Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I recently came across an app to report spam sms & calls to TRAI in their specified format. Its name as India Against Spam is available to download from play.

Tried, got acknowledge from 1909.
Any one using this app ?

Have been using this app since the last 3months or so.
Excellent app. I have reported more than 100 SMS+Calls.
Simply open the app and select the SMS / Call and click on Send.

You receive:
1 SMS from 1909 quoting that they have sent the complaint to the Operator.
1 SMS from Operator quoting that they have received your complaint and would act on it.
1 SMS from Operator with the complaint number and the expected date and time of resolution.

You would then receive a call from the Operator within 3-4 days and they would inform you that the number belonged to which operator and which zone (ex: Airtel UP, Airtel Karnataka, Vodafone Noida, etc etc).
They would also inform you that a complaint against the number with the operator has been raised and action would be taken. The complaint number is then closed.

Effect: Although there is a tremendous reduction in the number of those idiotic calls, but still I get one or two of them in a week.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

My stock Galaxy S3 popped a firmware update reminder in the morning. The phone downloaded and successfully installed an update of about 83 MB, but the phone's firmware version in 'About Device' is still 4.1.2.

What changed? And where can I check on the device what was updated?

Most of the spam I get is from the telecom companies themselves, or their agents. Will they really act against themselves?

Even my stock S3 had this update. I was all excited thinking atlast 4.2 is getting updated. But alas it is still 4.1.2. After checking through the apps there were two new apps:
1. Google Play Books.
2. Google Play Movies & TV.
What a waste of time. Instantly disabled both.

Yeah. Waste of time, unfortunately.

I checked out the 4.2.2 change-log, and there doesn't seem to be much useful in the update anyway. Based on all the rumors online, S3 & Note 2 will most probably go straight to 4.3 in a few weeks/months time.

I have a blacklist program installed. I've configured it to block all SMS that are not from contacts list. This prevents pesky SMSes to be received from supposedly 'clever' relemarketers who use an existing mobile no. instead of the usual TD-XXX,MH-XYZ header which is blocked by TRAI.

I read the firewall's log in the evening. Prevents me from unnecessarily wasting time during the day waking up the phone to check SMS.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Just learned from xda that people running PAC or PA rom on their Nexus 4 might encounter high data usage as it attempts to download the rom update through Google services, a concern particularly for people on limited 3g data plans as the update is ~280 MB in size.

It happened with me as well and I had ~800MB of update downloaded as it fails to install the update and the downloads it over and over again.

One may want to disable it by going to Data Usage -> Google Services -> Restrict Background data

I thought I was imagining things, but now that you say it, there are some pauses in spots where they didn't exist before

If you'd taken a full backup before applying the update, you can try restoring that.

Yes but done through Kies. A full back up to whatever extent possible through it was done. Will that restore it back? this is a new one, a few days old and i was getting the hang of things. No root yet.

Maybe i could stop a few apps and check out if things get back to normal.

And by restoring it, do the fresh call logs and messages also get wiped out?

I'm guessing the restore works like a systems restore (like in computers), not sure though. Verify online before doing it.

Mine's stock too (office doesn't support rooted devices due to security concerns).

I think it's better you disable any apps you don't want hogging resources through the Application Manager. Use 'Force Stop > Disable' under the 'All' tab for specific applications you want to disable, and see if things improve. Keep a restore as last option.

Android Device Manager is now live. You can locate, ring or remote wipe your Android device from web.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

^I tried to see if I can get this to work. It doesn't work for me.
What should I install on the mobile?
I don't see the setting to enable factory reset.
I just have an option to do factory reset under the Settings --> "Backup and Reset" option.

You need to go to Settings -> Security -> Device Administrators. There you will find a check box for Android Device Manager.
