Rajesh, I wanted to drive through Nagarhole and also visit Iruppu falls on the way to Madikeri. The direct Hunsur Madikeri route though short, I personally find it boring.

Just got back from a kannur trip - Took the tried and trusted - Mysore, Gundalpet, S Bathery, Meenangadi, Mananthavady, Koothuparamba, Kannur route. Road conditions are pretty good, except for small patches in between. Took me about 9 hours with breaks for Lunch\tea etc. Is this too long for this route?
Hated the drive from mysore to bangalore - too much traffic on the expressway and lots of slow moving vehicles which were a pain.
Loved driving the S bathery to Gundalpet stretch - very good road.

Looking forward to the opening of the iritty -gonikoppal route.

You took 9 hours (leave about one hour for lunch/tea break- so 8 hours?)
Whats the total distance you covered -about 400kms?

True, share the same feeling. Found too many slow paced two wheelers not giving way on my ride to Mysore last Saturday. It upsets the rhythm of driving.

Looks like there is a big group driving down to Kannur this time. I have changed my plan a little bit. Instead of starting in the afternoon, I am starting in the early morning due to family concerns. My cousin is escorting me in his Santro.

Sarin, Nitin, joining...?

Thanks
Rajesh

Hello Nithin,

Could you please help me with the best route from the below mentioned list. These are consolidated list from the message trails on this subject. I have been planning for a while to drive down to Kannur from channai, didnt get a chance yet. Hopefully in couple of months. I have been to places like Hunsur, Nagarhole, Shettygiri, places around Orange county and virajpet. Trying to tell you that I am femiliar with the other places of Karnataka/Kerala Border. I have taken a print out of the road / route map you have mentioned in one of your post. It was good.

1) Srirangapattana - Hunsur - Nagarhole - Kutta - Mananthawadi - Kottiyur - Peravur - Irrity (Will not touch the town) - Mattanur - Kannur.

2) Mysore - Hunsur - Gonikoppal(Coorg)- Makutta(state border)- Iritty - Kannur : Bad 17km after Virajpet till Iritty, but buses and trucks are still using it.

3)Bangalore - Mysore - HD Kote - Nagarhole - Mananthavady(Kerala) - Periya - Nedumpoyil - Kuthuparamba - Kannur

3.NO(the road from HD Kote to Kerala border is bad) Should cross the forest section before 5 pm

4)Bangalore - Mysore - Gundlupet - SultanBattery - Mananthavady - Periya - Nedumpoyil - Kuthuparamba - Kannur

5)Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Nagarhole - Kutta - Tholpatty - Kattikulam - Manandvady -Nedupoyil - Kuthuparamba - Kannur (356 km only) : Road near Kutta was repaired(Aug 2008) -Can try, Should cross the forest section before 5 pm

6)Mysore - Gundlupet - Bathery - Mananthavady - Kottiyoor-Peravoor-Irritty-Mattanur-Kannur

7) Route : Bangalore ~ Srirangapatna ~ Hunsur ~ Tithimathi ~ Gonikoppal ~ Perumpady ~ Makuta ~ Kootupozha ~ Iritty ~ Mattanur ~ Kannur.

Thanks
- Sanoop

Siju, thanks for the update. So we need to wait for another 2 months..!! Hope by April'10 we can travel through this road...!!

Sanoop, please see the updates in bold.

1) Srirangapattana - Hunsur - Nagarhole - Kutta - Mananthawadi - Kottiyur - Peravur - Irrity (Will not touch the town) - Mattanur - Kannur. -> Currently this is a shortest, and best road. But Nagarhole is opened only between 6am-6pm, so night travel not posssible. From Mananthawadi, you can detour to Nedumpoyil - Koothuparamba - Kannur, which may save a few KMs

2) Mysore - Hunsur - Gonikoppal(Coorg)- Makutta(state border)- Iritty - Kannur : Bad 17km after Virajpet till Iritty, but buses and trucks are still using it. -> Currently this route is closed for vehicle traffic due to repair work.
3)Bangalore - Mysore - HD Kote - Nagarhole - Mananthavady(Kerala) - Periya - Nedumpoyil - Kuthuparamba - Kannur -> Open only 6am-6pm, and you may need an off roader to cross the ghat. Even RTC buses are finding it difficult to run through this route. Once you reached the Kerala Border, the roads are good.
3.NO(the road from HD Kote to Kerala border is bad) Should cross the forest section before 5 pm -> Not just bad, I don't the right words to describe the present condition.

4)Bangalore - Mysore - Gundlupet - SultanBattery - Mananthavady - Periya - Nedumpoyil - Kuthuparamba - Kannur -> Best if you want broader roads and travel in day time. You may need to travel more distance in this route.Beyond 9am, the road is closed at Muthanga ghat.

5)Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Nagarhole - Kutta - Tholpatty - Kattikulam - Manandvady -Nedupoyil - Kuthuparamba - Kannur (356 km only) : Road near Kutta was repaired(Aug 2008) -Can try, Should cross the forest section before 5 pm -> This is same as Option 1

6)Mysore - Gundlupet - Bathery - Mananthavady - Kottiyoor-Peravoor-Irritty-Mattanur-Kannur -> Same as Option 4
7) Route : Bangalore ~ Srirangapatna ~ Hunsur ~ Tithimathi ~ Gonikoppal ~ Perumpady ~ Makuta ~ Kootupozha ~ Iritty ~ Mattanur ~ Kannur. -> Same as option 2

Thanks
- Sanoop
If you want to travel in night, the only option at present is Bangalore ~ Srirangapatna ~ Hunsur ~ Gonikoppal ~ Ponnammed ~ Kutta ~ Manathawadi.

Thanks
Rajesh

Sanoop,

As Rajesh mentioned, The best route as of now would be no 1 and 5.(Though the Nedumpoyil Koothuparamba road is little bad)

If you are traveling in the night, I would suggest you start from chennai at midnight 12 and reach Nagarhole around 6am. You will reach Kannur by 9.30~10.00am.

But if you are planning to travel to kannur after Jan or Feb, then the best route would be no 2 & 7 (Which are same) as this road will be open after repairs.

Thanks
Nithin
