In the market of Rs.1-2 k, people rather prefer buying those cheap glossy plastic phones playing blaring loud Altaf Raja songs.

For the small section of buyers like us not bothered about the features but concerned about the basic functionality and smart looks, there still exist a few sellers, but ya definitely not in india.

Out there in US there still exists a demand for these phones, which make the sellers refurbish the whole phone and even provide a warranty on it.

For us Ebay is the only option i guess

And Ya i too remember the Super Soft keypad of the 1112.
Tell me about it! Those glossy plastic chinese phones with blaring loudspeakers have often made life difficult for me...

I have checked out that model. Friend is using it as a 2nd phone... mainly to make calls when his iphone runs outta juice while travelling. So I got to check it out. The keypad is not comparable to what was on the 1112, 1110.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Guys

I am looking for a smart phone with good optics and my budget is 10-20K.
I am not a fan of gigantic 5+ inch phones, so 4-4.5 inch works fine for me. So please help me with some good options. I am open for Android as well as Win8

Main criteria are :
1. Camera - I dont roam around carrying DSLR all the time. so to capture some good memories, prefer a handy camera phone. 8MP and HD recording will be perfect, but MP does not matter. clarity does.

2. Battery backup - should last at least a day with normal wifi browsing, an hour of call, and some 3G during driving to sync mails and team-bhp app
3. Specs - I currently use an optimus one, and pretty happy with it except for the camera. So this is an indication for my usage. Atleast a dual core with 1GB RAM and user memory of at least 4GB since Google apps eat up everything in the 200MB that optimus has.
4. Price - 10K to 20K but obviously lower the better.
5. Bug free, reliable with strong build quality, since i dont change phones for 3 yrs

I am not sure the sub 15K phones have good cameras, I am so particular about brand value, as long as they meet my above requirements, i am ok with even Micromax and similar brands.

Preference : I liked Sony Xperia L which they claim to be a smart camera phone. (around 16K) Other choice is Nokia Lumia 720.

I find all samsung galaxy phones same with plastic build quality. But if it offers good value for money, i can live with it.

So please suggest.

I would suggest you go with the Lumia 720. I've seen the review camera samples and they look awesome for a sub 20k phone. It's not as good as my 920, but still for its price it does more than a decent job and has good optics. I don't think there's a team Bhp app for win8. At least I don't find one till now.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Hello all.

I would like to buy a new phone in a few days.

I currently have Reliance connection and want to keep it for my new phone.
I have an old looking phone. It is CDMA. Does my new phone also need to be CDMA then ?

I do not have a Budget problem so you can advise the Best phone for me but the only thing I am worried about is this CDMA part. I want a phone with good features and all. It should be reliable.

I had a Nokia and Samsung in the past and both did not last very long. I currently have LG and it is very reliable.

Have a look here for the best there is in CDMA phones - http://www.rimweb.in/forums/forum/91-reputed-sellers/

I am using a US import Galaxy Note 2 on CDMA on Reliance and at a cost which was 10K lesser than the GSM version. CDMA is much superior in voice clarity and data but sadly it did not take off in a big way in India like it has in the US.

@rajshenoy
As per point 3, if you need 1GB of RAM then you should stick to Xperia L as Lumia 720 comes only with 512 MB of RAM and hence pose incompatibility with several apps not considering the different OS they are running. Spec wise Xperia L wins and it retails for around 18.5 - 19K. Checkout the reviews of both these phones in www.gsmarena.com. This site has detailed reviews with info on every aspect of the phone.

I got a cyan Lumia 720 last week for my wife one week back for 17.5 K(just at the time when L was launched, we considered it, but due to lack of reviews didn't want to try it) and am very happy with it. Buid quality is top notch. A stunning screen, camera and simple intutive interface makes for a very good experience. In face this is the first smart phone for her and she doesn't have any difficulties in using it. One other feature worth mentioning is the 'HERE' map service by Nokia, it was absolutely spot on to the street level and had a chance to test it in AP on our trip immediately after purchasing it and its free.

Go out and check both these phones in person to get the feel, it will help you find the one that suits you better.

My Mom's Nokia N79 has become terribly slow! Also during incoming call, the name of the person on certain occasions is not displayed inspite of it being saved in the contacts. What could possibly be the reason? The phone is 4yrs old.

I found both these phones to have good build quality. a person sitting next to me has just bought Xperia L so i am currently exploring it right now. To be frank i am not liking this Camera. It seems to be pretty noisy. I would not have made a big issue of this, but Sony claims this to have best of camera features. Is this the best they are talking about ? From the reviews too, people seem to be highlighting the camera quality but they say with further patches, it might improve !! question mark !!

Coming to Nokia, I thought the RAM was 1GB. you are correct here. However i think the phone is not laggy. Is the Windows apps market placing restriction on the apps you can download ? 1GB RAM would mean some high end Gaming app i guess. As long as basic stuff like Temple run 2(or equivalent) runs fine i am OK.

Apart from Camera, I mainly need Email, browsing, video and music player, productivity apps such as xls, ppt, word for reading. i am on other side of the 30s, so I dont think i will have time to do hardcore gaming anyway.

Btw, Did you compare this with Lumia 620 ?

@rajshenoy

I will paraphrase the features explored by me till now

1. Camera: In one word, Excellent. It is just 6.15MP, but has Carlzeiss optics with F1.9 aperture, I believe its the widest aperture in a phone yet, so low light photography is good, not just in paper, but in real life too. The photos come out with good color and manage to capture a lot of details. I tried taking photos in night with lights on and a few in the room ones and found the photos clean without noise(Not DSLR clean, but good enough in a mobile phone) . One thing it lacks is image stabilization, but didn't find the need to till now. Dedicated camera button makes things very easy, you can start the camera at an point of time by clicking on the camera button, the application you are working on will be put on hold and you can take photos or videos. Videos too are easy to shoot (just by selecting the video icon after you start the camera) and the auto focus is great.

2. Screen: Its a Clear Black IPS LCD and is lovely. Its a low res one but you will not notice it, everything appears smooth. Colors are punchy and the screen is slightly curved(You will not notice it much) which gives a great feel. It compliments the phone very much.

3. UI: UI is very intuitive and smooth, so using it is very easy.

4. Audio: It s bit of a let down till now. Audio quality is good , but loud speaker volume is on the lower side and the audio player is a very simple one.
Options like Dolby enhancement / equalizer work only when you have a wired headphone connected. Didn't explore other options yet.

5. Connectivity: Till now i have tried only sending messages, but it has a host of options for email and stuff. But till now its good.

6. Games: I have downloaded almost all the top free games available and temple run is not one of them. Haven't tried the paid ones yet.
Windows app collection is small when compared to Android, so this might be an issue if you are heavy into games.

7. GPS/Maps: There are two free applications HERE and Drive which use common maps(We can download the maps for entire India again for free and have it loaded for offline navigation and saving data plans). We just loved these apps, just after we got the phone, we travelled to AP for a friend's marriage and was able to use it on that trip. It was excelled for charting routes or finding a place. Very simple and intuitive.

I haven't tried the office suit yet, but it comes preloaded with the phone, so on this front you shouldn't have any issues.

Compared to 620, we went for 720 based on the following reasons.

1. Better and bigger screen: IPS in 720 against TFT in 620, 4.3" vs. 3.8 " but with the same resolution, so 620 has better sharpness, but i didn't notice the diff.
2. Bigger battery: 2000 mAH vs. 1300 mAH.
3. Better optics: Carlzeiss f1.9 vs no name one.
4. Slimmer and sleek design.

But if you need a more powerful one esp., for gaming, you can stretch your budget a little and go for Xperia SP. It has Adreno 320 GPU which is used in the top of the line smart phones like HTC one and Xperia Z. It makes gaming or using any graphics intensive application smooth and will be future proof to an extent due to powerful hardware. since you are planning to have the phone for 3 years it will make sense in the long run.

I use Rearth Ringke Fusion (transparent back) case. It's quite good - lets me show off the back of the phone . I also have a dual layered combo case (case + holster) for more rough use. Apart from that, I also had bought (extra one which I am looking to sell off) the Rearth Ringke SF Matte Black 'soft feeling hard case'.

Someone suggested ebay. Apart from that you could try bhavtav.com. I had bought all my accessories on Amazon.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

I am deciding on a smartphone for Rs. 15000 (hard limit - can't be stretched even by a rupee). One choice is Lumia620 about which I have posted on the Windows Phone Thread. My 2nd choice is a HTC Android - what's the best HTC Android I can get for up to 15000.

My priorities are
1) Call Quality (should be as good as a Nokia)
2) Call Quality
3) Call Quality
4) Battery Life
5) Stability of the OS
6) Phone should be atleast as rugged as a Nokia.
7) Company's Exchange Email - should be smooth and easy - as good as it is in a Lumia
8) Banking apps like ICICI i-safe should run smooth.

I am not into gaming.
I don't care about the camera.
I don't care for most other apps.

So with only 3 unchangeable parameters (HTC, Android and 15000 hard limit) what HTC model do people recommend and why?

15k android is a no no esp from the so called biggies (although HTC is no longer a biggie).

For a couple of thousand more Xperia L might be better option than One V.

The guy at Croma told me that this is a discontinued model. Is it better than the different HTC Desire Variants?

Why is it a no-no? Also 15K is a hard limit as I said.

Has anyone here used Iball Andi 4.5h?
Specs look very good and it has some pretty nice reviews, but I haven't seen a single soul using it. This might be my wife's next phone, hence thought of asking for a hands-on review.
