Re: Passport Renewal Procedure Sharing my experience from last week:
Had to apply for renewal of passports - mine and daughter.
The experience was good, unexpected and smooth. Last I'd applied was in 2006 (be at the passport office gate by 7am to join the queue) and for spouse and child in 2009 (great leap - we could get online appointments) to now when we don't even have to carry photographs, seamless really.
The threads here on TBHP have already outlined the details but just my 2 cents here.
** My experience was from a visit to the Passport Seva Kendra at Sai Arcade, Outer Ring Road near Marathahalli/Bellandur.
1.Appointment, Process - once you get the appointment online, plan to reach the Passport Seva Kendra at least 30 minutes earlier. Keep enough buffer time for traffic related exigencies. I started early, took the Yamalur road, then the service road at Bellandur only to find that the road was blocked near Pratham Motors. Made a U-turn and headed back to the Main carriageway of the ORR to reach the seva kendra. Parking is managed well and located right behind the building, but you need to take the second left after the office (first left is a one way but many impatient morons take this!). Once on this road, you will see a signage with arrow, make a left turn for the Passport office parking.
It is paid parking, take the ticket, park the car and take the small bridge and enter the building from the rear entrance. Head to the front entrance, show your appointment letter and enter.
At the reception counters, they check your appointment, documents and give you a token (printout with Token Number and bar code). The Reception and Zone A counters are outsourced and manged by vendors (I think it's TCS). Passport office officials are only involved in Zone B and C processes.
You now enter the main hall to begin the process. The entire process is a 3 stage process involving counters in Zone A, B, and C.
Be seated in the waiting area and pay attention to the multiple displays for status of Tokens. When your token is displayed, move to the inner hall to the counter # listed (A Zone). Here, all details are verified, copies of documents are scanned, bio metrics and photograph is taken and information is uploaded.
The Zone B counters are nearby and there are more displays for them. When your token comes up for Zone B, move to that counter, the official will verify your documents.
Next, wait in the same area and once your counter for Zone C is displayed, go over for the final verification (Grant of passport). Once done, move to the exit counter, present your token and get an acknowledgement and you can head outside - yes, it's that simple!
2.Time Management - Since we had 2 appointments almost back to back, the person at the reception counter asked me to complete my Zone A process and then come back for another token for my child. I was apprehensive about this initially but it worked out wonderfully and the timing was just perfect. By the time my token came up for Zone B, my child had completed here Zone A process and then once my Zone C process was complete, her Zone B was done so it was perfect.
In all, we took about 2 hours from the time we parked the car to reaching the parking lot again after submitting our applications.
3.Document Management - I simply cannot stress on this point more, you have to be well organised to avoid delays. When you print the appointment, 2 additional sheets are printed with details of the documents that can be used as proof. Read this thoroughly and be prepared with originals and copies of these documents. Organise the documents into photocopies and originals separately. One photocopy of each proof document with self attestation is enough, keep additional copies and other original documents separately so that you don't have to struggle finding the one you need when asked for verification.
*For children, print the Annexure H, self attest it (parent).
If you're missing any photocopy, the reception counter folks will tell you but there is no need to panic - there's a photocopier right there and you can get it done quickly at Rs.1.50 a sheet
4.Be alert, watch the token status displays and move fast - In addition to these displays, they also have staff near these displayed shouting out the token number and counter number so please do pay attention. When your chance comes, move fast and don't miss it as it can cause a lot of delay.
