re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

I can also confirm that the Bridge Over River Cauvery (cannot stop smiling for that sentence) is most certainly opened and has reduced the overall distance because we do not need to take the detour. Plus good roads either side of the bridge. But please be aware of the huge hump when approaching the bridge.

Update also for the Gundulpet - Mysore road. Roads till Nanjangud has been completed around 80% with around 4 diversions still present but nothing major.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

Dear all,

Planning a day trip to see Somnathpur temple from Bangalore. Would NH 209 route be the best option to take ? I believe all the construction work on bridges on NH 209 has been completed.

As per Google Maps this route takes about 3 hours from Bangalore whereas taking Mysore Road takes 30 minutes longer.

Thanks in advance!

If you take Mysore Road, you'll have to travel thru Mysore-Bannur road that isn't finished yet. OTOH, if you come via NH209, the roads between malavalli and bannur is pretty much finished and it will be a lot smoother

Thank you SunnyBoi, as per your advice I will take NH209 from Bangalore all the way to Santhemala (just before Bannur) and take the left turn towards Somnathapura.

I took this stretch on my way back from Hoganakkal falls yesterday. The road expansion work has started between T.Narasipura and Mysore and you will have to take diversions every 2/3 kms. Kollegal - T.N. Pura is good, mostly in good shape.

How bad is the road condition considering the diversions (between T.Narsipaur & Mysore) ?

One more question, did anyone travel on Malavalli - Maddur road recently? I last traveled in this road 2 yrs back; it was patchy and with lots of potholes. Any recent update on this road's condition?

I think there was a recent update that it continues to be bad. Malavalli-Bannur work is progressing well but still work in progress closer to Mysore side.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

I am planning to travel to Ooty from Bangalore tomorrow. The tentative plan is to start early at 4 am, cross Mysore by 6:30 am and at least reach Bandipur by 9 am with one stop for breakfast not exceeding 20 mins. From Bandipur, i am planning to take the Gudalur-Ooty route. I will be driving my Punto 1.2 Fire Petrol (Dynamic) and will be accompanied by my wife, sis-in-law and her kid and my mother in law. Just wanted to check if there are any very steep inclines enroute to Ooty which i will be having a problem negotiating with my Punto. Also, any inputs on the current road conditions will be really helpful.

Yes, 4am start will be good when taking Mysore route. But all breakfast places on this route will open only by 6:45am, so your ideal stop could be Kamat Madhuvan near the Mysore Palace, so you're almost out of Mysore city and away from city traffic. This road will lead to Nanjangud and then Gundlupet which has some road widening work in progress but manageable. After Gundlupet, go straight towards Bandipur (ignore right turn into the forest which goes towards Sulthan Bathery). Once you get into TN side (Mudumalai) you will see a left turn near the visitors centre - this is the road that goes to Ooty via Masinagudi - 36 hair pin bends, and good ghat road. I think you can do this for your onward journey. If you do not take this left turn going straight will take you to Ooty via Gudalur, there are some broken patches on this stretch and is longer by 20-30 Km. This is more gradual than the 36 hair pin bend route, but I would still recommend that unless you are totally paranoid about the steep roads.

*In case you reach Kamat Maduvan too early and it's closed, then proceed towards Gundlupet where you have a Misty Rock/Deshell restaurant on right side and a Cafe Coffee Day on the left, these could be your breakfast options.

Thanks a lot NPV. I would proceed via Gudalur as 36 hair pin bends will induce vomiting for the ladies and the kid i am travelling with. Also, i am a bit skeptical vis-a-vis the behaviour of 1.2 Fire Petrol on really steep inclines.

The stretch from Theppakadu (where you would take the left if you plan to go via the Masinagudi-36 hairpin route) to Gudalur is very bad with large potholes and broken stretches. I assume it would have got worse after the rains. So that is something to be prepared for, in addition to the longer distance and commute time.

If it is feasible, would recommend to consider the 36 hair pin bend route. The climb is very steep and I think you climb to the top in ~12-15km from the base. So maybe you will reach on top before any motion sickness kicks in . (Of course, you know best. Just a suggestion)

A Punto will have no trouble at all climbing the 36 hair pin bends, people do it in much smaller cars all the time including Nano's and M800's

I think the Gudalur route is worse for people who tend to get car sick. Longer, people drive faster, many curves, too many buses and trucks spewing smoke.

Just my personal opinion.
