may be, but how is the road condition.?
Yesterday., I took the route Mananthavady (near periya -there is the tea estate ,there is small shop seeling seelling tea powder, directly from the estate -Rs.140 per kilo- from there a righturn and the palchuram starts)-palchuram-kottur, irrity, srikantapuram,Thaliparamba, payyannur.
But the problem is from irrity to Thaliparamba the roads have too many curves and you cannot maintan a healthy speed and some delay will be there.

Not that good, seems some patch work done.
I thought, I could have reached faster If I followed the original route
i.e M.vady-Nedumpoyil-kuthuparambu-Kannur-payyannur, because the
roads are straight and can push the car in better speed?

Crossing Kannur during in the day time is a pain due to the heavy traffic, and narrow roads till "Valappattanam" Bridge from Thazhe Chovva. So I would suggest to take this route only in night. Currently the Nedumpoyil - Koothuparamaba road is not in good condition, where as you will get good roads till Payyanur via Peravur - Irritty - Irrikkur - Thalipparamba.

Thanks
Rajesh

It was a sunday hence not much traffic.
Also the problamatic place may be from caltex junction to puthiyatheru -thereafter
it is easy to drive. Anyway the drive was over -will try next time some different route- may be by that time the virajpet road will be opened for traffic?

Stay at Kannur

Hi Everyone,
We are planning to go to Kannur for 2 days either this weekend or the next. We will drive down from Blore and back. Can someone suggest a comfortable, affordable and clean beach resort/homestay as close to the beach as possible?
Also, given the cloudy weather in Bangalore, is Kannur a good option to spend the Christmas/New Year weekend?

This is the best beach resort in Kannur that I would recommend - The Mascot Beach Resort, take a look at their website for more details - Mascot Beach Resorts is situating at Kannur (Cannannore), kerala, india

Best option to spend the Christmas / New Year weekend would be Goa anyday !

Hi Devdath,

If you are new to Kerala, I would suggest you to check the Harthal schedules at harthal, Hartal, Bandh, Work stoppage of Kerala and West Bengal crippling the daily life and economy - www.harthal.com site before starting your trip...!!!!

Kannur doesnot have much option of Beach resorts, if you need a river side resorts, try in Kannur Resort | Kairali Riverside Resort Kannur or Nalanda Resorts Kasargod Kerala,Kasargod hotels, kasargod resorts,Budget Hotels in Kasargod,Accommodation in Kasargod . Nalanda resort is around 60KM north of Kannur.

Thanks
Rajesh

I completely am with you but this time we preferred a silent, not so touristy place with a beach, hence we chose Kannur. We have been to Pondy but as you know the beaches there arent very "playable".

That was one good site and I had a look at it. Luckily no harthals planned for the New Year/Eve.

Also, which route would people recommend to take from Bangalore to Kannur and back? It need not be the same route if there is something else to enjoy while travelling, like a scenic road/beach drive/good road etc.

All,

Yesterday I came via the Nagarhole - Kutta - Manathawadi - Kottiyur - Irritty - Thalipparamba - Payyanur. The road from Kutta to Kattikula is in pathetic shape. You need be extreamly patiant to drive in this stretch. Here is some snaps

Not many available, you'll be really lucky if you got bookings in Mascot, I were there last year during christmas and tried getting mascot 1 month before but no luck.

Hi all,

Just back from a 6 day trip - 5 days at Kannur and 1 day near Irpu falls. We had a fantastic time.

We took the Hunsur-Kutta-Mananthavady-Koothaparamba route. The road upto Kutta is in good shape. From Kutta to Tholpetty was a nightmare. They have done a fair bit of patchwork and repair from Tholpetty to Kattikulam. One can actually do speeds of 50kmph. There are a few potholes but apparently the road was far worse. The stretch between Periya and Koothuparamba in the ghats has some lousy stretches.

We stayed at an absolutely lovely beach place called the Seashell Inn. It is about 7 km from Kannur (towards Thallissery) in a place called Adikadilyai Last and is run by Mr.Haris. It is on a small cliff and the beach is down. Not too many people at the beach. Great food and a great host make the place unforgettable.

On the way back we stopped near Irpu falls and stayed in a homestay. The initial stretch between Kutta and Irpu (the road to Gonikoppal) is dreadful.

We took the same route back.

Srivathsa

P.S. A KSRTC (Kar) gave my car a dent at the back. We had stopped at a hairpin bend on a downslope waiting for this chap to come uphill. He turned too sharp and on his exit from the bend touched my car at the back - a minor dent and some scratches. I had stayed to the extreme left and was stationary. My first dent in 21 years of driving and I was not even moving
