Mishti is adorable.. I too have a maltipoo. His name is Bruno.

His first road trip was Pune - Goa.. after that we had multiple trips to Goa.. recently we did Mysore-Pune.. he did pretty good..

We feed him less than usual during travel days since he will be having limited movements.. we take susu/potty break after every 1.5 to 2 hrs, also we make sure he stays hydrated during the trip..

he sleeps little less than usual during travel days especially when roads are bad or if there is a ghat section.. apart from this we face no issues

hope this helps.. please take Mishti to long drives.. she will be fine and she will enjoy the new location..

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

My Mother Rescued A White Cheeked Barbet.

I am sharing a unique experience we had during covid. It's about a rescue not a pet as eventually the bird was released in its natural habitat.

Year 2020 through the pandemic we all were at home, anxious and worried as everyone was. In those bleak times we noticed small things and found happiness and joy in them.

My mother kept herself busy with growing vegetables, growing a batch of hens and also making some of her delicious recipes.

While tending to the chicken, near the coop she found a baby White Cheeked Barbet which had fallen from its roosting nest. Fire ants had covered the chick and were dragging it away. Overnight they would have made an easy meal of the Barbet chick.

My mother removed the fire ants, cleaned the bird and gave it some water. We had seen the Barbet’s feeding on bananas, papayas and other fruits which we grow.

Mom mashed a banana and fed the hungry Barbet and made it sleep in a small box. By next day morning it was energetic and and hopping around. Soon it started making small flights and perching on things and people around.

Out in the open, the little Barbet kept looking at the branches of trees as if it was searching for its parents. It kept making little flights, which it could do easily as the day progressed.

Mom kept an eye on the Barbet as it hopped around higher and higher up the branches. But soon it was difficult to distinguish the bird as its green coat acted as a camouflage.

We believe our little Barbet would have grown to become an adult bird and would be one among the many Barbet’s around our house which are heard more often that seen by their constant calls “kutrook-kutrook-kutrook”.

A report in TOI refers to a Japanese study that highlights a major health benefit of having a dog as pet. Though pet lovers don't really need a reason to have one, this no doubt, comes as a bonus.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Dear pet parents (in Bangalore),

Our cat, Cleo has been missing for a week now. He was last seen on Wednesday, 29th November at 8.40 AM in our apartment (Brigade Palmsprings, JP Nagar 7th Phase, Bengaluru).

DESCRIPTION OF THE CAT:
Colour: Ginger with wavy patterns on the stomach
Breed: Indie
Age and sex: 2.5 years, Neutered male
Weight: About 5.75 Kgs

It is also suspected that he might have gone under the hood of a car which had gone to Wells Fargo (Sarjapur) that day. The possibility of this scenario is 1%, however, if it this messages reaches anyone working there, kindly look around.

Any leads on this would be extremely helpful!!

From a troubled cat parent, who's lost and gained his cat back after a few days; a few important pointers (ignore if you are already aware)
- most cats will stay in the vicinity of their house/apt/building. It's what they are comfortable with
- most of them are / will be scared and be hiding. So check dark/closed areas in your own building/complex
- keep something of his outside your apartment door (like his own bowl etc). Sometimes it works (did for our neighbours)
- cats are extremely resourceful. They will come back.

Not sure if this details give you any help, ours ran away and was found in one of the basements after 3 days, he didn't even go beyond our apartment parking area, while we went up and down the main streets searching for him.

A previous neighbour's cat ran away and was lost for more than a week. She had done all that she could and had assumed it was dead. But the cat just landed up suddenly one morning meowing outside their door, on their 3rd floor apt. He'd never been out of the house ever before that, they couldn't believe he climbed up the 3 floors and identified the correct apt/floor.

So don't lose hope.

Thanks much for your motivating words! The hardest thing is to fight your mind and not losing hope For the past 6 days I'm not myself and getting lost in thoughts. I've ticked off all the pointers above. Infact I stay on 2nd floor, every day he used to go out at 5am, return for breakfast at 7.30, chase me out of the house if I don't leave for office by 8.10 because he has to escort me to the car. Used to stay out all day however, strictly within the compound of our apartment and walk in at various intervals for the food kept outside our house. That unfortunate day, he was seen in the CCTV camera until 8.40am and suddenly disappeared! (Some blind spots that camera couldn't cover).

Atleast I want to know what happened to him!

Oh, he's an outdoor cat. That changes a lot of things. I assumed yours was an indoor cat. I that case, only time will tell. Not to be pessimistic, he might have gone on "adventures" and be back with a few scars to show. Or things could turn ugly too. My parents' cats are like that, mostly street / local ones that got "domesticated" at our place. Over time, we have lost one or two; in other cases they have come back after many days with fight marks, etc. Can't do much there, it's the risks they endure on a daily basis.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Ok, let me clarify. He was rescued from the street when he was possibly 2 months old. He stayed indoors until he was 6 months old. Then slowly started showing his urge to go out and we started monitoring him for few hours whenever he was out. Eventually we have managed to set boundary for him, which is our apartment compound. And my good guy diligently followed it and used to wait for us to return from office (whenever we go to office). If either my wife or I were staying home, he used to be with us almost throughout the day. In either case, not a single day he was outside in the night! Obviously half the bed was his as a matter of right.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Cats who have got accidentally transported in a vehicle they were sleeping in do have the capability to return even though they are taken to unfamiliar places which aren't near.

I know of a cat who returned 3-4 weeks after he got accidentally taken in an unknown tempo he was sleeping in. He looked a little tired & a few scratches but nothing more than that. Do keep hope.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Hello BHPians!

Meet 'Tommy' (Left), along with his wife 'Rani' (Right)! Tommy is a cross-breed of Beagle-Local while Rani is completely a local breed.

Team-BHPians and their Pets-both.jpg
Sadly, Tommy is wheel-chaired since few weeks, more on this later.

Tommy became our family member in the year 2014: when my brother was coming from school he brought along with him 2 puppies. One puppy is Tommy while another one was a female dog exactly the same as Tommy, which died unfortunaltely within 6 months after being run over by a mini-truck! However, Tommy has been with us since 9.XX years.

Tommy is so attached to my Dad, that he always accompanies him whenever Dad visits office. When Dad returns home for tea break, Tommy can be seen coming along with him. To add to this, he is a front seat lover: always love to travel in car, want to dominate in the passenger seat with slightly lowered windows for him to get a good view!

Team-BHPians and their Pets-frontseat.jpg
One fine Sunday, when Mom and I, had gone for vegetable shopping on our 2011 Innova!

Team-BHPians and their Pets-img_6335.jpg
This was Tommy's usual place to wait for Dad, during his young age! Since 1 year, Tommy's reflex, quickness and activity has reduced.

Team-BHPians and their Pets-driver-seat.jpg
He prefers driver seat when I get down for some period of time!

Recent accident that totally changed Tommy and us:
On 17-Nov-2023, I was at Dad's shop around 08:00 PM when my brother called saying that a vehicle ran over Tommy near our home. I immediately ran out (our home is just behind the shop) hoping Tommy is alright.

At first I assumed it was a stranger's pickup truck which ran over him, but sadly, it was one of our drivers who ran over Tommy unaware of him lying on the road! The vehicle was a 'Mahindra Jeeto Plus' with no goods, thankfully. If the vehicle was fully loaded, that day would have been Tommy's last day!

Immediately, Dad and I took him to the government veterinary hospital, a doctor came upon request from nearby place and gave steriod injection to reduce the pain, but advised us to take X-Ray tomorrow at the earliest. The vehicle ran over Tommy's hip region.

Next day, we got the X-Ray done from Laxmi Meghan Speciality Hospital, Kanhangad and learnt from the senior surgeon that no damage to the bone has occured. This means: Tommy's nervous system (arising from the Spinal Cord) had taken the impact due to which his hip, hind legs and urinary system took the hit. Tommy could not sit for initial few days, it is a case of partial paralysis. Everyone at home were devastated learning that he will not walk again like before. But, I wanted him to be happy atleast. This is when I learnt about the https://www.dogwheelchairsindia.com via Google search who provide wheelchairs to paralysed or injured dogs. Without any second thought, booked the same. Received the product in a week or so.

When we were unboxing, Tommy realised that this wheelchair is for him to walk! With some instructions sent by the owner, I assembled it & placed him. Initially, it was a difficult task: his entire body weight is now handled by his front legs. So, he felt some kind of confusion. But, when I gave a slight push from behind and when Dad encouraged him to walk towards Dad, Tommy understood what needs to be done.

Currently, twice a day, we take him out on this wheelchair so that he enjoys being out like before. There are challenges like he cannot pee by lifting his hind legs anymore, the wheel can get stuck at times and if he tries to climb steps, he can fall back which is again danger for him! But, Tommy is happy, we are happy at home!

Team-BHPians and their Pets-wheeled-solo.jpg
Happy Tommy!

Currently, we all at home are hoping for his speedy recovery!

Regards,
Sud.
