ganguly Brothers (Ashok, Anup and Kishore) at their prime.

Sentiments about the car by Mr Shammi Kapoor :

[quote]

I had seen the beauty I wanted:

" It was a skyblue colored, convertible; Buick Super; second hand. It belonged to then film actress Nigar Sultana, who wanted to sell it and it was on display at the Car Mart, at Hughes road. My friend and first producer, Aspi Irani, who I was signed with but had no picture on the floor, knew the owner of Car Mart, Mr. Chunnawala and so off we went to meet and negotiate for the car. He agreed to a pricetag of Rs. 16,500/-, to be paid on a monthly basis Hire purchase for 24 months. The down payment of Rs. 5000/- was to be paid by Aspi. For the next 2 years I paid Rs. 650/- every month almost regularly. It was on the 12th of June, 1952 that I got my Buick. It's registration number was BMY 3009.

Subsequently in my life span as a Film Star, I had a number of different cars; a Desoto followed by a Chevy Belair, a Chevy Impala, a Chevy Intercontinental convertible, a Ford Thunderbird, a Sunbeam Alpine, a Triumph, a Malibu some foreign and Indian Fiats and a number of Jeeps for my Shikar. But to this day the one and only beauty which has always remained dear to me in both my memory and my heart is, the BUICK BMY 3009.
