Just came across this. So now in case of a fall, wearing a substandard quality helmet (ISI branded) will lead to insurance payout, but wearing a DOT, SNELL etc. rated ones will cause a rejected claim.

According to the BIS website, most of the products including (I'm just guessing) helmets are self-certified. Further, there is something called as the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), which gives the ISI mark to them as well. I couldn't find names of MT Helmets, LS2, Shoei, etc. in the list of companies with ISI certifications. What is an option for us out there? Just paste an ISI sticker on the helmet?

Though this seems to be the most viable option my moral compass is stopping me from doing so. The government seems to be hell bent on forcing me to use relatively inferior safety gear! I'm also upset they let Dianese set up shop in India without enforcing them to get an ISI certificate. I bought my helmet from their store in full faith they comply with all our road safety rules.

Came across this post in one of the social networking sites. Not sure is Karnataka HC has indeed passed such notification. And by certification I believe it is only ISI mark which is recognized in India.

I think the folks wearing the snell and dot certified lids are just hyperventilating right now. Ofcourse, i am only talking about the police crackdown and not the high court order.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Hello folks,
Based on positive reviews on here (@dkaile et al) I had the MT revenge in mind when I started looking for a helmet. I needed a size M since L was a tad loose for me. The Revenge in size M was extremely tight for me but I figured this would get better. I tried a few more MT models and the MT Mugello felt like a great fit. Maybe my head had a weird in-between size but the Mugello felt slightly better than the Revenge. I understand the Revenge is a better helmet than the Mugello but I decided to forego the 5 Star SHARP rating for slight more comfort (The helmet is as safe as it can get for my riding style). Since this is my beginner helmet I would be pleased if it gives me good company for the next couple years at least. I even got a glossy (ninja) green and black color to go with the KRT scheme Ninja 650 which is a nice touch. It has 2 well-spaced intake vents at the top and one at the chin. I haven’t gotten the PinLock installed yet but based on initial usage I do feel the need, especially in slow city riding in humid Mumbai conditions when not a lot of air flows through the helmet. I did not find it very noisy but then I don’t know what a good quiet helmet sounds like! I am not bothered at all by the noise factor or lack of it in this helmet even during long stretches of highway cruising. It weighs around 1450 gm and feels comfortable for me. The longest I have worn it is 4 hours at a stretch so more to come on the comfort factor. The interior padding especially at the crown could be a bit more plush; but its not a big deal for me. It does not have a dropdown sun visor but my sunglasses fit very comfortably. The Helmet cost me Rs. 4600 which is a good price for everything it offers. I got it from AH helmets in Mumbai and had a good buying experience.
And the murder of the English language on the label, as reported earlier on this thread, continues.

Hello Omkar,
yes, a green helmet would suit Kawasaki green theme, congrats for the bike too. Do consider buying a PinLock lens for your helmet, it would be of great help to avoid fogging of visors. See my details here : http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motorb...ml#post4303807

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Hey guys, quick question. Got a Shark helmet from my friend who barely used it. It’s XL sized which is up to size 60-62 I believe? I’m right in between 62-63. So I’ve used to helmet for longer trips and only right ear is having an issue where it starts to hurt after a while. I have an issue with putting the helmet on and taking it off as well as the ears seem to be obstructing. Now my questions.

1. If I want to keep using the helmet for short city/street rides which is what I do mostly, is there some kind of face mask that can make the helmet slide easily while putting on or taking it off?

2. Does this mean the helmet is too tight for me?

I love the design which gives a Scorpion look from Mortal Kombat and the built in smoked visor that’s perfect in the sun and has been flawless during the night as well. The visor has Carl Zeiss lens. Didn’t know they make helmet visors too.

Hi, picked it up from RedLine Racing in Delhi for 30k. It is the same price as is shown on HJC Europe's website.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

HJC Rpha11 has a 3 star SHARP safety rating. Not something I would pick up when spending big 30 grands on a lid.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Then how about Arai helmets? IIRC only one in their entire range has a 5 star sharp rating, rest all are 3. Still it's one of the most premium and expensive helmets money can buy that adorns the heads of many a professional racers

I would just not depend on the Sharp rating - it has some weird results :-)

RPHA is one of the highest reviewed/rated helmets (except Sharp) - most ppl have called it Arai/Shoei/Schuberth quality at 60-70% price.

Most ARAI designs get the 3 star due to poor results in side impacts. Whereas it covers all other angles pretty well. As for premium and racing - those depends on the money spent on marketing - won't it?

In a similar fashion. I say Swift received 3 stars in Euro NCAP, and you argue Mustang is so famous and premium and it has only three stars - does it make sense?

SHARP testing standards and results are easily available. Unlike other certifications which we can mostly assume only. So why skip it?

Regarding the RPHA - Reason for the 3 star is shown below. Poor side protection. Now that's data which i would consider more relevant over what most people call it. Ofcourse- I might not be knowing everything and if there is similar data which proves this wrong - I'd be happy about it.

Agree with the VFM features point of view though. The Fortnine review (in their usual unbiased style) had only praises for it.
