Just seen a few laptops. Most important use of the laptop for me, to work on Maya and 3dsmax.

I considered 2GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz, 120GB HDD and the tricky part was the graphics.

Saw the Dell Inspiron 6400, but sadly it has 128MB Intel Graphic card and that too shared. So I looked around and found the XPS but it has a 12inch screen which is too small for me. There was a HP one too, it had a 256MB Nvidia card. There was some Siemens laptop too which featured a 512MB Nvidia Card. As you all mentioned, I want to go only for Dell. What do you say about the Inspiron 6400 and the HP series? One particular shopkeeper told me that there is a Dell laptop with 256MB Nvidia Card. Didn't get the time to check out on that though.

There is infact a 6400 available with a 256 MB Nvidia/ATi video card. You can configure yourself one here: www.dell.co.in

nvidia 7700 in a 14" laptop.

I am yet to check out but see if the 8000 series from nvidia or the 2000 series from AMD(ATI) are available on any laptop.

onle these are supposed to be able to run the next level of DirectX

AMD's have recently been positioning their cpu's (minus the fx series) as VFM. Many people still see it the same way. But intel has been tough on pricing lately and AMD has missed the first quarter and also reduced the forecasts for the second. Intel cpu's currently are better vfm (not necessarily cheaper but better vfm)

One thing to note is that the nvidia graphics card that comes with the dell laptops (7400) says its 256 MB. It is very misleading. It has only 64MB dedicated and the rest is shared from the main memory.

In other words dont expect performance of a 256MB graphics card.

Yes, I noticed that. So do you suggest me to go for that? Am really confused which one to go for. I did not find out the model number of the Nvidia card but he just told me its a 256MB one.

Fujitsu siemens... seen this too. Very attractively priced with a 512MB Nvidia Card. But I shooed the guy away since the brand sounded alien to me. I was sticking only to Dell. What do you say about this brand?

Furious sphinx. For normal use even a 7400, 8400 or x1400 x2400 will be overkill. for average gaming stick to the 6th level (7600,8600 or x1600,x2600)

FujitsuSiemens has some great laptops but most of them are OEM's which you can also get from other manufacturers. They are good though.

for nvidia its called turbocache and for ati, it is known as hyper memory.

add to that, 256mb of memory doesnt necessarily translate to performance.

more pipelines, better speed, better tools and much more are also very important.

I got a boost of around 20% between my stock ati catalyst and the last suitable catalyst on my xpress200m. Its got 128mb dedicated and 128 mb chipset memory. It still cannot hold candle to x1400 128mb or x1600 64mb.

Frankly speaking, I have no idea about all these specs. And this laptop is not going to be for gaming. It is exclusively for working with Graphic oriented programs like Maya and 3dsmax.

As of now, there are 4 laptops I had seen. All 15.4" (Optimum size). Hard Disk is not a criterea for me, so I am not mentioning it.

1. Dell Inspiron 6400 - Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz, 2GB RAM, 128MB Shared Intel VGA. - ~56k(INR)

2. Dell Inspiron 6400 - Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz, 2GB RAM, 256MB Nvidia GeForce.- ~66k

3. FujitsuSiemens (didn't check the model) - Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 512MB Nvidia GeForce. - ~56k

4. HP (didn't check the model) - Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 256MB Nvidia GeForce.

So basically here, Dell, HP and FujitsuSiemens have almost the same specs. The only difference arises when it comes to the VGA part. You know my requirement.

For the kind of applications that you have planned to run, I still feel a desktop will do more justice than a laptop. I have tried photoshop etc on a laptop BUT on a 19inch widescreen desktop, image editing is a different experience. The problem is that, even if you arent happy with your laptop you will be stuck with it, atleast in a desktop you can upgrade a card or change the display...
