Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Visiting this thread after several years!

For the past many years i only used to workout for about 5-6 days in a month due to lack of time. I wasn't very keen to compromise on my sleep all this while since i spend about 4-5hrs commuting to work & back, but since the start of this month I've started waking up very early in the morning to workout since i've put on weight around the midriff due to having no control over my diet! Now my query is whether its ok to workout on an empty stomach at 6am? If not, what am i supposed to eat? I only workout for about max 35mins, that's all the time that i can manage. I alternate between Circuit Training & Cardio. Rest of my schedule is as follows:
- Breakfast at 7 30am consisting of 2 omlettes + 1 cup of tea
- Lunch at 1 pm consisting of 4 chapatis along with some curry/dal. Rarely eat rice.
- Tea with biscuits at 5pm
- Dinner at 9 30pm - same as lunch
- Fruits only few times a week before Dinner.

Don't compromise on sleep at all, adequate sleep is important but then some get away with 6 hrs while some may need 8-9 hrs. Listen to your body.

Working out on empty stomach is fine unless you're a professional bodybuilder, in which case, you'd know better. Only if you feel exhausted or feel a compromise in training should you eat, otherwise its totally ok to do a moderate 30-35 mins workout on empty stomach.

Banana is a popular preworkout meal and I usually have one when I start hitting really heavy weights or before a strenuous swimming session.

If you want to avoid calorie counting then just continue with this diet for 3-4 weeks and if you still don't see any result that is when you decide to alter it. You already have less time to sleep so I wouldn't recommend getting into any fancy or western diet plans & preparation which would take away another 30-60 mins from your daily routine.

All dals/chhole/rajma, vegetables & fruits should be your best friends from now on, sacrifice a roti but have enough of these everyday.

Do post the progress after a few weeks and we'll make sure to keep you motivated!

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Joined the gym in between for a few months but just could not put myself through the grind so slowly quit

I am 65 kgs and 5 feet 7 inches tall, yes BMI is fine but I have put on weight at the wrong places, a little stomach, double chin and I want all of this gone.

I have been alternating between brisk walking and running when I walk in the garden near our house, each session is about 5 to 7 kilometers and lasts for a approximately an hour and 3 to 4 times a week.

Other than that I am watching out my diet, I average around 1700-1800 calories a day as food intake with 2 to 2.5 litres of water everyday.

Weight does not seem to be reducing quickly even after the calorie deficit and the brisk walks which burn around 225 to 250 calories in each session ( as per MI Fit )

What more can I do?

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Humyum,

It is best to head for the gym and religiously work out every day. My weight was heading to 90kg, so I decided to join up with a gym near my residence. All my life I have avoided gyms and workouts, though I do like to go for long walks. I was walking about 5km every morning, but it did not seem to arrest the weight gain. Joined the gym in Sept and now, four months later, I am down TEN kg and feeling really good. The workout difficulty levels have been incrementally improved. So, I suggest you go back to the gym and workout in a manner comfortable to you. You will also gain a lot of friends.

You absolutely don't need to lose weight. In fact, if you start doing weight training, your weight will increase due to muscle buildup. And that is just fine.

Resistance training is the best (and most fun IMO). See if you can coax yourself back into the gym

The biggest pain for me personally was the travel part to the gym (20-30 mins each way) and I gave up and joined the office gym with sparse equipment

With ever increasing work pressure and crazy deadlines, even that went down the toilet, although I must say that I saw the best (visual) results with weight training

Having lost all my muscle, strength and replacing it with fat has once again raised the same old feeling of disgust in me, and have recently started using Resistance Bands for my workout

Its just been a week but I am thoroughly enjoying myself. Try out different things and see what works. Will post my progress in another couple or so months. All the best

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Has anyone tried ordering from iHerb.com? Their prices are surely mouthwatering.

  • Wanted to know how is their overall experience?
  • Does the shipment reach on time?
  • Customs clearance?

TIA

Don't fall for the mouth watering price on the site. Wait until you provide the location (india) and then see the shipping charges. I have bought Chromium Picolinate from them a couple of years ago. They would quote USD 3.50 for the product and then charge USD 20. I bought twice before I found cheaper suppliers in India. On top of the high shipping charges, Indian customs would add its bit ( now they charge 30% of the value of the product as per their list and not as per the invoice).

Indian Customs have their own price list. They generally doubt the invoice shown by the supplier from select countries (as many Chinese suppliers undervalue their shipment deliberately).

Same here, the deadly deadlines are just putting a thorn in my idea of going to the gym but I shall find/create time to hit the gym!

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Guys,

I am posting here in the hope that someone can help me.

About myself: Working in Miami. A very active person. Ran a few half marathons, play tennis, yoga. This was up-to end of 2015. Life was so happy. Then wanting to be a better runner, started strength training in Jan of 2016. I did not do something right and that started a minute pain in my right knee. Stopped strength training but continued to do run and play tennis. Made a few visits to the doctors office in 2016. Was told everything was alright and continued playing. That minute pain kept on coming. Stopped running and went to doctor in Jan 2017. Put to Physical Therapy. Was told i need to strengthen my VMO muscle(though given exercises to strength all muscles). Felt good in April. Wanted to start running again. Suddenly symptoms changed and something else started happening in the right knee by may 2017. Went to doctor again. Diagnosed with Patella Femoral Syndrome/Chondromalacia/Runners knee. Was asked to do the same exercises. After doing it for months, started feeling better by end november 2017. December was very good. But then something else started happening by end december. I was given exercises to strengthen all four sides of my upper leg muscles. I think the inner thigh muscle or VMO is not as strong as it should be. That is causing a new problem. When ever I sit in a chair, I hear a bone rubbing against bone sound on the top left side of the right knee. No doctor is able to confirm if thats the case. Sometime it gets too difficult to go to work. From January 2017 onwards, I had no fun time for me. As I am the only working person in the family, I am trying my best to see that this does not effect my job.

I request people on the forum if there is a way to figure out which muscle is causing the problem to my right knee. If i can get back to my runners knee excercises for a few more months, i get my life back(not running but atleast taking my 7 year old to the park). I think the inner thigh/VMO muscle is keeping the patella tendon from tracking. I told this my doctors but with no help.

Is there a way to balance my upper leg muscles. Meaning inner vs outer thigh muscles. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

You need a doctor specialized in sports medicine. I doubt any of us here are qualified to advise you.

My friend who was a tennis player suffered some issues in patella. To cut a long story short, he sought the help of a specialist who prescribed some drugs and supplements. He was advised that once some problem occurs in the critical skeletal structures, the prognosis wouldn't be so good. But the treatment worked and he returned to active life - including tennis - though not on a competitive level.

You might find some information here:

I am seeing four orthopedics now. What I need is a good Physical Therapist.

Re: Bodybuilding - Exercises and Supplements

Over the past month, I have discovered an amazing way to reduce the time spent in the gym, while doing the same amount of work.

Its a brilliant hack and I am surprised, I did not do it before.

Leave the mobile phone at home.
Easily translates to a much superior workout with better intensity and less (unnecessary) resting times between sets.

Do you condition your body for playing badminton? If you jump into a new sports, your muscles are not conditioned for it. You need to strengthen the muscles required, separately from the playing time.
