Next-gen Wrangler to be an EV & offer better off-road capabilities

The next-gen Jeep Wrangler EV will be based on Stellantis' large-STLA architecture.

According to media reports, Jeep CEO Christian Meunier has confirmed that the next-generation Wrangler off-roader will come with a pure-electric powertrain.

Jeep already has an electrified version of the off-roader in the form of the Wrangler 4xe. Meunier stated that in the first quarter, 38% of all Wranglers sold were the 4xe models. He added that by the year-end, Jeep expects this percentage to go up to 50 - 60%. The company boss mentioned that customers aren't being forced to purchase the 4xe variant; instead, they are themselves realising that they can visit the petrol station less by driving the off-roader in electric mode for up to 20-25 miles (up to 40 km).

Speaking about its off-road capabilities, Meunier explained that Jeep will push the next-gen Wrangler EV's Trail Rating to 12 out of 10; meaning it will be even more capable off-road than its current ICE-powered version.

The next-gen Jeep Wrangler EV will be based on Stellantis' large-STLA architecture. Reports state that the Wrangler EV is expected to make its debut by 2027 at the earliest.

Brought home a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon: Likes, dislikes & overall mileage

Overall mileage stands at 9.4 kml tank to tank.

BHPian pramods recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Buying a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is a heart-based decision. Most of us internally have a secret desire to have Rubicon, if not 4-door, then definitely the 2-door version. Unfortunately, Jeep only has two versions in India: Unlimited, called Sahara elsewhere in the world, and Rubicon. I had a hard time deciding on a more logical Sahara vs not so logical Rubicon. I have been in this situation before and made the wrong choice of going with 1200 GS, and I paid the price by doing a GS to GSA conversion on my own.

GSA experience solved the problem, and it must be Rubicon!

The buying experience was smooth, and I got the delivery in a week. The dealer suggested I wait and take the delivery in January or wait and get it registered in January, a valid suggestion; nonetheless, I wanted it to be as soon as possible.

I completed the payment formalities on 22nd December, and the vehicle was in the dealer's yard on 26th December.

Some of the pre-delivery inspections snap.

28th December, RTO formalities are done and ready for delivery. A moment I have been waiting for a long, long time.

The first thing was to ride out and fill petrol, a huge 81-litre tank (the dealer had filled in 10 litres, so it was 71 litres for me).

First Refuel at 94 kms.

70.91 litres

Once on the road, the thing was to test how it would behave on the highway and what it would take to leave with Rubicon. The plan was to take the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway and spend the night on the road, experiencing two new things Nagpur-Mumbai expressway and Rubicon. You have to force yourself to be attentive. The road is arrow straight with right banking making steering possible without any input from your side. Once you have crossed the entry toll booth, put the car on cruise control, and that's it. Boredom sets in as you are not doing anything, which may be very dangerous; if something pops up, you may need to be in the right state to respond!
I did 600 km on the expressway. The ride was good for the driver but could have been better for the passenger: Rubicon passenger seats, both front and rear as not that comfortable.

A total of 336 kms drive.

Back home and resting before an off-road ride.

On day 2 of having Rubicon, I got in touch with an off-road trail club at Nagpur, Team Xtreme Adventure Club Pvt Ltd. They have a private off-road trail for off-roaders and went for a whole off-road experience in Rubicon.

Enjoy some of the off-road images. Unfortunately, I did not get my camera, drone, or other equipment to record this event. Nonetheless, I would be doing this complete trail next time (I completed only two trails, ordinary mud and rock) .

Jeep have to finally tow this out, it was royally stuck on chassis and nothing was working. Either a winch or a pull was required and there were only two of us!

Overall, I have got 9.4kmpl tank to tank, a good part of the trip and the fuel computer in Jeep is very accurate, both manually calculated and the system computed as matching. I am hoping to get on to off-road trail more often  with Rubicon.

Wrangler owner from USA drives my modified Thar in India: Impressions

Driving position and high ground clearance are very confidence-inspiring in Indian conditions.

BHPian shankar.balan recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I had all this done mid last year after I bought the Thar.

  1. Complete underbody armour - Aluminium was about Rs 34K.
  2. Rear diff guard in mild steel was about Rs 4.4K
  3. Side steps/ Rock sliders were about Rs 24.5K
  4. AVO suspension 4 Dampers and 2 Coil Springs were about Rs 1.1 L
  5. Philips Halogen H4 55 W 12V Bulbs are available on Amazon for about Rs 1750-1850 the pair.

While the above investments in these upgrades may seem expensive, I personally am happy that I went for this because the resultant ride comfort and handling and overall peace of mind more than makes up for the expense incurred.

In all honesty these upgrades have now enabled me to Explore the Impossible, with one important additional qualification - ‘Fearlessness’.

The picture below was taken at the ‘5 Acre viewpoint’ in Kadamane Estate, Sakleshpur, sometime this March. Since the picture perfectly embodies the spirit of the Thar in terms of ‘Exploring the Impossible, and Fearlessly too, Ive made an NFT of it on Momint.

There is one more anecdotal thing I am going to say here. Please do not consider this as a ‘fanboy’ comment or a comment based on any other bias. This is simple plain honest independent feedback nothing else.

Two weeks ago one of my classmates from school had come down from the US. He is a senior chap in a blue-chip company and had bought a bone stock 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited Sahara for his older son who has now just about finished college. Their family uses this Jeep Wrangler for road trips, exploration, just general trail driving and all in and around various parts of North America.

Since this pal of mine was visiting, some of us classmates took a couple of days off and went to Bheemeshwari fishing camp and Galibore and other places. I drove my Thar and this friend came with me as my passenger. During the journey and the trip, he also drove my Thar across different terrain.

On the way out we took the Mysore road and branched away after Ramanagaram. So it was a good mix of highway and rural roads and some trails while there.

His comments after driving it were:

  1. It feels as light and easy as a car.
  2. Driving position and high ground clearance are very confidence-inspiring in Indian conditions.
  3. The ride and handling are significantly superior as compared to his Jeep Wrangler - the Wrangler transfers all the road imperfections to the passengers and makes for a much harsher jiggly ride.
  4. The suspension and damping effect is far more comfortable both on the tarmac highway and on the trails as compared with his Jeep Wrangler.

On the way back from Bheemeshwari one more of my classmates sat with us as a passenger in the back seat. We used the Kanakapura road approach on the way back. And her feedback from the back seat was that she was absolutely comfortable throughout with no untoward and discomfort-causing movements.

So my pal from the US is now going to upgrade his Jeep Wrangler’s suspension with something suitable in the US. I've given him some suggestions to look at but his best bet very probably is the MOPAR upgrade itself.

Anyway, long story short, this has served as an important and independent view/ further approbation to me, as regards my decision to upgrade the Thar suspension to AVO.
