Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Thanks.
No I havent deleted anything from the device-hence I will check Option 1 to see if it automatically moves to UK maps.

From Cool_dube's suggestion I shall try Option B first as I would prefer not to remove the SD card etc unless it is absolutely necessary.

cheers

Option B - Instruct the unit to refer to internal maps only, while retaining the SD card. You need to check/uncheck the relevant options under - 'Settings' -> 'Maps' -> MapInfo

Hope that helps.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

I visited Costco on Sunday to make my final round of purchases. I was surprised to see that the Garmin 265 WT now costs only 99 USD, compared to 115 that I'd paid in December.

I thought of exchanging the unit or asking for a price rebate, but did not have the unit and bill with me at that time. On further thoughts, I found that it would cost around 105 USD with taxes, so for 10 bucks I'd lose all my GPS tracks and map updates. This apart I'd need to go to Costco again, which is not accesible by public transport, and I'd need my pal to be there too, as he is a member.

This is just an FYI to prospective buyers that the price now is really juicy. I also found a Motorola 5" unit for 165 USD, which looks like a great deal.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

i checked the garmin unit again last evening
both sets of maps are on it (MMI India and the UK, Europe, Ireland etc) - no problem.
so i guess once I go there, I can simply turn the machine on and allow it to orientate itself to the country im in.
will check it out and see.

either ways my N8 which has the latest downloads of all maps across the world, should be a good enough machine to orientate myself - at least while walking about or when using public transportation.

meanwhile MMI has launched their Version 6 in India - I got an emailer yesterday.
I think it might be worth upgrading my current MMI version but there is no mention of whether this is possible and the costs of such upgrade.

any news from anyone on the forum?

Just called Satguide to check if there is any update to Garmin maps. As per customer care, next version would be released by Monday.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

I am thinking of picking up a Garmin Nuvi 1300 (the basic one) because its readily available at a Best Buy near me. How is this unit ?
I was gunning for the 265W or atleast the 205W, but didnt find them in any brick and mortar shops (havent visited CostCo, as a member mentioned). Dont want to buy online.

Also, I am sure this question has been answered before, but do MMI/Satguide maps work on Tomtom units ?

EDIT : I dont think thats possible (yet), going by the posts here. Any luck with Megellan devices ? Seem pretty cheap.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

MMI sent a mailer that the new upgraded maps are available now
My version is from August 2010.

the new one Version 6 has last mile navigation with house numbers etc in major cities.
unfortunately this works only for MMI devices and not for the Garmin which I have.
However I am told by MMI that they are working on the interface for Garmin also and that in another 6 months they should have a version which works on Garmin and provides last mile navigation, house numbers etc.

I guess I shall wait until then to upgrade my current MMI SD Card.
the procedure seems simple - pay for the upgrade- receive an email link within 24 hours and then download the maps upgrade from that link to one's PC/ laptop. Then plug in the Garmin device to the laptop using an USB connecting cord and allow the MMI SD card to update itself. Apparently the process can take a couple of hours depending on the internet speed one is able to get.

this is just for the info of those who may be interested.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Did some Google search and figured out that most devices do support view of Re-installed tracklogs. So that means, if you want to share logs to some one else, he/she cannot move it to his/her device and follow the trail.

Seems like a simple thing, but too bad, Garmin does not support.

Has any one tried this?

Only entry level Garmins do not support GPX tracks. Many other software, esp offroad software support loading any gpx and following the trail. Slightly expensive garmin units also support the same.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

My brother recently bought MMI LX130.
I own a Garmin with Satnav maps in SD card.

Is it possible for me to use the SD card in Lx130 and use the same in Garmin ?

MMI guy says that it is not possible because Garmin does not support the Map provided along with LX130 and i need a purchase the map seperately for Garmin.

I think Garmin stores these tracks as CSV files. Will have to check if that is still the case, if it is then it might be possible to write a small utility to "import" GPX tracks.
