My polo 1.5 TDI is giving a constant mileage between 16-18 kmpl in my daily drive which includes 70% rural roads( uneven roads),10% 2 lane NH, 20% SH. My average daily drive is around 90 km. During long drives especially in the early mornings, I'll get an average mileage of 22kmpl!

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

With winters setting in & low a/c use, both of my car's mileage has improved by at least 2kmpl.

Expected to see further improvement as the chill sets in completely.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Is there anyone who has got the mileage exceeding ARAI mileage? If all of us can only manage 5 to 10 km lesser than the ARAI mileage, what practical use is this figure? Shouldn't there be any full tank to full tank figure driven separately under actual city and highways, which would help the users better?
The ARAI figure of 21.37 or 19.8 in actual road conditions probably doesn't matter much.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Completed Cochin->Kollur->Jog falls->Cochin recently on our 6 year old Maruti Ritz petrol.
Total distance covered : 1554 kms
Average FE : 15.8
Highest FE : 17.2 ( First tank)
AC Usage : 100%
Tyre pressure : 32 Psi all round
Car was loaded with 4 adults and their luggage for 5 days.
This was our first ever road trip and very impressed with the FE since the car was loaded and am running 205 section rubber. Had considerable amount of local as well as ghat running involved.

Well, I have come across many bhp ians getting more than the figures claimed by the ARAI.
Even in my case, the efficiency of my vento 1.6 tdi for the 360 km ride from Coimbatore to Neyveli was 25.8 kmpl as per MID. If we assume an error of 2 ,the final value might be 23.8 or approximately 23.5 kmpl.
Many a times I happen to get around 23 MID figure which amounts to 21.7 to 21.8 kmpl by tankful method which is certainly above the ARAI value.
But seriously I don't understand the logic behind that. How can I surpass the the figure got by constant 55 kmph without AC,with just a driver and less fuel(which I believe is the way the ARAI tests the cars for FE) ?

ARAI figures are a joke in my opinion. They can't even be used to measure relative efficiency between two vehicles either.
Our current ride is a Vento 1.6 TDI. Prior to that we had a 2009 diesel i20 5 speed.
Case 1: i20
ARAI figure: 21.xx
City: 12
Highway: 16(Normal driving)
15( on driving fast)
17( the best)
Case 2: Vento
ARAI figure: 20.xx
City: 13-14(regularly)
Highway: 19( normal driving)
17-18( on driving fast).
20( best yet)
The only reason I can attribute this difference is: 1.Torque delivery at lower rpms( 1500 rpm for vento vs 2000rpm for i20)
2. Better gear ratios in the vento ( tall gear ratios in the i20)
3. Better drivability due to the above reasons
Conclusion: Never ever consider those figures. Car makers can literally tune their cars to 'top' an 'exam'.
Note: I don't know what will happen after I receive the ECU updates for the vento. Won't mind as long as the figures are higher than the i20

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My Diesel Tata Zest XT gives me 23kmpl on highways and 15-18kmpl in the city. When the mileage drops a bit, I clean the air filter and voila, the figures are back again.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Car: Honda Brio SMT(O) - May 2012
Current Odo reading: 24,000 kms

On a few recent highway drives with the a/c switched on 95% of the time with 4 adults on-board and with average speeds of 80~85 kmph (via Torque OBD reader), the car returned a FE of 16.27 kmpl. The speed hovered around 90~120 kmph on the speedometer.

I use an app to keep track of the FE and on the last fill, the car covered 23686 kms and sipped 1607.68 litres of petrol which is an overall average of 14.73 kmpl (the app data indicates 14.99 kmpl).

i10 Automatic
City Driving - around 11-12 (around 30% time on AC)
Highway Driving - around 15-16 ( around 30% time on AC)

In certain other countries the mileage figure is given as city & highway mileages separately, and these are not just test conditions.
Such real world mileage figure would be more useful, than such figures simply mentioning some figure under test conditions, which does not make any sense to the user who normally struggles under heavy traffic.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Vehicle: Honda City Vtec (2015)
Odo: 14100 kms
City-Highway: 85-15 (lots of short trips in city)
AC: 100%
Method: Tankful

FE in City: 9.5 kmpl - 10.4 kmpl (worst - best)
FE on Highway with 2 + driver + full boot : 12 kmpl - 16.8 kmpl (worst-best)

Notes:
1. Using the Cruise Mode on the highway, set at 100 kmph, does magic for the FE.
2. My driving style is not suited for eco mode. I rev reasonably high, and use engine braking liberally.
3. I switch off the car at traffic lights longer than 40 seconds
4. I drive sedately in the city (don't cross 4000 rpm)
5. I have fitted 195s on my car, as opposed to the OE 175mm tyres

Yes, I agree with you. Things will make more sense when these test conditions are more related to the real world. But until then you have to rely on a person having a car you're looking for and having similar driving habits and driving conditions (easier said than done).
