About a month back, I received an SMS stating that my IT refund was miscalculated, and provided a URL to resubmit the details. The URL had an IP address instead of a domain name.
Probably upon seeing no response from me, a similar SMS was sent the next day. This time the URL had another IP address. I did not respond to it either.
It stopped with that.

Many people must have fallen for this scam. I recieved it on whatsapp along with a voice msg. explaining how my number won it amongst other 5000 numbers. A nation wide crackdown is necessary for curbing this menance.

So many spelling mistakes and see the sponsors. Aircel is gone four years back. Vodafone and Idea are one joint entity now. Uninor god knows where they are. SBI Manager has already signed it These days when you see a 100 % Original sticker, then its fake 100%.

Did the voice message had the KBC signature Tune to it?

But, there are people who fall into this and get cheated. If possible share that whatsapp no and the picture to the IT cell of the Regional police. They will become the "luckpati" to this cheaters

I had received fake email telling me to redeem my credit card points of my Kotak Bank Card (I don't have it) and it tells me to got a legit looking website and put my card number, CVV, expiry and all. I usually write BMC curses in these places and submit the form.
Sometimes I feel if I had knowledge, I could make a small code snippet which can go to this URL and fill in all junk information and submit it over and over, like 1000000s of times.

I'd suggest not visiting/clicking the site at all in the first place - any of these *could* have malware and other scripts running in the background that could affect/infect your browser and/or system.

Yes exact same. May be it might be IndusInd bank and I mistakenly mentioned Kotak.

I received the following email today.

"My name is Vander Sergiy . I work as a procurement assistant. I got your contact details in my search for a reliable and neutral company or individual to partner with in the area of investment. I need your assistance to manage an investment fund in a profitable business in your region with a good Annual Return on Investment (AROI). I know that this mail might come to you as a surprise because we neither know each other nor have ever met but please accept it with an open and positive mind.


Details of the investment and funding will be furnished to you when I receive your response which will also facilitate a face to face meeting with the investors.

The strange thing is that I received it on my work mail, which I have not shared very widely.

I received a call the other day from a lady stating that I had missed my premium for life insurance from Punjab National Bank since 2014 and I am due to pay 50k as pending dues. I told her I have not bought any insurance from the PNB bank and hanged up.

Also a few years ago a gentleman called stating he was from my bank and that he was doing a survey and wanted to know what kind of logo I had on my debit card ie a Visa logo or something else. I told that bum if he was from my bank then he would have known already what kind of cards with what kind of logo's are issued by the bank. He promptly hanged up.

Honestly, I think Vander is right, please think with an open mind.

I have received an email myself and, I’m afraid that, I’m in quite a quandary right now. Maybe fellow TeamBHPians can help me decide.

Recently I received an email from Dr Kate Wilson from London and believe me, I’ve always wanted to setup my own brand of multi speciality hospitals.

I have been getting mail from "Reader's Digest" advising me that i have been shortlisted for Rs 15 lacs. They are persistent. Must have received at least 15 mail. So what is this? A scam? If so, why is RD silent about it. Am sure their marketing department must have received info about this scam.

Reader's Digest's sweepstakes are rather notorious - they've been sued / faced regulatory action in multiple countries for this. The playbook is almost always the same - a big number, a sense of urgency, a hint of a guarantee and often targeted at the elderly.

I used to receive several such postal mail a decade back when I had a Reader's Digest subscription. This still continues after so many years?!

I remember finding this in one of the books that my father used to subscribe and excitedly running to him shouting i'm rich i'm rich! Needless to say i got a lesson in life that day

They moved (apparently with great success) from snail mail to digital. This migration was studied closely by academics and industry observers, as a matter of fact.
