Nitin,

How did you manage to go through this road? I heard they (some policemen, I think) are taking bribe to let you take this road.

How long did you take to cover the distance?

Covering the 16 Kms took me 30~35 min.

Total distance of 310 Kms from Bangalore to Kannur was covered in 6.5 Hrs including 1Hr break (30 mins for breakfast @ Gonikoppa and 30 min at the Checkpost) Total running in 5.5 Hrs @ an average speed of 85 KMPH

Two days back, Mathrubhumi Bangalore edition reported that the road will be open by 31st May'10. Looks like there are many lobbying behind this, they want this road not to get repaired..!!! :(

If the road not opened beyond May'10, then no point in keeping hope on this route.

Thanks
Rajesh

I don't think both of them have any stake in this. But the seing the road condition for so many years and many many issues behind inviting tender, finally delaying the completion, each one wil suspect there is some lobbying behind. Some people says the Fish suppliers lobby from Mangalore playing behind. If this road is open and good, Bangalore will get fresh supply of fish from Kannur. I really don't know the fact behind, still rumour is rumour..!!!

Thanks
Rajesh

I never knew that there is a fish angle to it :-) Being a fish lover, now I have another reason to pray for this road :-)

Hei Nitin,

I was planning to drive down to kannur sometime this week for vishu as it was planned late and no bus tickets. COuld you please guide me to hte route that you travelled?

If you can help me out to hte route that you mentioned above (310 KMS covered in 5.5 hrs) then i would not mind driving home alone too. And ofcourse do you think the SLR and press visiting card would work again?

Vineesh,

The SLR trick might work but the conditions are you should know fluent Kannada. Should not look like your destination is Kannur. Should have official contact in Virajpet to support in case a senior official is around.

I would suggest you to take the Mysore~HD kote ~ Baveli~ Kattikulam~Manamthavady~Kottiyur~Iritty route insted. The total will be 345 Kms from Bangalore to Kannur. You can do it in 6 Hrs average.

The road is also excellent except for 2 kms inside the forest.

Below it the pic taken last week for your ref.

Sanjay,

Ya this is HD Kote~Baveli~Kattikulam route
.

Its doable in any car.
Its just the layer of metal mixed with soil which is laid before the final tarring is done.

Also the Kattikulam~Tolpatti road is re-laid. So taking the Nagarhole route is also a good option. In this route only 3.5 Kms is bad.(Kutta Police station to Tolpatti Forest checkpost)
