That looks to be what's left of a 22nd-23rd Series, 1948-1950 Packard convertible. What a shame, those cars are rare even here in the US.

Yes this is a rare car. In fact the car and a even rare Auburn were used as wedding cars in a place called Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Both the cars were dieselised with Perkins engines. Both these cars came to Bangalore. The Auburn was fitted with a Studebaker V8 engine and was sold to North India. It was re-bodied and survives.

This Packard does not have the engine and gear box and is owned by some one who does not live in Bangalore. I guess the work will start once they find a suitable engine and gear box which seems to be a big mountain to climb. Even I wait for the day this car is restored to its full glory.

Cheers

1948 Packard 22nd Series 8

There were two such cars in Mumbai - 1) used by a garage for film shoots and was white in colour. no where abouts till date but survives. 2) And another by a private collector and was Navy Blue and was once restored by a garage in Worli and was called President Garage. This car was a RHD as far as I remember. A wonderful orignal example.

Happy Findings..

I have a suitable engine and gearbox in my garage, but I'd imagine that the shipping from Kansas to India would be rather steep.

The white film shoot cars survives, albeit in similar condition. The navy blue one I do not know about. But, there was a black one in excellent condition belonging to a shipping magnate. Surely strikes a bell? A 1949 car came from Rajkot and was sold on to Hyderabad, must be still there. A torqoise blue car came from Hyderabad, and is with moi.

The picture's rather small but I'd venture to guess it's not a Packard, as Packards don't have a grille that has a piece hanging down in the top center like that car appears to have.

Difficult to pin-point from such a small image; not a Packard, but it does look like a 1920s Marmon to me.

Thanks for sharing. Do you have any history on the car? Hopefully we should see her at next week's event.

As far as my knowledge goes, the car initially belonged to a judge from the Allahabad high court. The car was than sent out to Pakistan and returned to India under ownership of the same person in the mid 1950's. The car was than sold to the current owner who is Mr. Nitin Dossa in the 1980's.

re: Packards in India

Hi Yash, what a coincidence that you spotted Nitin uncles Packard.
This car came from Lucknow, was in Bandra with German Motors from where Nitinbhai bought her. I saw the registration book there, the car had spent time in Karachi and came back to India before partition. Even in Karachi the registration was BMW.
I had put up a picture of this car when she was black and the radiator shell was removed.
Very nice restoration by Mr. Vakil in Pune.

Cheers harit
