What is with Mahindra and the branding though. Just noticed the the sheer number of Thar branding on well, the Thar. Was a similar story with Scorpio as well. Why do they go so massively overboard?

1. Front fender x 1
2. Tailights x 2
3. Front Bumper Ledge x 1
4. Front seats x 2
5. Front door pads x 2
6. Outside Rear view mirror casing x 2

A total of 10, unless i have missed some, of which 6 are just on the outside! Perhaps this is the only part of the design where the designers got a free hand, the rest could not be changed

Absolutely loved the car. Its become better in every conceivable way. Finally a Thar that you can use as a daily driver as it finally gets all creature comforts that are expected of a modern car these days. And thankfully, staying staying true its DNA and heritage, its off-road manners have improved in this iteration (higher ground clearance, improved departure and ramp-over angles).

One glaring miss I noticed was the external key hole to open the fuel cap. An option to open it internally should have been provided. Otherwise, loved the stance which is much wider now, and greatly enhanced by those 18'' wheels. An absolute head turner!

At least in the US, this is done to discourage third party manufacturer parts. While anyone can legally produce compatible reverse engineered parts, the branding needs a licence, which the manufacturers can control. Of course you can make parts without the branding, but they'll scream fake.

In the video, the traction control automatically goes off when using 4wd Low range. Isn't the "brake locking differential" a part of the traction control system like the system in the Wrangler or the new Fortuner/Endeavour? Or is it an independent setup like a torque vectoring system?

If the TCS shuts off fully in low range along with the brake locking differential, the front axle will be fully unlocked.

Is this Mahindra's way of payback by clawing away Compass and Wrangler sales in India?
How will Thar affect Wranglers sales?
Wrangler will probably be 4-5 times more expensive than the Thar.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

4wd driving is slowing picking up in India. Although not extreme, people prefer overlanding or mild off roading. And to satisfy this hobby, we do not have much choice in India, except for some excellent 4wd vehicles which are very expensive.
The new Mahindra Thar ticks almost all boxes.
The earlier Thar had excellent off road capability but was very crude and lacked highway comfort.
The new Thar will probably fill that gap.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I am thoroughly impressed with the bean counters at Mahindra. They are actually offering a second generation vehicle to a niche segment!

But the missing coordination with the design team inspite of all the free hand given by the Company is still evident!
The most complete product they designed was the XUV500, and later the fiasco with the TUV300 continues:

Conversation between TUV300 designers:

Bonnet: I raised height by about 3 inches, all macho.
Chief Designer: Ok we will make side windows a 'rhombus' so they don't look small!
Tailgate: What do I do with the rear windscreen now, the rising beltline is making it even worse?
Chief Designer: Leave it at 30% of the tailgate area, who cares!

Same is the case with Thar:

Internal body: Ohh, I forgot to route a cable for fuel lid opener!
Fuel lid: No worries, I will put a key hole.

Chief: The fuel tank must be above 50 litres.
Fuel tank: No worries, I will slap on an ABS plastic fuel tank that protrudes out of the chassis.

But the owner will worry a lot because it will be the first to be hit on underbelly scrapes.

All was well and I was being rather optimistic until I saw at the end of Gagan Choudhary's video:

Collate all this data. Interest defines price.

Just thinking out loud here, just trying to find some logic in this.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Noob question - I was reading the new Thar's review on Autocar India when this seeming oxymoron caught my eye. Please let me know if this isn't an oxymoron:

Quote:
The turning circle is not as tight as the previous Thar’s and wheel articulation not as generous. However, mechanical rear diff locks and huge suspension travel promise to make the new Thar every bit as capable.

Aren't wheel articulation and suspension travel the same thing? How can they be Jekyll and Hyde?

Wheel articulation and suspension travel are two different things. The former is majorly a component of the axle. A long travel suspension isn't enough to give you good articulation, else even compact SUVs would have bragged about it The axle needs to be capable enough to aid articulation so that the wheels stay in contact with the ground while off roading through tricky situations and deep ruts.

Suspension travel is purely limited to being a component of the suspension. As the name suggests, a longer suspension travel allows absorption of bigger bumps and potholes without the shocks maxing out.

In very simple terms:

Articulation is the tilt/skew of the wheels. The feel that you get as if the wheels will break off if they get tilted sideways any further.

Suspension travel is up/down as we all know

Care to elaborate please? The rear axle on the Thar is a solid axle.
