To the best of my knowledge I think this gentleman also has the largest FIAT collection ever owned by a single individual anywhere in the world. At last count it was in excess of 40 for sure :-) Always happy to be proven wrong.

They are Millecento's and next to them are the Elegants. What also interested me is the registration no's, I could count 8 different states in that pack of a dozen varying from AP to WB.

I'm a confirmed introvert. Yet, here I am, barging into people's houses, asking them if I can click pics of their car and chatting away with total strangers. My mom is pretty shocked.

Anyway, this Super Select stays less than 50mts from my house. After months of stalking, finally managed to get some pics of the car. It's a daily drive and the owner sure belts it! It's a pleasure seeing it zooming around.

Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

I keep seeing this neat Select which is often parked opposite to my house. Today I got a chance to check it out closely and I liked what I saw!

Car definitely did not leave factory like this. Used to see quite a few station-wagon conversions in Bangalore. There was a green station wagon in Basavanagudi that was running until late 90's. I wonder what happened to the car, I guess it was owned by writer P Lankesh. Someone in the same lane had a white and blue Standard Pennant.

Dear Gowtham - this is the quintessential "Premier Safari"! It was made in Kurla plant as "PDA" (Premier Drive-away Chassis) with a half roof and only primer with no paint, and the body was made by Starline Motors at their Bhandup workshop. Starline Motors was owned by Deepak Chopra, an avid rallyist and my very good friend. You can see that the rear bumper is fitted inverted, this was done to allow the side opening tailgate to work! . Anything sold in those days but those were the days! Things have changed, but not necessarily for the better!

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Oh!
Initially, I did tell my friend that it was a Safari, but then I recalled seeing different taillights (horizontal ones) and a slightly different rear cover. So, I told him that it was probably a modified President.

We had a 1982 Premier Safari that was sold (sadly) in 1999 when we got a new Maruti Zen. I believe there were 2 versions of the Safari; one had rounded corners with tail-lights similar to Tata Sumo and the other was the one in the picture with regular padmini tail-lamps and angular fin-tail (similar to Fiat Drive-away chassis). But the rear glass of this particular Safari is slightly less raked then what i have seen.
Only Behrambhai can throw some more light on this.
BTW, one of my friend here in Ahmadabad has a very well maintained '82 Safari that still drives good.

Dear K.K.Vaidya - hello after 2 and a half months! Please give my regards to your mother and family! .

All Premier Safari bodies were built by Starline Motors. Some were with the Padmini tail lights and some were with the horizontal tail lights. Some were with the slightly less raked rear door and some were with more raked rear door. By the way (I think I had mentioned this somewhere on the forum before also), the very first Premier Safari was built in 1973. It was blue in color and was delivered by Deepak Chopra to the film actor Shatrughan Sinha from the Starline Motors showroom which was opposite the Tardeo Air-conditioned Market. I was standing next to the car when it was delivered, so I know. This means that the very first Premier Safari was made on the Premier President base car, because the Premier Padmini came into existence only in 1975. By the way, the color of the first Premier Padmini delivered in Mumbai was green, its number series was MMB but I do not know the numbers.

There was one Premier Safari near my house in Pune. I tried to acquire it a couple of years back but it did not quite work out. Not seen now.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Re: Restored Fiats (Super Select & Others)

Saw an exceptionally well maintained Milliecento at Mysore. The front grill was so immaculate, too bad I was on my two wheeler and couldn't click enough pictures. Only one came out well.
