re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Wonderful job done by M&M in bringing this new THAR. Previous THAR was not a family friendly car, but today while I was watching videos of the new THAR, my wife asked if we are going to buy it. If M&M gets the pricing right, I think this will be another winner from M&M

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Rip off, copy pasted or what ever people find this to be, I see some sincere effort from Mahindra the team behind the new Thar truly deserves a big round of applause! Well Done team!!!

This is more than a launch IMHO! This is a very, very bold step taken by an Indian manufacturer! The Thar was already a lifestyle product and numbers did not really justify a complete redo from grounds up. However, Mahindra still did it! and boy! have they upped the ante!! Going by all pics and videos, they have really, really done a fabulous job! And a honest one at that!

While the Suzukis and Toyotas think we Indians do not deserve such small thrills in life, here we have a home grown player showing the outside world what it takes to win our hearts!! Commendable efforts!!

Just couldn't help grinning when 'SUVs' like Jeep Compass and Ecosport pass-by like small hatchbacks.

The autocar review mentions the petrol engine to refined and powerful with very good throttle response.
Complains about brakes being grabby and lacking bite.
The soft top removal is a manual effort, but seems to be well engineered, as shown in the review.
The access to second row of seats is best suited for short and slim folks.
Will remain a life style vehicle but a much improved and better looking one.
If priced sensibly this can be a good true blue SUV rather than the current 4m ones.
Will be interesting when this will compete with Jimny in buyer's mind

These are photos of the 2010 Jeep wrangler.

I just do not want to go into the reason behind Mahindra chosing 15th of August and 2nd October as the dates of launch and bookings. Even the thought of it is sickening.

What a Royal rip-off!!

Ha! That is one thing that immediately caught my eye too. This thing will have a monstrous road presence.

The only thing I could personally ask for as an improvement (without driving it) is a bit more boot space. If only the rear seats could be slid forwards and backwards (don't know if it can be modified) then for a family with average height members it could function as an only vehicle.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I have a query.

All of us have noticed that this is evidently a copy and paste job. The plagiarism is to such an extent that an untrained eye may not be able to tell any difference between the two.

This is a trend widespread in the Chinese automotive industry. The courts there aid the companies with bypassing design IP laws.

Are the laws in India such lax as well? Otherwise what is stopping FCA from suing Mahindra for all their worth?

From the Zigwheels video, diesel variant doesn't seem to have under bonnet insulation. Would have been an easy way to improve NVH even more, wonder why they skipped it. Also, a horizontally sliding rear window would have probably made the rear seats less claustrophobic.

But that's just nit picking. Overall, first impression seems to be one of a brilliant Thar v2.0 by M&M.

By sickening - May be you are referring to the birth date of the father of the nation? Sad to hear this POV.

BUT - You are wrong. October 2nd is also the day when Mahindra & Mahindra was originally established - back in 1945, to assemble the Willlys Jeep.

October 2nd 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Mahindra and their jeep (before the brand existed and became a trademark) tradition.

The right way to launch a car. No half measures!

Full arsenal of Diesel MT & AT + Petrol MT & AT.
No lame engines, both are powerful. Tata must take notes.
Good job M&M !

Also reminding people here that the Sonet was unveiled recently. Nice way to steal Sonet's thunder.

Well but it is a very good rip off. It will be a poor mans Wrangler.
I have seen Vitara Brezza with Jeep grills, this will be a much proper rip off

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Much has been already said about the Thar's grille but I am more concerned about the grille's functioning than it's aesthetics. With that gaping mouth and the radiator lurking behind, won't it be really easy to puncture the radiator if suppose a truck's tyre kicks up a rock?

Other than that, the Thar is w-a-y better in every possible aspect compared to the last gen and Mahindra surely knows how to launch a car! I couldn't think of a more befitting day to unveil a car like the Thar and that too with all drive-train combinations. Our other home grown company could surely take a leaf out of Mahindra's book on how to launch a car. Really looking forward to the pricing and what impact does it have on the C-SUV market when launched.

Although it resembles the Wrangler, it still looks good. Unlike so many other cars that come out of Mahindra's stables like the KUV, for instance. What do they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?

Dhabar Behram, the man behind the first gen. Thar would be happily smiling from above.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

No doubts this looks very very good. There's lot of desirability factor now over the previous Thar.

However, am surprised that people are happy to pay 15L for this - this is the price bracket where we have (variants of) products like XUV300, Seltos, XUV500, Creta and such other very refined products. Thar may be a no-nonsense product for off-roading but how about an interstate run? How comfortable is the journey for a family in this for anything more than 5 hours, compared to other products in the bracket? Aditya's first look review gives ample details on it - For me, this is a back-up/beater car I can use for runs within 50 kms for off-road fun or random get aways.

The ride quality, noise levels, refinement etc are super important for me - and I dont think this car gives me that. So, while am smitten about the design, I might choose to buy this in a pre-owned route to compliment my regular car, probably at Rs. 6-7L few years down the line.

And yeah, my pick will be a Red followed by Aquamarine
