Nevertheless, I'm eager to test drive the new Nano and consider whether to upgrade my 2011 Nano to the Easy Shift model.
The disk brakes would have been perfect.

But, on the fifth gear, the 4th gear itself so unusable in the Nano. It is just for cruising with no acceleration whatsoever.

Re: PICS: Tata begins testing Nano Twist Active AMT

The AMT version is said to have a FE of 21.9 kmpl. This is about 12% lower than the MT version. Is this difference a litttle too much ?

But that fourth is on the MT version. The AMT version would have a different gear ratio ?

I doubt that would make much difference. The real issue with the nano is that it has a very small engine. The engine should have been upgraded. A missed opportunity for Tata Motors.

The problem with 4th gear is that it's too highly geared (km/h/1000 rpm). So unless you're doing at least 40 km/h, 4th gear can't be used. What's really needed, in my opinion, is 5 gears with the first 4 being slightly lower than the existing 4 and a new 5th that slightly higher than the existing 4th.
The lower gears would help the Nano climb up slopes with less effort and the taller top gear would help it cruise better.

The AMT kit is an add-on to the existing gearbox. There would not be any changes in gearing.

The AMT is said to have 5 gears. If true, then this problem will be taken care of, at least to some extent.

Update / Correction:
The 5 gears are 4+1.
Got this confirmed today.

I wonder if any of the reputed tuners in India have worked their magic on the Nano engine, to liberate a few more horsepower ?

Maybe even remove the speed limiter ?

I think the 2 cylinder engine has been around long enough for someone to have tried and figured out what works.

Cheers,

The speed limit is not to protect the engine, but rather to protect the wheel bearings which have a certain upper limit of speed.

It might not be that much fun to have the speed limit removed, I suspect

Not sure that this is fact or myth.

If that is indeed the case, I wonder how many Nano owners have had issues with wheel bearing failures ?

Logically, no Nano owners will report wheel bearing failures since the speed limit in the car prevents over-speeding. Right?

Well, not really.

If the bearings were as failure-prone above 105 kmph as you say they are, then those driving their Nanos on highways at around 90-100 kmph regularly (well within the cruising speed of the Nano, given it's tall gearing), would see reduced wheel bearing life with high mileage usage ... correct ?

Is that indeed the case ?

If the speed limiter were to be increased to say 115 kmph, to enable a 100-105kmph cruise on a highway, do you believe that would drastically reduce the life of the bearings ?

Cheers,

FourWheelDrift

Re: PICS: Tata begins testing Nano Twist Active AMT

If I understand correctly. The launch is scheduled for today only. However, wasn't able to find the timing of the launch. Many people have asked about the timing on nano facebook page.

Sharing some more details .
This as per me is a very good option for many routine chores in day to day life.
Please remember the increasing costs of rickshaws and taxis.
The ladies in the house might just love the practicality.

The improvements highlighted also are significant.
Its good to see Tata making some improvement on the safety front .
However as is the case with most of the launches in india no sta rratings of the crash tests being published.
Still would like to believe the Gen x Nano being a little more safer:

Thanks for sharing. The ladies may also like the new "Persian Rose" shade that they have indicated here. The purple was already very popular.
