Very nice! Thank you!

And guess what... My dreams of a posh, inverter AC are all down the drain. Mrs G has persuaded me to buy a 2nd-hand Samsung from our repair man for 15K.

It's ok. It is hard for us to have the cash in hand right now, when it is summer and AC is badly needed, but we will be more flush in just a few months time.

And today I was looking at a 6Kva diesel generator... They are actually cheaper than I thought. Should be able to afford one by September, pre monsoon

And maybe the inverter ACs will have dropped in price in a year or two

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

To invert or not??

Have updated some more electricity consumption readings on the spreadsheet.

Used the guest bedroom yesterday where normal air conditioner is installed but the weather turned out to be very cool as there was dust storm last night followed by drizzle and then rain i early hour of morning. Will try and update more comparison readings.

The machines are Invetec Invertor and Normal (Chinese re-assembled) air conditioners bought last year

Continued readings data from last year is at

OF the present lot available today, the SBTU series from Bluestar is the one to buy. For remembrance just keep in mind State Bank Trade Union. It is an industrial design no doubt but the cooling is just too good and that makes up for lack of aesthetics.

Its for my bedroom and I prefer an inverter AC. We are not heavy sleepers and the slightest sound often wakes us up. At my in-laws place the TCL startles me easily with its starting sound.

This is the inverter model available at QRS: http://www.qrs.in/products/air-condi...d-8908084.aspx

It is a "CAFU" going by the model number. What is the difference between CAFU, PAFU, SBTU etc? Any reference book available?

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

I called up a retailer (showed up in google maps as Daikin dealer) looking for Daikin and got the answer as no stock, but can order but will take weeks. I can wait a bit now that it has started raining.

JTKM50 - 51K plus stabilizer and installation = 55K
FTKH50 - 37K plus stabilizer and installation = 40K (seems low)

But then, as soon as I was done with my Qs, he started pushing the Vestar brand, said it belongs to General etc.

When I showed little interest, he also asked me to consider Mitsubishi MSY/MUY GE-18, which according to him is a very good AC.

I plan to visit the shop in the evening.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

For those going for Mitsubishi ACs please keep in mind that, atleast from my research Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is preferred over Mitsubishi Electric and has kind of become the "General" nowadays. They also have a 5 star AC model with a variable speed compressor so it falls in between normal and inverter ACs

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

The AC Saga of the overheated TEG household continues.

Our used main-hall AC is happily cooling us again, although it took the guy two days to fix it. Even after re-installing, yesterday evening, there was a problem which he fixed this morning.

Making more phone calls to Sharp... There is a different company handling service in this city now. Yesterday, we were promised a visit from them today. I was unbelieving. But they arrived. They spent some time examining the system and actually had a service manual to check error codes. They confirmed that the main control board has died, and their efforts at poking and prodding it (hey! sometimes this is just what is needed!) had failed. But they said that, yes, spares are available, but would take ten days to arrive. Cost? As previously mooted, around 10K. Fine, but how much is that going to last us? "You'll get another two years out of it."

So we are giving it ten days to see what happens. That'll be 416.67Rs per month for my continued inverter comfort, assuming nothing else breaks. On the posite side of the account, though, it also means dividing the initial capital cost by 4 years, instead of just 2.

We still have a pedestal fan pointing into the bedroom... but at least it the AC is coming from that same room now. I did not enjoy going to bed in 31C!

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Narrowed to the following models:

Daikin JTKM50 - 5.2EER - 744/year - 52K+stab
Godrej GSC18GIA - 4.5EER - 850/year - 47K+stab

Godrej has an aluminium condenser and R290 refrigerant. I read somewhere that the Daikin does not have a condenser corrosion cover (whatever that is) so is not recommended for corrosive environments. I live 3km away from the sea and the place is hot and humid, which I guess qualifies as corrosive environment. Is anybody here successfully running a Daikin close to the sea?

ps: Rains are here and the blankets out, and that pours some cold water in my AC plans, but no one can predict the weather nowadays.

Maybe you should just resign yourself to the fact that you've landed a lemon and move on? We have a Sharp bought around 2 years ago that worked like a dream in Mumbai. Recently shifted it to a much bigger room here in Pune (15x12 approx) and was worried that the 1.1T rating would mean it wouldn't cool sufficiently, but to our delight it works fine. Helped that we got it installed by a competent, if slightly pricey, guy.

Yes, we should. And next time, this thing goes to the scrap yard. This time: one more chance, and the hope of getting another year or two out of it.

Spares are available... Yet to be seen. I'll believe it when they arrive.

I can sympathise with you. While we don't a lemon, my dad's old LG is close to kicking the bucket. The chennai summer is killing and the need to change has become immediate. With voltage fluctuating a lot, we are not sure if inverter Ac will hold up. Looking at Diakin, Whirlpool or Mitsubishi

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Guys,

I need to buy a split AC for living room. The room size is roughly 20x10 ft and has kitchen next to it (with no door).

There is window from ceiling to floor on one side measuring roughly 80 sq.ft. This window doesn't gets direct sunlight for most part of the day.

The AC will be running for average for 3-4 hrs everyday for 7-8 months in an year.

My house is on a middle floor in a multi-storey apartment complex.

Considering the above, I am thinking of going for the 1.8 3 star non-inverter from Daikin. It is going to cost me roughly 40K+installation+stabiliser cost. Do you think it will be good enough to cool the room in the hot and dry Gurgaon weather?

The other option I have is to go for 2.2 ton AC from Daikin which will be roughly 15-16k more expensive, since it is an inverter model. Does it makes sense to spend this much amount extra?

Request your suggestions - need to finalise this by tomorrow.

I would suggest going with the 2.2T. My kids have been sleeping in our living room this month as it has a 2T ac and they find it comfortable when comparing to the 1.5T in their 210Sq.ft bed room. The living room is Approx 18x16 with a Staircase to a mezzanine floor above. This summer has been very hot in Chennai.

IMHO and reading an invertor or five star air-conditioners pay for itself only if run for longer hours. Running for 3to4 hours only for few months you are better off using two star or three star machine. TCO important.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Guys,

Please suggest a reliable and competent AC repair agency / professional in Hyderabad. Location is Whitefields in Kondapur. I need to get an old model 1.5 Ton LG Window AC repaired which needs replacement of the plastic blower part. I lodged a repair request with LG but their authorised service partner has advised on inspection that since it is an old model, parts are not available. LG service partner had quoted Rs 3,500/- for replacing the plastic blower and the motor and I had no issues with the price quoted. I also tried Urbanclap but the guy they sent quoted a figure of Rs 4,000/- for replacement of Plastic blower, motor and fan blade as he said that it would not be possible to source the LG specific part and they will replace it with a generic assembly. I authorised the repair but when their technician visited us, he upped the repair estimate to Rs 5,500/-. I found it quite unprofessional and refused to get the AC repaired by them.

I have no issues in paying a premium for a quality repair job.

Thanks in advance
