re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Mahindra can also make a royal mess of their engines and do R&D at the expense of it's customers. Case in point is Mahindra Jeeto, a microvan/pickup that gets engine seizure exactly after every 45000 kms thus leaving many of their customers in this segment viz autorickshaw drivers and small pickup ooerators penniless for ownership. It's main bearing seizes every 45k like clockwork and is a classic example of mahindra R&D at expense of customers. In case of xylo D2 CRDE and coolant pipe burst can lead to engine seizure because there is not engine temp heating checklight on dash. A mere burst or leak from a coolant rubber hose can wreck your engine. Is this bean counters pinching pennies over sensors or squarely blamed on inadequate engineering redundancies. Mahindra charges a fat premium for all their vehicles. This premiums are not being pumped back into products from same segment. They are using this premium to create elite segment premium products.

Any hopes of Thar with diesel/petrol automatic at launch? Most of leaks and test muels seems to be having manual gearbox.

All reports thus far suggest that an AT version would be made available at a later stage and not during the initial Launch of the 2020 Thar. I wonder if the AT would be made available with a diesel engine, as most reports suggest the AT would be paired only with a petrol.

I hope Mahindra surprise us with an AT at original launch!

One good thing is, even on the lower 4x4 trim (without head unit and with soft top) - the car has powered front windows. So much better than the rudimentary rolling handles. (Based on pictures I saw elsewhere. Not directly linked with the pictures above.)

New THAR looks promising. A perfect lifestyle vehicle.
With spy pics, its clear that its no more a rudimentary functional old jeep used for hilly terrains to ferry people or for the hardcore enthusiasts, but has lot of bells and whistles to attract a much wider audience.

Hope Mahindra do not deliver a half baked attempt and give us a "seltos" magic.

Few aspects have been confirmed from spy pics posted earlier to attract audience from all spectrum:
Better looking interiors (touch screen, MID).
Better safety (4 discs, 2 airbags).
Better exterior looks (optional hard-top, wider, squat-ish, 18 inch alloys, 255 mm rubber).

Dreaming the following also:
Better comfort by giving a Hexa like suspension set-up.
Petrol + auto (TC) combo.
Optional powerful engine for city brisk overtaking and highway cruising (like Seltos 1.4 Turbo petrol).
And multiple variants with more premium features like large sunroof, TPMS, reverse camera, nice audio speakers, 6 airbags etc

Give higher number of variants to cover customers with a wider price and choice range. From the very basic enthusiast functional 4x4 to a premium lifestyle vehicle.

I am really hoping for a petrol mill with a manual option in the new That. Nothing can beat the joy of a properly tuned petrol 4wd, without the additional maintenance of diesels and hassles in cold weather. The phasing out of the Gypsy has left a void.

Very nice to see a plastic covered A pillar finally in the Thar now. Also - seems the push buttons below the AC/climate control are heavily inspired in design by the fabulous retro ones on the Suzuki Jimny current gen. Loving those.

True, petrol 4x4s are such a blast to drive. I don't know why people love diesels when the transfer case on a 4x4 makes up for the torque difference between the engines.
And to top it off petrol 4x4s are lighter, smoother and sound better.

They are, indeed; and hassle free even in cold weather. A well designed 6 speed gear box with shorter ratios (like the low 1st of the Duster AWS) should get near enough low end torque for practical purposes even in 2H. The only issue would be fuel economy, but then the Thar is positioned as a lifestyle vehicle anyway.

A modern diesel engine has absolutely no trouble in sub zero temperatures. Even my prehistoric Pajero 2.8 SFX had no issues starting in minus 20 during my Raid De Himalaya sojourns.

I have always found the low end torque of a big diesel very very comfortable and capable in offroading conditions. You don't really have to struggle or push the engine to deliver the torque. I would prefer a manual 4x4 Diesel anyday over a petrol in those situations.

New Gen Thar caught going for Winter Testing towards Manali yesterday on my drive up from Ludhiana to Manali near Raison toll. Forgive the blurry video.

I saw it many times too when I was in Manali for New Year. Had to explain to my mom and aunt why this one was covered in camouflage.

Noticed a Thar near Chengalpat, TN. First time seeing it with a short nice looking DRL's. Unfortunately, couldn't take a pic.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I spotted the camouflaged new Mahindra Thar somewhere between Annur and Metupalayam over the weekend. Since I visit this thread occasionally, it was easy to identify the new Thar from a distance. In the real world, it looked very wide and had an impressive presence about it. Side by side with the old Thar, the visual differences between the two generations will be extremely pronounced.
