Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

My dad is looking for a smart watch with a square dial, waterproof, and which has a heart rate monitor as well. It has to be under 10k. Is there any reliable option for this?

Amazfit Bip. Its waterproof to some extent, but might not survive a swim or a shower. Costs around 6K at amazon ($70 at Aliexpress or if you can get it from the US.)

I have been using it for an year now, very happy!

Thanks but does the Mi band 3 come close to the Samsung Gearfit2 Pro or fitbit in terms of functionality. Its a 2 grand fitness vs 9K fitbit.

I'm ready to spend 10K but should be good quality and stable. Don't want dad figuring out Mi band software.

I have been using FitBit Charge 2 for the past 2 years and it is very good with heart rate tracking and even after 2 years, the battery lasts 5 to 6 days on a single charge. So if 24x7 heart rate is a priority, I would go with FitBit which has a proven track record.

I also like other features in Fitbit like sleep tracking, automatic activity detection (walk, run, cycle etc), and the weekly challenges that can be created among friends for motivation etc.

However, I do not have experience with Samsung Gearfit 2. It is possible that Gearfit is as good as or better than Fitbit

This is because of the 'racist' upgrade to the watch's firmware. On the first few firmwares, the heartbeat would get detected just fine. But seems that they tuned it for white skin, and hence dark skin heartbeat detection got worse. Some black folks were unable to use this function anymore!

For getting heart beat, you can simply twist the watch on the arm so that it is facing inside of the forarm, and then check the heart beat. Since the skin is thin there, and the area comparatively brighter than upper forearm, the heart beat is detected easily.

Vid- i am using mi band 3 since launch and bought it mainly for heart rate functionality. App is also easy to use. The band 3 is 3k. I am not facing any issues. It tracks even resting heart rate while sleeping.

I was strongly considering buying the Samsung Gearfit2 Pro (there were a lot of unboxed pieces on sale sometime back when Samsung/Harman gave it to their employees (who in turn put it up on OLX for sale). Unfortunately the reviews are very poor. I regularly followed Samsung Forums to see way too many issues - primarily around battery life, accuracy of step counts, dropping dead without reason.

More here -

Have heard good reviews about
1. Honor Band 4 (budget-tier)
2. Honor Watch Magic (mid-tier)
3. Huawei Watch GT (top-tier)

Personally, I have only had an experience with Mi Band 2 (which i thought was basic, simple and excellent for what it offered). The best aspect of Mi Band 2 was decent step count tracking and unbelievable battery life (typically I would get around 30 days). However got bored of it after an year, plus the screen brightness reduced considerably, prompting me to switch.

Switched to Myntra's Blink Fit, which has a color screen - quite cool at the price range. However the battery life sucks (3-4 days max) and the app by itself is quite basic.

Anyone going for the Samsung Galaxy smartwatch? Eyeing a Note 9 which comes bundled with a Galaxy watch for 10k more.

Fossil USA has some superb discounts across their entire range!

Thanks. You successfully swayed me away from Gearfit2 Pro. I would have bought it at 8K on Flipkart sale today.

Instead got the Fitbit Charge2 @ 6,750 from Flipkart sale.

Placed order for Mi Band 3 yesterday. I cancelled it today after reading about Honor Band 4.
It should be launched on Amazon soon.

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

I've been pretty interested in knowing what the hype is about the Apple Watch series 4. It is due to an incident to a very close family member that I got pretty interested in Cardiology and the study related to it.

https://twitter.com/american_heart/s...286974464?s=12
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2018/12/06/h...iew/index.html

TLDR version of what I understood:

1. If you feel the symptoms which could be related to a heart attack(and the watch doesn't indicate anything,) call the Ambulance immediately. Seek medical attention ASAP:
The ECG of the Apple watch is nowhere going to be accurate compared to the full-fledged ECGs used in hospitals. It is never going to detect all the problems a full-fledged ECG can. (In more technical terms, it doesn't have the resolution of a full-fledged ECG as it has 1 electrode instead of 12)

2. If you get a warning from the Apple watch, DO NOT ignore it and get consult your cardiologist ASAP:
It could be a sign of an impending problem. It is better if you (or preferably someone else) drive(s) to a hospital before a problem seriously affects you rather than ignoring the signs and entering the ER in an ambulance.

Are you looking for a buyer for the Galaxy watch and don't intend to keep it for yourself?

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

Been using the Mi Band 3 close to a year now but got tired of its monochrome screen and narrow face. I now wanted something colourful but not looking garish, good with notifications and my most important criteria: great battery life - used to Mi’s amazing battery. Don’t care much about fitness tracking or other features like heart rate monitoring.

I didn’t want to spend a fortune so limited my budget to 16000.

Shortlist:
Amazfit Verge
Huawei Watch GT and Magic
Ticwatch E
Fitbit Versa
Suunto 10
Amazfit Stratos
Numerous nameless Chinese watches

Huawei Watch GT: Saw a good deal on amazon for 16000. Watched numerous YouTube videos. Great battery life and features. Liked the looks too. I rejected it for two reasons: no always on display and boring watch faces. Of course, found it overpriced. Briefly considered the much cheaper Magic but I didn’t like how it pushed the notifications. It uses a generic icon for all notifications leaving you to guess where that message is from.

Ticwatch E: What a beautiful watch! Especially in ice white, it’s an absolute banger. Also comes with Wear OS, meaning, you can install custom apps from Play Store. Much cheaper too, at 10000 quid. The biggest problem? Dismal battery life. In fact this seems to be an inherent problem in all their models. With standard usage, you hardly get through a day. I have enough gadgets plugged into my wall for charging every night; can’t stand seeing a watch needing a charge every night. Sometimes I travel overnight and I need my watch handy on my wrist. Loved this watch for its looks, features and price but sadly rejected it.

Fitbit Versa: Liked the squircle shape and interface. Good features too but at 16k it didn’t feel special enough. It was stretching my budget but felt I wasn’t getting my money’s worth.

Suunto 10: I have a confession to make. I loved this watch for one reason: it was a Finnish company. I go weak in my knees for anything Scandinavian. But the fact remains though that this watch is made in China, so there goes its Finnish heritage.

Amazfit Stratos: Full disclosure - I’m a huge Xiaomi fan. My phone, TV and my watch are mi. Love the company for its customer centric approach. If you look at their forums, you’ll notice they really understand the pulse of the customer. And Huami being their sister brand, I knew what to expect. The Stratos is a great watch but didn’t like the backlit LCD it came with. I know LCD is great to view in sunlight but unlike an OLED, the colours don’t pop out and the black lacks contrast.

Checked out all the funnily named and nameless fancy Chinese watches. Very cheap in price and also in perceived quality. The UI is riddled with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Perhaps the watches themselves are great but such errors mar user experience.

Amazfit Verge: OK, if you haven’t guessed it by now, this is the watch I bought. For the price point 12k, it comes loaded with features and the amazing battery life I was looking for. It comes with an AMOLED display and has watch faces that I really liked. The reviews have been positive and hopefully should serve my purpose. The watch is getting delivered today as I type and I can share a few pictures or details if anyone’s interested.

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

I have been using Samsung Gear S2 since 3 years, paid 24K. I am very happy with the accuracy of step counts, many a times I have cross checked with manual count and matches 100%. It is so smart while driving in cars, step count stops automatically. Heart beat is checked and recorded automatically 3 to 4 times in a day.

Most I like in smart watch is it's charging docket. Simply place on the magnetic charging docket and it starts charging.

S-health app in Samsung is user-friendly and very useful. In these 3 years I have just replaced watch belts once.

Charging lasts for 2 days and switching to flight mode will gives life upto 4 days usage. Batteries are good and still have juice.

Few photos for a reference.

Re: The Fitness Band/Smartwatch Thread

Was observing noise colorfit pro ad on internet & social media for quiet sometime. Thought of giving it a try. Was using Mi Band 2 for an year. The first impressions are nice. UI could have been a tad better. Quality of material looks decent. More feedback once I spend sometime with it.
