I am planning a trip to Nagpur on 27th. In my last trip in July 2012, the road upto Pandharkawada after AP Border and a stretch of road upto Hinganghat after Pandharkawada were in a very very bad condition. Is there any improvement now? Is the Armoor Bye pass opened for traffic?

Armur bypass is open, the border to Pandharkawda is still bad if not worse and the Karanji to Hinghanghat is also bad.No change on any of these sections.Budget for a 8hr drive.

re: Hyderabad to Nagpur : Route Queries

Due to a personal emergency, I started by bus (Volvo) from Hyderabad on 11th October 2012 at 9:45 PM and reached Chatrapati Square, Nagpur at 7:15 AM. The ride in the bus between 3:30 AM to 6:30 AM was horrible, probably due to the roads conditions indicated by members in the previous posts.

Also on the way back, I left Nagpur at 10 PM and reached Hyderabad at 6.30 AM today morning. The bus ride from 10:30 PM to 1:30 AM was slow due to bad road conditions. The bus driver was driving (weaving) as if he was playing a video game to avoid the potholes!!

Could not verify if any diversions were taken during both to and fro trips since it was a Volvo AC sleeper bus with hardly any view.

As bad as ever or as could be or ever was. Ensure that you are on that stretch during full daylight and keep enough margin in your proposed itinerary if it takes too long. A few months back, a cartoon picture went viral on FB showing a truck in a pot hole with the caption explaining on how bad the road conditions in India are...Yes, I have actually seen a full truck within a pothole on that stretch. After I saw the truck. I did not hesitate to drive in the wrong lane into the oncoming traffic till Hingaghat with a rule to stick to that ;lane which sees more traffic instead of driving on the left and correct side.

This is really sad! Not sure when (if at all) this stretch will be done up! So where and how long (in km) are these bad stretches?

IIRC roughly for around 30kms between Adilabad and P'kawda and then for another 40-50km between Karanji & H'ghat.

Ranjit & others - any idea how is the road condition now? I am travelling from Hyd to Kanha this weekend and would appreciate if anybody can help me with the road conditions (especially between Adilabad - Hinganghat & Khawasa to Ruukhad).

Road around Pandharkawda is still bad-no work has happened there and same problem around Hinghanghat as well-Status quo.

Last heard the ghat sections Khawasa was bad,no recent update from me.

Instead why dont you take the Chhindwara-Seoni route to avoid the Pench dirt road?

Yep. No changes. I did it 3 weeks back.

Yes, the ghat section around Khawasa is still bad but given that the destination is Kanha, I do not think there is any option other than going via Khawasa-Seoni. Going via Chhindwara would be too big a detour IMO.

re: Hyderabad to Nagpur : Route Queries

Ranjit & cool_dube, thanks much! Guess I will have to live with those bad streaches, yet again :(

I called up a few acquaintances in Pench & Ruukhad and got to know that of the 35Km bad streach, around 15 to 20 km is now done up well and construction is in progress in the remaining parts.

And yes, I did contemplate taking the Chindwara-Seoni route but that would take up an extra 1.5 to 2 hours of the total travel time. Further, I heard from the manager at Bison retreat (Rukhad) that the Chindwara-Seoni highway tends to have very heavy traffic.

re: Hyderabad to Nagpur : Route Queries

Did Bhopal-Nagpur-Bangalore on the weekend of 17th November. There are 2 patches of 20 kms which are bad, definitely not 40kms each.

1. 21 kms before and ending at P'Kowda : Mix of good and bad. Only one side of the road is available, with multiple diversions to either side. Some patches are ok, some are bad.

2. 22 kms before and ending at Wadner : really bad. No signs of road. Also it's very dusty so if you're behind some trucks, can't even see the roads. Done the trip in XUV so managed some how. Will be tough for vehichle with low GC and definitely not for night drive.

Thanks abhi, unfortunately, its a combination of both, low GC & night drive. Our first safari at Kanha starts at 6AM, Saturday. So we have to reach by 5AM, so have to start Friday afternoon and will hit these patches only after the sun goes down.

I will update this thread with the latest info once i am back.

Drive safe, drive slow and do add a couple of extra hours margin to your driving plans as a buffer. Take Care!

Welcome. Just a clarification. Directions in my earlier post are from Hyderabad to Nagpur. So once you reach P'Kwada & Wadner, worst patches are over and rest is all good.

Have a safe trip.

Thanks abhi. I remember this was the same state of affairs in Apr/May as well
Has anyone got any idea why the MH side of the roads are taking such a long time to be done up? Last heard (ranjitp1 - post 92 above), the armur bypass is also open, which means the AP side on NH7(AH43?) is 100% complete.
