Re: Which Automatic Hatch?

An update in my car search. Bought an Elite i20 Asta(O) petrol. I liked the premium interiors, ABS, 6 airbags, reverse camera and sensors, adjustable head rests, rear defogger, cornering lamps and not to mention the good build quality. At the end of the day, I felt I could not compromise safety for the convenience of an automatic.

OTR was 9,00,000 (Bangalore).

Thanks for everyone's input.

Which car?

We're planning to replace our aging 2011 Polo 1.2 TDI with a new hatchback. The requirements are a good automatic transmission mated to a petrol engine and budget restricted to no more than ₹8,00,000/- (on road Ahmedabad). The car will mostly be driven in the city, however, mild highway driving is also planned.

We have shortlisted the following cars:
1. Tata Tiago XZA
2. Maruti Suzuki Ignis Delta AMT
3. Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta CVT

We are also waiting for the launch of the new swift.

The cars rejected by us:
1. Honda Brio
Reason: Too puny for my dad's liking to make any highway trips whenever made.
2. Ford Figo
Reason: Exceeds the budget.
3. Hyundai Grand i10
Reason: The 4 speed automatic gearbox lags behind the competition. Moreover the fuel economy is poor and lacks ABS.

Are there any options that we've missed out on? Also, which one should we choose?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Re: Which car?

This is just me opinion, you can eliminate the Ignis outright.. it is neither here nor there in terms of anything and anything it does the Tiago might do better.

After TD I'd say go for Tiago if you want a car which is more compact yet just about as spacious as your old car, the Polo, refinement wont be an issue as both these cars run on 3 cyl setup and you may not realize the difference. Go for Baleno if the requirement is space and comfort, no contest there among the choices given. The few differences between the 2 are that Tiago may ride over bad roads a little better and is better built but the Baleno leads the way as an all-rounder.

My suggested order of preference, along with the most noticeable con of each -

1. Baleno CVT - Low seating position, not elderly friendly.
2. Ignis Delta AMT - More of a 4-seater than 5, but comparably the most Fun to drive from the given list.
3. Tiago XZA - 3-Cylinder petrol with AMT, not the best combo IMHO.

I liked the tiago as well. Haven't test driven yet but looks promising. However, my dad is a bit skeptical about going for it owing to Tata's questionable products in the past and not so proven after sales service.

Your order of choice must be:
1.Baleno
2.Ignis
3.Tiago

As dark.knight said, the Baleno is the all rounder here and its has nothing against it. Between the Ignis and Tiago, the Ignis AMT feels nicer to drive, that is, when driving in stop-go traffic in D mode the Ignis feels more responsive because of the superior engine, no engine noise inside the cabin, no vibration in pedals and gear knob. But Tiago XZA has better list of essential features compared to the Ignis delta. Between Baleno and Ignis, the AMT equipped Ignis will deliver slightly better fuel mileage, better power delivery during overtakes and picks up speed faster. But the Baleno CVT drives smooth, relaxed and composed without any occasional jerks at slow speeds that the AMT will have. Test drive all the three cars before you eliminate any.

The potential new car is mostly going to accomodate not more than 4 people at a time. So that's not a deal-breaker. I TD'd Baleno and Ignis today and Ignis was indeed a very fun to drive car. I'm yet to TD the Tiago and I need to see how it performs.

Thanks for your suggestions

Re: Which Automatic Hatch?

I have two cars in mind;

1)Wagon R VXi+
2)Grand I10

which would be a better option for elderly folks in terms of visibility and comfortable seating?

You may reject the Gi10 for it's lack of safety features (missing ABS), but it's TC AT gearbox is the best of the lot that you have considered - other options comprising of CVT / AMT boxes.

I believe that would be the Wagon R.

I would suggest the Wagon R only if the car would be chauffeur driven, else Ignis Delta AMT/MT is much more easier to drive(due to better low-end torque), has better seats, ride quality and is more fuel efficient.

I bought the Jazz CVT recently and I have not regretted my decision even for a second. Yes, the pickup is slow but that's the price you have to pay to drive in mind boggling Bangalore traffic. Anyone who is looking to buy a nice , comfortable and spacious AT car , Jazz CVT cuts the ice in all possible directions. Its a decent highway cruiser too. Not an outright muscle car but a car which you can drive without any fuss all day long at 80-100km/hr without an ego offcourse as sometimes Autos will overtake you on speedbreakers.

There's a rumour that the Elite i20 is debuting in a 1.2L CVT avatar during the Auto Expo 2018. It would come with a lesser tax rate @ 12.5% down from the 24% the 1.4 attracts: Source: ACI

Re: Which Automatic Hatch?

please do consider Ignis. 4 cylinder engine is far better than 3 cylinder in wagon r. decent pickup and mileage.
comfort levels are much superior than wagon r. visibilty is also good.

Re: Which Automatic Hatch?

Hi bhp-ians,

Struggling to make up my mind between the following 2 options -
A brand new Ford Figo 1.5P Titanium AT or 2-yeard old Volkswagen Polo TSI.

Are there any common issues with the Polo TSI?

Looking forward to some advice.

If you are not smitten by the TSI+DSG combo, and the price is not mouth watering - better go in for a new car.

Here's a few of the threads on GT TSI issues:
