The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

Bought the Garmin Fenix3 Saffire edition in December. Lived with it for around 4 months now. It's really very accurate and will monitor and track almost every activity. I have played golf, swam, trekked, and walked.

It has navigation, gps, glonas, temperature, compass, altimeter etc..

You can set upto 8 data screens per activity. To show calories burnt, distance, speed, heart rate etc..

Truly orn of the best outdoor watches. If you are an outdoor person than this is the watch to have. It comes with both a metal strap and a rubber strap.

More importantly it looks good too. I don't use the smart watch functions on it so cannot comment. Though have tried it a few times.

Got a mi band few months back, seems like a gen 1.0 experiment from Xiaomi.
Will wait for few generations before spending one on another from them.

I think I have asked this before but didnt get any convincing response then.
Has anyone tried any of these bands or watches while lifting weights and found them of any use?

I use my Microsoft band while working out, that includes weight. I feel it is useful and doesn't count steps while lifting weights, Mi band and goqii band did that.

But then I'm not aware of any kind of data the bands can pick up while lifting.

I use a Garmin Vivofit 2 fitness band and it is reasonably accurate which is good enough for me. It is waterproof as well. The best thing about is it doesn't need to be charged frequently as it uses a watch type battery which can last up to a year.

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

My new Surge is also misbehaving wrt GPS functions. It is as erratic as the earlier one. So, it seems that the problem is generic to all Surge devices.

Besides this, I have noticed a lot of other issues - it tracks steps during a cycling activity, thousands of them!!! It also tracks a scooter ride as a cycling activity!!!

Support people from Fitbit point to various pages on their website, explaining how the tracking is done. I tell them that forget your algorithms, your device is doing all kinds of wrong tracking! They are yet to acknowledge it.

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

I recently moved from a Mi Band to the FitBit Charge HR.

Below are my observations.

FitBit Charge HR

+ves:
  • Looks
  • Comfort
  • Continuous heart rate monitor
  • Can be used like a watch for date/time
  • Counts floors

-ves:
  • One Charge lasts 4-4.5 days
  • Inaccurate steps, overly sensitive, counts even when seated
  • Sleep data also not so accurate as Mi Band, Mi Band used to show awake times even if I wake up and check my phone for 2-5 mins, this doesn't

Hoping that upcoming firmware updates would address these shortcomings.

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

I am looking for something without GPS for my wife. Does the Garmin FR 60 make any sense? Or is it too outdated to buy today? I liked this review if the product very much.

She intends to use the watch to mainly count steps while walking or light running/jogging on the treadmill or otherwise.

If these are the requirements, why not just go for the Mi Band? It's really worth it.

It's not available on the MI website or Flipkart. Overpriced on Amazon.

Where else can I check?

I have no idea. I bought it from the Mi Website. I think the one on Amazon is the model with the Heart Rate Monitor was was not sold in India. Probably Mi has taken off the old Mi Band from their website as they are planning to introduce the new one (with Heart Rate Monitor).

Query from a night shift employee

Does Huawei Watch track the sleep in day time? My Mi Band doesn't do and I've heard that even Apple Watch doesn't track sleep if it is in the day time.

I am looking for some fitness band that can track my swimming activity. Would require some advise from those who have been using it for this purpose & which brand of fitness band should I go for?

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

Slightly OT, but a tip...... from my folly.

I had got Fitbit alta as a gift for my brother, I was keen on getting size Small for a neat fit. While focusing on the size, I looked at the band color on the box and got a 'black' one.

It was 'black' till I got home and tore open the box. Only then I realized it is a shade of purple, on checking the box, in small fonts on the side, it said 'plum'.

In the end I had to get a black replacement band. Bundled it all into a small unsuspecting box and surprised him.

So, please, turn the box on to the side, read out the COLOR which is in small fonts, don't go by the color on the box that you see in the store. Store lights play tricks.

(or... maybe... I am color blind )

sample pic from the net.
