First home town visit

Hi Guys,

First trip to home town and first long trip in swift VDI. So much have been said about this car before and I dont have nothing much to add but to just say, this CAR ROCKS

Forward Journey

543KM upward journey covered in 10 and ½ hrs including 1 hr break all together. Felt car very solid & stable on cornering with Michelin 185/70. Cruising at 100-120kmph most of the time and very aggressive overtaking. FE recorded 18.12kpl with 3 adults, full boot & 80% AC.
Route:blore-mettur-coimbatore-thrichur-moovattupuzha-kottayam

Backward Journey

563KM Journey took 12 hours including 1 hr break. Myself & driver driven the car. Again 100-110kmph very very aggressive overtaking and this time FE is 17.82kpl, with 4 adults full boot & 100% AC. After this trip, the company fitted music system(rattle!) on back seat resume playing. It was muted at first service, but active again.

Lessons Learned

Do not trust the hand signal of private bus drivers in Kerala, I had a miracle escape from hitting on the side of a bus when the driver showed some signal which I & wifee interpreted as letting me to overtake, but he took a right turn when I was overtaking . Thank god+tyres+ABS, I could able to go parallel to his route few meters and then stop.

On a rainy night, be very careful on these water clogged highways(salem-blore), especially the median intersection in most of the places. You may feel the road quite nice while drizzling, but as soon as you near to right side, its like a Hara-kiri(Wonderla), no grip, no vision very near to danger.

Finally really confused about tyre pressuge gagues in various bunks. Story starts from Dealer: With the first service, dealer filled nitrogen, 33F-33R. After a week checked at IOC bunk near HSR and corrected to 34F-32R. With this pressure I had this long trip to Kerala. Once I reached there checked again and reported it to be 2 pt lesser in each tyre and bring it back to 34F-32R. Now the real story begins. After this trip I had been to Mysore once. Started at 7.30 PM, car was at office covered parking place before journey(read tyre was not hot). After 26KM checked air, to my surprice it was 37F-35R, corrected to 34F-32R. Again checked after 2 KM it again 2point higher 36F-34R, corrected to 34F-32R. I gave a final try after 5 km, oh god its agian 35F-33R, corrected to 34F-32R. The very next day, early morning checked again and the meter gauge started with 18 !!!, ohh was this the pressure all thru mysore trip or mixing nitrogen with air makes any issue, I go mad with this weaired reading. After this had been to salem once and maintained 80-110kph most of the time and very disciplined gear shift between 1.5K-1.9KRPM. With this very sedate driving FE showed 21.48 PL (100%AC, 85% mysore and salem highway, 15% city. Only twice touched 120 and once kissed 140). Tankful-Tankful topup and made sure no air gap.

PS: I am not FE freak rather like to rip, but its a pleasure to realize that im driving such a good FE car.

Few Questions:
1. Can the tyre be so hot after 26km of driving and is this the reason for this inconsistent reading?
2. Any one has used hand held air pressure gauge? how much it cost and where will get it?
3. 29 days old car reads 4100KM on odo and nearing 2nd service. What all things need to be done at this service?

The tyre pressure gauges can be different at different places, but mind one thing - never compare pressures when the tyres are hot with while they are cold. The cold tyre pressure is what you need to maintain, and when you have run your car for sometime, especially on the highway, the tyres are quite hot and air expanded, so you'll definitely get higher tyre pressures!

Ideally fill air within 1-2 km of driving in the morning or evening, if possible do less speeds also. If you have run more in hot it might be a good ideas to fill 1-2 psi more.

Don't bother checking every other time unless you feel it's really low. Once in 2 weeks is fine and on long trips once every 500-700 kms. Good way to find if air pressure is optimum is to watch the thread wear. It should wear out flat, if sides are wearing out more increase psi.

Italian tune up as I mentioned early is driving hard at high rpms low gear once engine warms up, to clear the engines throat. Google it

Guys, I need help from you. One of my friend filled 500 bucks for diesel for his VDi. After filling, he left the petrol bunk. Soon after that, he sensed that there is something wrong. Too much clatter and too much grunting. The drive is not smooth at all. He had his doubts. Did the petrol bunk guy fill diesel or petrol. He continued to drive with very rough engine often vibrating dangerously. He has got his car to office. I tried smelling the fuel but couldn't really make out whether it was petrol or diesel for sure. We opend the returning valve and started so that we could check the fuel that is present in the car. We tried to start the car. It cranked after 4-5 sec. I could see that the low idle is fluctuating. When I open the throttle, I see that there is a lot of white smoke (like the kerosine auto rickshaws).

My questions:
1. Can the diesel car be driven if its filled with Petrol. If so, what could be the damages.
2. Why isnt there anything in the car that can detect this and shut off the engine automatically as it could cause harm to the car ( and also may be to the driver)

We have contacted Maruti and they are coming in here shortly.

Your thoughts on this please.

Attend to the car immediately, more details here. Please donot start or crank until you clarify. It might be a case of bad diesel also.

More details here http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/street...iesel-car.html

Thanks Jaggu. The guys finally drained out all the bad fuel. We filled fresh diesel and the car is all happy again. Hopefully theres no permanent damage or excessive wear. We inspected the fuel and tried to compare it with the fresh diesel we got from the nearest IOC. What we saw was indeed surprising. The diesel drained out from the tank was indeed light orangish, making us think that a good amount of petrol was mixed with diesel. The fresh diesel we got from IOC was light green in color. Just wondering how could this happen. We got the confirmation that it was indeed diesel which was filled by the petrol bunk guy.

With the fresh IOC diesel, the DDiS is all fine again

@rajswiftvdi, howz the route all the way? I heard after the rains, it was pathetic near palakkad. Is it all fixed now?

If you want to go to Kottayam, I would prefer Hosur - Krishnagiri - Salem - Dindigul - Theni - Kumily - Mundakkayam - Ponkunnam - Kottayam. I did Bangalore - Kumily [500 kms] in 8 hours flat! this is maintaning constant 100 kmph speed and neat gear changes and got a mileage of 22 kmpl with 60 5 AC and 3 adults.

Regular 5k check up and if you want get the oil and oil filter replaced with Mobil Delvac MX. Apart from this you can ask them to clean the air filter by blowing air and note down any specific problems which you might have noticed.

Service Details For Swift Diesel

Sorry for taking the thread away from the ownership review, but couldn't help noticing that everyone seems to be asking about services/costs and what work should be done in each service.

I'm posting my entire service history below (1st to 4th Service and the jobs done). I go by the service book as far as servicing is concerned with a few extras (eg. oil change at 1st service).

The only extra item in all my services is the engine oil additive ("Oil Treatment" - I am contemplating not putting this in any more - it's just 30 ml of some stuff that costs almost as much as the engine oil). Sorry about the text alignment, was pasting from excel and didn't have the patience to clean it up.

Service and labour charges should be same across Maruti network, right?
Pratham Motors, Bangalore charged me Rs.200+ (don't remember the exact amount) for disk brake cleaning labour charges and Rs.750 for paid service!
Is he simply looting if this is the case?!

Wrong. Each MASS can have its own labor charges. Bangalore is expensive by about 25%. Software city has its own overheads.

Hi Jaggu,

You are suggesting Mobil Delvac MX or is it the OE for swift D? Even my swifts 20k service is due this month and i have 600kms more to do for that.

MASS told me it would cost 7.5k for the 20k service. Is that nominal?

There is only one problem i ve been facing from 2nd service.Thats the suspension noise when i drive over the potholes and during the left turns.THIS IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED by MASS till date ,reason being i dont get that sound when i complaint to them

Body Repair

Guys - Sorry for the OT but i need your help here. My 2 month old 3000+ kms driven swift vdi met with an accident couple of days ago. A guy on a bike fcame from the opposite side and rammed the right side of my car. This was not my fault at all as he was looking behind and waving at somebody when this happened. Due to the impact the right RVM came out and hit my face and fell inside the car. I have some small cuts on the face (nothing major to worry).

There are are dents and scratches all along the front fender, front and rear right doors and the running board as well. I checked with Mandovi, bannerghatta road and they say it might cost around 16k for tinkering and painting.

Can you pls point how best to get this job done and where in bangalore? Will the tinkering and painting job restore the original look and feel? If not what are the alternatives?

thanks in advance.

Am suggesting Delvac since it gives the best results in our driving conditions, next is Mobile Super 1300 and last choice would be Servo.

All these were OE but M.A.S.S keeps on changing the brand based on the best deals they get from the supplier.

Regarding suspension sound, is it kat kat sound from the steering? Then its the steering damper, no known solutions yet apart from tightening and greasing it, which will keep the sound muted/at bay for sometime.

Try Sai Colorium JP Nagar, they do a good job. Also Suraksha at Adugodi for body work.
