Dehradun, Jul 29 (PTI) Landslides triggered by heavy rains blocked two key highways connecting major pilgrimage centres of Rishikesh, Gangotri and Badrinath in Uttarakhand today, leaving hundreds of people stranded. The landslides struck the Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway (NH-108) at Nalupani area in Uttarkashi district and Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway (NH-58) at Chhinka area in Chamoli district, sources in Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre (DMMC) said.

The personnel of state police and Border Road Organisation have been pressed into service to clear the debris and open the road for vehicular traffic, they said. Meanwhile, nine persons, including a woman, were injured when boulders hit them while travelling in a jeep in Chami area of Uttarkashi district.

The woman, who was injured seriously, has been admitted to hospital, they said.

Yes, ranjitp1, the news is quite grim.
Floods in Warangal, Khammam, Bhadrachalam, Eturunagaram.
Vizag-Jagdalpur road is closed due to floods.
I don't want to even think how bad the Bhadrachalam-Jagdalpur road via Sukhma will be!

Mumbai-Goa Highway

TOI reports that traffic between Mumbai and Goa was affected as a river near Kudal in Sindhudurg district swelled up, cutting off vehicular movement for more than six hours on Thursday. The road connecting Pune and Sindhdurg was closed and there was waterlogging in Kankavli.

>>> hvk,

Today's HT Mumbai reports that the all seven sluice gates of the Radhanagari dam have been opened to relieve the pressure of heavy rainfall over the past week or so on its catchment area in Konkan and western Maharashtra. The Bhogavati river on which this dam is built, joins the Panchganga river near Kolhapur. It also goes on to say that all the three roads from the Kolhapur to Konkan region, viz. Amba ghat, Amboli ghat and Phonda ghat have been blocked due to gushing waterfalls and minor landslides.

Further, once the Bhogavati waters proceed, Kolhapur city is expected to be under water by Friday morning. That is today.

Regards

Any idea of the present conditions?

Here is my experience of NH17 between Magalore to Calicut -

Mangalore - Ullal - Uppala : Road broken in several places. Full of potholes and ditches. Took nearly hour and a half to complete this stretch.

Uppala - Kasargod - Kanhangad - Kannur : The road is OK from the RTO check post on Kerala side to just before Kannur. There are a few potholes and the shoulder is messed up in some places, but nothing to be worried about.

Kannur - Tellicherry - Mahe : One word - AWFUL. NH17 (from just outside Kannur Town) is no longer a road. Looks like some floods have devastated the roads. And the portion which goes through Tellicherry and Mahe towns is just ditches and craters! This 30 km stretch took about 2 hours to complete.

Mahe - Calicut : Fairly OK. There are a couple of small portions which have broken up - not a cause of worry. Think the work done on this stretch has held up to the rains - so far!

My niece came from Coimbatore to Calicut via Palghat. She says the road is OK - the usual bad sections near Walayar. The Palghat ghat is OK.

Travellers on this road will be aware of the numerous bridges - almost all the rivers are swollen - especially the Tellicherry one. I think this is the place where the sea enters inland on some occassions.

My FE took a beating. Approx 30 litres consumed for covering a distance of ~260 kms - worse than what I used to get in the city!!

Great update, the first of the season! Road conditions are predictable, although I am surprised about the road being so bad around Kannur, expected it to be its worst in the KA-KL border.

After a gap of years, I had been upto Kannur on Jun 03 / 04 of this year. I never expected those good roads to deteriorate to the state described here. So sad!

Thanks, hvk sir!.

I was also surprised, because I had just done this stretch earlier on June 3rd week when it raining heavily, and the conditions were not so bad. Never expected it to become so worse.

My rant on this follows (below)!!

Returned from Calicut (to Pune) yesterday. Thankfully, by Volvo!!

Can't give any update on Calicut to Mangalore, as the journey was by train. Netravati is full - great sight. The water has turned reddish brown!!

Here is the road condition between Mangalore to Pune -

Mangalore - Udupi - Kallianpur - Bydanur : Usual condition near Surathkal. Between Surathkal and Bydanur a few broken patches. Bad for cars. Volvo treated these with contempt.

Bydanur - Bhatkal : Volvo met it match!! Bottom scraped twice and couldn't climb out of one. Driver had to reverse the bus and try a way around the ditch. There is no road - it is all potholes.

Bhatkal - Honnavar - Ankola : There are again a few bad patches, nothing which upset the Volvo. But the other vehicles on the road were having a tough time.

The bridges and the entry / exit point at all the bridges are in pretty bad shape. All the rivers are full and Sharavati was in full flow.

Volvo took about 6 hours from Mangalore to Ankola.

Ankola to Hubli - managed to sleep in most of the places! Which meant, except for some rough patches where I woke up the road is good.

Hubli to Pune - Didn't feel a thing, except a few rumbles here and there. Should have been after Nippani, because I distinctly remember the NH4 smoothening after the Hubli-Dharwad bypass, the twists and turns of the Tawandi Ghat. Most likely somewhere nearer Kolhapur. (Woke up again near Khambatki Ghat )

Left Ankola at 11.00 PM and reached Shirval by 6.30 AM (distance of about 500 km)! Guess that road is OK.

1. Normally when I drive, if I come across a bad driver or bad piece of road, I just let the steam off by letting loose a few expletives!! Thereafter, forget it and enjoy the road and drive.

This time, I really lost my cool. Especially between Kannur-Mahe and Udupi-Honnavar. In fact, I have a solution. Whoever is in charge of this road, and, whoever constructed this road should be made to drive a M800 (or a Honda City or any other low ground clearance car) on this stretch DAILY up and down twice. Then they will be able to taste their own medicine.

See, NH17 in some stretches between Udupi and Surathkal , newly laid, still intact despite the same torrential rains. NH63 also intact mostly. Then how come, only a few stretches breakup so badly?

2. The KSRTC airavat appeared to be a new model volvo - B9R? There is a separate emergency door between the seats (as opposed to a window serving the emergency purposes in B7R). Am I right?
