Superb thread of my most favourite cars.
Already given 5 star rating.

Since my childhood I love Ambys may be because during 80s every day Amby used to come to our home to pickup and drop my grandfather and those days it was told to me that only when you achieved very high post in office then only you get the AMBY. Obviously that was true in 80s. Also car to pickup and drop from office that itself head turner for most of people in our residential area.

I actually considered Amby while buying my DZire but did not select due to bomb cost to run and maintain Amby. But my dream is to have Amby in my garage in future. Hope HM listen to Amby lovers and won't let Amby die.
HM should keep target to take AMBY to Mini or VW Beetle.

Wake up HM Wake up!!!
Even in current days also TopGear selected Amby among world's TAXI list. That itself is great point to consider. IMO to become popular among taxi market is not at all bad thing but it proves that car is sturdy, built to last for years and very low on running and maintenance costs.
My few thoughts directly from heart!

It has a floor mounted gearbox, so not entirely original. Maybe it is fitted with Matador diesel or OVH petrol or modern Bmc diesel. (I'm not sure). Post some pictures of the engine.

Amit - honestly saying I didn't notice the gear shift. I have no clue if the car has an original engine but chances are it is dieselized.

Lovely photos! i used to see a similar Mark 3 taxi when studying at schhol. Until one day, it simply disappeared.

The second picture shows the famous number plate styling of the black amby. Was pretty common even when I was at school. Now its completely vanished.

The MGR Museum in Chennai displays the veteran actor-politician's Ambassador car and many more items. It receives about 500 visitors or so a day.
