Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

This was taken in Solang Nala or Solang valley. Got to use 4H even though I felt that it was not needed with the amount of power that the Petrol has. Have driven it almost 1600 kms in the past 21 days of ownership and loving every bit of it. Drove all the way back from Bhurwa (village in Manali and its between Manali and Solang) to Chandigarh almost non-stop. Took a hault in Sundernagar and then in Jahu.

I was with my Wife and 5 year old Daughter ( a travelogue + ownership review is coming soon too), and we did not feel any fatigue or tiredness, Covered the 320+ kms distance in 10 hours and they both were sleeping for almost 6+ hours. Out of 300 kms, I would say that a stretch of almost 40 kms of road was in a really bad condition. I can proudly say that Thar for me is a Family Car because its definition is subjective and differs from person to person.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Since we are getting to see "Thar in Hills" pics, wanna know how's the average of Petrol engine on Hills? Is it as bad as 4/5 or respectable at around 8/9 kmpl?

Also did you guys faced any issue related to quality of petrol during your hills drives?

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Did the PDI for a friend's Thar today, realized there's been some silent cost cutting -

One of the USB ports does a disappearing act - is this 'new' to 2022 Thars, or did it happen in 2021 itself?!
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-photo_20220224_134202.jpg

This is in addition to these placeholders getting deleted somewhere in 2021 itself - use-case is for the DEF Guard (that I know of) -

Good catch. The fast charge port seems to have disappeared. It is there in my 2021 October

The headlights setup looks good. Where did you get this work done and can you share the cost because I am also planning for upgrading the Headlights and Foglamps.

Whom so ever is getting a mileage of 4 or 5 in hills with a Thar Petrol might be driving it in 4L all the time. So far I have filled my Thar with 54 Litres + 24.41 Litres + 34.1 Litres + 15 Litres + 45 Litres = 172.51 Litres. And it shows total kilometers driven as 1640 kms. So 1640/172.51=9.5 and it is showing a range of 90 more kilometers. This I am calculating Tank to Tank or good old method.

Thar was driven from Paonta Sahib (Dealership) to Chandigarh and then to Manali via Swarghat. Drove in Manali/Bhurwa and Solang, had to engage 4H for half a Kms. On the way back to Chandigarh took the Jahu- Una road. Out of 1640 Kms, I can say that 1200 kms has been highways (State and National), rest all is city driving. This is a darn good mileage for now and the service center guys were saying that they have owners getting 12 to 14 with 50 percent of Highway driving after 5000 kms to 6000 kms in Petrol Manual. I would be extremely happy if I get 12 kmpl Tank to Tank in longer run.

Mine is a Jan 2022 Model and its omitted but could see that the Automatic still retains it, now I am not certain that the Automatic variant was a 2021 or a 2022.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Did some DIY Puddle lamps on my Thar this weekend. Nothing fancy, just a IP67 Led strip under the door using 3M double sided tape. Power is from the door open wire from the Dome light.

Ahaaan! This is something I was looking out for. Can you please elaborate a bit on the connection from dome lamp? Does puddle lamp work even when lamp is in off position?

Also, since it's from dome light won't both puddle lamps light up even when you open one door?

I used a Scotch lock splice connector to tap power from the dome light wire. Its the wire with a green stripe on the upper top right slot on the dome light coupler when seen from the coupler's side having the retaining clip. Used just one wire for the power and routed through the Passenger side's upper plastic trim to the Passenger side footwell. For the negative connection, I used a terminal connector and used a bolt near the door wiring coupler. This wiring harness has a 5A fuse as well.

Yes, the puddle lamps work for both doors, when I press unlock button on the keyfob or open a door, both led strips turn on. I have also installed footwell light connected to the same wiring. All these LEDs light up when I unlock or open the door. This wiring is not effected by the dome light switch. For that, we would need to solder two wires for positive and negative to the dome light switch.

I guess, Only way to have puddle lamp to be door specific is to use a pressure sensitive switch or magnetic sensor switch with an overriding on-off button.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

@dr_TJ, I must say that it s very purposeful mod or DIY. So helpful when you are getting out of the car in areas which are scarce with light. Will see if there is anyone locally capable of performing this mod for me.

Yes, very helpful in the dark.
All we would need is a good quality led strip or led light. For perfect installation, using high quality LED drilled into the plastic door pad will be wonderful.
I just didn't wanted to remove the door panels so stuck the led strip below the door panel.

You are right, both USB 1 fast charger slot and placeholders are missing in my Jan 22 D MT model.

Got these from SAAK Auto, Chandigarh. They're the official dealers for BIMBRA 4x4.
Headlights costed around 16K and Fog lights 9K.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I found a video regarding various 7 inch headlight options. Most of the 7 inch headlights that are available here in India are chinese generic sealed LED lights.
And since we need to remove the entire front end to replace the Headlights on the Thar, I am really sceptical about using these sealed LED headlights. And if these sealed LED headlights fail, we are back to removing the entire front end to replace those. More annoying is the real price of these Headlights when we search for them in Aliexpress. Prices are severely inflated once it goes on sale here in India

Projector retrofit or just Projectors with some 7 inch mount for Headlights on the Thar will be the best solution by far. Any cheap Bi-Xenon Projector like from iPHcar would be good enough for that. We could use a good quality H8 HID Bulb or H8 LED bulb inside the projectors. If something fails, just need to replace the bulb, which will be pretty easy
