Until when did your uncle have it? So did he bring it down to Hyderabad from Nagpur and have it here? Do you recall the number of the car (atleast the hyd. one)?

Sir,

I don,t have any photo of Std.Companion. Actually my uncle was in to the
bussiness of buying and selling cars. He sold this car within a week after
taking it to Hyderabad. He was in this business since 1960 and had driven
almost all the classic cars, which we are discussing in this forum. I develped
passion for cars thru him only. Unfortunately now he is no more.

Hi
In 1954 Bombay had mainly Hillmans, only 3 passengers allowed. Before that the cabs used to be Morris Tigers.Landmasters and Fiats came susequently.
Incidentally Bombay had the so called big taxis in which 4 passengers were allowed. Most of the cabs were Ford V8s/Chevrolets and few Dodges. The alphabets prefixing the numbers were BMT.
The movies like taxi driver and aar paar had the hero as a cab driver and they used to drive these big taxis.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Heralds galore! That too all early ones!

MSW 6009 appears in a popular early 60s Telugu movie starring the then stars A Nageswar Rao (ANR) and N T Rama Rao (NTR). The car has the rare chrome bumper cappings (how I wish I could get those!) first driven by ANR, then metamorphed midway into one with a different colour scheme sans the chrome cappings! but the same number sincerely maintained!

It's driven by NTR for the rest of the movie.

Also a brief glimpse of another car what appears to be a Standard 'flying 8' tourer (convertible)

And yet another early Herald with the chrome bumper cappings in another (1962) Telugu movie- this time a Hyderabadi one! 'wonder if it still survives!

The Standard Flying 8 and the Herald together indicate that the film maker may also have been a Standard lover.

Yes that was ANR in the second movie as well.

And here's another NTR starrer, this time a treat for Fiat fans- a lovely Select with an equally lovely numberplate! 'wonder if it survives?

And a nice two-tone Companion, albeit showing minor signs of wear going by the broken rear lights. Incidentally, my 1962 Companion was originally MSV 2219 so MSV 2320 was just a little later.

Incidentally, all Telugu movies back then were shot in Madras until around the late 70s/early 80s.

And another car, a Yank one that isnt seen clearly so I'm not able to identify- Dodge?

And lastly a mk1 Amby.

I think its a late 70s movie 'Agar Tum Na Hote'? Rekha acts as his wife in it? There is a scene where he gets down from the golf and a VW camper is parked behind it.

Meanwhile, some nice wheels from a 1970 Tamil movie.

The Chevy is fitted with Fiat 1100 side indicators! and also what looks like a cool 'shikar' light on the right A-pillar!

A treat for Fiat fans- the 1100D appears throughout the movie, driven by the heroine Lakshmi (subsequently of 'Julie' fame in Bollywood)
Car must've been brand new or almost then.

Note how the side patti on the rear door is missing in one scene but is miraculously restored in the later scenes in the movie!

Fiat MRX 5689, probably the very famous car used in a number of movies.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Back with a couple of cars from another 70s Telugu movie. The maroon car is a Rover, which I'd spotted in a Tamil movie that was nearly a decade older, and posted pics. of here earlier. twas in much better condition then. with the front windscreen and top intact, plus most of the hubcaps too.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Film Howrah Bridge (1958) filmed on the Calcutta streets, the song is lip synced by Om Prakash and sung Mohammed Rafi with music by O.P. Nayyar.
It is an excellent depiction of the Calcutta streets (mostly Central Calcutta) of its times with so many cars to be seen. I am fascinated by the sight of so many Landmasters, like never before! There are other including Hindustan 14's,Fleetmasters, Vanguards, Austins, Morrises and many, many others.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Not exactly an old movie but a rather recent Telugu one, 'Dubai Seenu' surprisingly with a 4-door Herald used in the final/climax scene. Unfortunately its a fight scene so the car ended up getting bashed up, blown up/burnt and having the bad guys thrown all over it! Ironically it didnt even play any rols in the movie other than being a stationary victim of the abuse, for which they could've surely used any other car?!

And ironically again, twas a very complete car with all the fittings intact- all burnt away, the bonnet badge, trims etc.!!
