blackberry has really become aggressive in pricing,i wonder what will be the faye of the competitor qwerty keyboard phones?

I read this ad too. Are the advertised prices MRP's. If yes, then we will have discounts on them as well from dealers.
IMHO, 8520 is already at the end of its lifecycle, and RIM needs to start selling them for sub 5k to 6k. Add to that, low cost data plans from the new cell network providers and the BB sales will surge

Re: Blackberry Phones and Services in India

Hi All

Have recently purchased the 9300 . I am on vodafone in mumbai with a unlimited bb plan and over the past few weeks am finding a lot of fluctuations in signals with the sos bar being displayed quite frequently at diff locations in the city. is there a issue with the net coverage because of the introduction of 3G. the internet surfing speed has also become less. earlier used to have a 8900 javelin and did not seem to have the same issues. is it a phone issue or network provider??

Re: Blackberry Phones and Services in India

Does anyone have any clue as to how the quality of network (for EDGE coverage) is for the lesser known service providers i.e Docomo and Aircel. This question specifically Mumbai. Wifey wants to move to Docomo/Aircel and I was wondering if its worth it.

It seems the phone is in dual mode, switch to 2G mode, Menu>options>Network and Connections. Change Network mode to 2G only

This step is for OS 6, I guess its little different for OS 5.

9780 has a 5mp cam while the others are 3mp. But it will be a few grand over your budget. 9700 should just about be in your budget, but the camera is nothing great.

It is available. But if your on gsm then there is no point in going for it. And frankly it offers nothing over the Bold 2 or 3.

None of the BB plans charge extra for in-country roaming especially on 2G.
Does this mean that if we browse on say Opera mini, Docomo will charge us extra?

Also, what about using apps like Google mobile apps, google maps etc? Are there extra data charges for these?

Can someone give details of the 399 Airtel prosumer plan?

For anyone who is looking for details on how to upgrade their OS to an official or leaked version, CrackBerry has an excellent instructional writeup along with photos and videos at this link BlackBerry 101: How to install an official (or leaked) BlackBerry operating system | CrackBerry.com

Airtel (or Vodafone,Docomo, etc) 399 plan is available only for prepaid consumers and costs Rs 399 per month (duh!). You have unlimited emails (upto 9 accounts) and unlimited browsing, chat, Opera Mini or any data consuming apps with NO additional data charges. You can use any number of apps as your phone supports.

I do not have an idea about roaming or if this plan includes tethering.

No Opera Mini usage is not charged extra as already said by Neilguy. You can use any app whatsoever on the phone unlimited for 399. Airtel prosumer 399 plan is what my wife is using. Everything is working. I haven't tried tethering as somebody said it involves some hacking. Anyway who wants to tether at 2G speeds when Photon+ and 3G are available.

As far as I know, no blackberry plan in the country charges anything extra on unlimited plans on roaming within India. Tethering or no tethering depends on the operator. 399 plan is available for postpaid customers also. Check this link.

In TATA Indicom, the same 399 plan allows tethering and that too at Photon+ speeds of 3.1mbps up to 10GB. That's the cheapest and best BlackBerry plan available in the country right now. But the only problem is CDMA. And the handsets are not available in the open market. Have to buy a TATA programmed phone from tata teleservices directly. And they are way more expensive than the GSM counterparts.

Re: Blackberry Phones and Services in India

^ welcome to the world of BB

and people who are asking questions about data charges while tethering to your laptop well Idea charges Rs.20/MB or so and they do not have any plans per se for tethering :(

and the whole BB aggressive pricing is because they are targeting a much younger customer profile.
