Thanks Karl for the prompt update. Guess we will have to wait for the Mumbai Rally/Cartier to see the car.

Baroda Packard

A Baroda Packard with a cricketing galaxy - C.K.Nayadu, Sardar Ghorpade and Syed Mushtaq Ali with the Gaekwar.

Looks like a convertible sedan, is she still around ?

Saw this beautiful 1947 Packard Clipper 8 at Ajit Bhavan in Jodhpur. Nice fine example.

Here is something that comes closest to corroborating the story of the Maharaja painting his car to match his Maharani's pink slippers! If my memory serves me, the car in the "story" was a Packard

Here is a picture of 1930 Packard 740 Limousine ex- Nawab of Bahawalpur which is identical to the car quoted above having RHD steering and similar cloth interior, with leather in front compartment, except this car was originally sea green. The partition as well as rear compartment doors were dark green for purdah purpose. It has Bijur chassis lubrication system, It also has pull down silk screens, a dictagraph cord mounted cigar lighter, a car phone for instructions to the driver and a waltham clock in the rear.
1930 Packards have beautiful headlights, sharing the top three slot with Lucas P-100 DB's , and Stephan Grebels of the vintage years. This model has a four speed gearbox with the first gear curiously placed next to 2nd under a strong spring detent. A lot of people never realized it has four gears as its advised to start off in 2nd and first is only used to start off on an incline. It is pertinent for the younger members to note that in the 1930's having more than three speed gear box was frowned upon as an indication of lack of pulling power from the engine and most car makers would rather not show more than three gears. The engine is a straight eight with a harmonic balancer mounted on front of crankshaft. Brakes are simple but effective ( for its time) wire rope operated, un assisted. This car has the then preffered solid wheels as opposed to the usual wire wheels which made Packards a favourite among chauffeurs for ease of cleaning as well as covered side mounts. It rides on 7.50 X 19 tires with 45psi and that gives a wonderful ride and reasonably light steering. The headlight knob is in the steering hub which connects via a shaft to a switch mounted at the end of the steering box. The car is 6volt +ive earth and the starter is direct foot switch without a solenoid. And last but not the least the accelerator pedal is mounted in between the clutch and the brake pedals, as required for the proverbial heel and toe operation of accelerator and brake.
I thought I would put in a bit of technical stuff which usually remains not commented upon on this excellent forum.

Thanks Shyml for the picture and the description. I had never seen this car before in all of the ex-Bahawalpur car writeups on the web

re: Packards in India

This car supposedly is a 1932 Packard Twelve Phaeton in a Bhopal Garage in 1989.

Wonder if it one of the ex-Patiala cars. Where is she now ?

re: Packards in India

This does not look like a 12 and more like the Ex Jabhua 8 Phaeton car which came in the first Cartier in Mumbai which was in Indore for a while.

Cheers
