I heard it's 630 pounds for a factory unlocked phone in the UK. Does that make sense (does UK have factory unlocked phones)? Or is someone pointlessly getting my hopes up?

I have a friend in France but he is coming in July end, but its really hard for me to wait till that time.

Yes, and 4 other countries on 24 June. But UK and France have unlocked phones.

Dad wants one too. Likely around 2x41K + shipping to India for iPhone 4 from UK. Canada launch hasn't yet been announced. :S

Don't know about the 3GS. I would recommend finding on from ebay (australia or so, for unlocked version). Ebay AU was where I got mine last year. No idea how their prices compare to new iPhone 3GS. (both are factory unlocked)

Canada/France/UK/Germany all get locked iphones from Service providers & Apple stores.

France/Germany/UK offer Apple authorized unlock after a time period is completed on contract or you pay up front.

Canada doesn't offer any unlock options - you will need to hack/unlock or use a turbosim.

Several others are factory unlocked but they don't get it before August. My trip to Germany in Mid-July just might end up concluding with a long drive to Italy!

Does it need to be sim unlocked to be used in india and what is the micro sim that extreme torque has mentioned in his post, if it has micro sim slot, how to use it here? Any ideas?

micro sims are sim cards smaller than the one we traditionally used. These were introduced long with ipads. Indian carriers Airtel, Vodafone have not yet introduced them in india, but geeks have found workarounds for chopping the existing sim card to work in micro sim card slots.
