It's not going to be an arrow straight line going by maps satellite view. There is a major bridge work pending over Hemavati river. Usually bridge works are completed first and later on road works are finished. However it doesn't seem to be the case here. There is not much bridge work has been done till now. Don't know what is the delay..

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi
Is anyone driving from Bangalore to / through Belur tomorrow (21st May, Sunday) or Monday (22nd May)?
Got stranded in Belur with a broken coolant hose connector while driving from Mangalore towards Chikmagalur in our Abarth Punto for what was supposed to be a weekend getaway.
Looking for a way to get the part from FASS in Bangalore.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

**Late Post**

Drove to Udupi from Bangalore (last week of April) and back (1st week of May). For the onward journey, I took the Charmadi Ghat . Overall a good experience, scraped surfaces but no bad patches. Fortunately drove on a weekday and hence did not encounter roadblocks and heavy traffic especially on Charmadi. Took the Hassan bypass since the map showed the same time ( longer distance via the bypass). This was a mistake. It reminded me of the old Bangalore Mysore highway with umpteen speed breakers, vehicles parked on the road and also traffic signals at intersections. I Left Bangalore international airport (my wife & younger kid took the flight both ways and I had the elder ones company) at 6:30 and reached Udupi at 4:00. 3 major breaks and a couple of minor ones (first break at Paakashaake, 2nd one at A2B, 3rd at Disha food corner -lunch - Ujire). Fuel stop at MRPL on Bangalore Mangalore Highway.

Return journey, I opted for Shiradi ghat. This forever work-in-progress section was disheartening to see. Considering the ghat sections are almost levelled, I opted for this route, Charmadi would have been tiresome, though scenic. This time around I took fewer breaks as the older one preferred to sleep for a major part of our journey. Left at 8:30, with a fuel break at MRPL Mangalore and coffee break at Lakshmi Nivas Kalladka ( KT Hotel) and lunch Break at A2B ( after Hassan) ( I noticed far too many park the car on the opposite side and walk over to the other side. Its dangerous, and not worth the 1-2 kms fuel they save. The point of taking your car is the convenience it gives you not heartaches with untoward incidents). The road right from Kalladka to Shakleshpur has a lot of detours and it has gravel. Though the road condition is better than what it was when I drove down in December 2022.

Overall - If you are travelling on a weekday both directions, take the Charmadi route and Shiradi for the weekends work.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Drove back from Mangalore to Bangalore yesterday via Shiradi. There is some progress on the concrete sections around Nelyadi but otherwise it was a slush fest until Gundya with frequent crater filled stretches appearing out of nowhere. There is one extremely bad section near Dharmasthala road where the cars were sliding all over the place in the slush. It’s better to stick to Charmadi until the road work is completed (or at least until the monsoon is over).

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Did Bangalore to Mangalore round trip over the weekend. Took Bangalore - Mysore - Madikeri - Mangalore route for both legs.
Though the route is bit longer, the new Bangalore - Mysore expressway makes lot of difference and saves a lot of time.

10 to 15kms close to Mangalore, the road works are going on and lot of diversions. Rest of the roads are pretty good.
The drive from Kansale till Madikeri is very scenic.

Even with 30 minutes break, we covered Mangalore to Bangalore in 6 hours 45 mins.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Driving from Bangalore to Ujire for the first time (have some work in Ujire) , and hence need some help with route suggestions. Plan to leave early morning from south Bangalore, and get back by late night. Driving solo.

What would be the best route in terms of road conditions and ease of driving? Suggestions would be much appreciated! Would like to avoid bad stretches/broken roads as much as possible.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

If you are driving on a weekday, take hassan-belur-charmadi route. If you are driving on weekend, take hassan-shiradi-kokkada-dharmasthala route, roads will be bad for 20kms between Gundya-Kokkada.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

If you are doing the Charmadi Ghat route on Monday morning/noon then please watch out for the oncoming/returning traffic on the Hassan-Belur stretch - took this route recently and there was a mad rush with mostly our BLR registetered cars in full video game mode!
Scary!

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

How is the road condition of the below mentioned stretch ? Will this be a good alternate for Hassan-Belur-Mudigere as the current condition of Hassan - Sakleshpur is almost ready.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Did a Bangalore - Mangalore drive yesterday. Beautiful (mild) rainy weather in the ghats - Charmadi was fully covered in mists. No bad sections faced at any part of the route.

This is Anemahal Hanbal Jannapura road that connects Sakleshpur to Mudigere and was a popular choice when Shiradi itself was closed.

However, this may not save much time today considering the fact that you will still have to cross Sakleshpur end to end to fork out at Anemahal.

The common point between both routes (via Belur or Sakleshpur) is the Huluvagilu junction just before the end of bypass (means you have driven on the Hassan bypass anyway on both routes). From here to Jannapura (on Belur Mudigere road), the route via Belur is faster over Sakleshpur. Crossing Belur for Mudigere road takes lesser time over crossing Belur town. Distance wise, the route via Sakleshpur is 3 km longer over Belur road that's all.

On road conditions of the section you have mentioned, it remains good.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Travelled yesterday from Mangalore to Bangalore using the NH 75(erstwhile NH 48) Shiradi ghat road. It was raining heavily until Sakleshpur. For most part (btn BC road - little before Gundya and Ossoor coffee shop - starting of Sakleshpur bye pass), concrete road is laid at least on one side. There are a few places where still work is going on - hills of all sizes and miztures, sand rocks, etc being flatted. Shiradi ghat road is the usual - beautiful.
It turned out to be better than I imagined/dreaded. But, got a glimpse of the how the road would turn out when completed - 4 lane wide with shoulders, concretized, straightened and hopefully, long lasting.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Team - Planning roadtrip from Chennai to Udupi.
1. Given that work was recently completed in Bengaluru - Mysuru highway, does it make sense to try this route to reduce travel time?
2. Or Belur - Charmady still the best route for Udupi(going by recent updates in this thread)?
Appreciate help from fellow BHPians .
PS : Gonna travel with wife and 2 kids (7yo & 1yo).

If you are traveling to Udupi, Belur - Charmady makes better sense than Mysore expressway. Just hop onto Nice road and exit at Tumkur Road.
