Update
The suspect was identified as a nonfunctional speedometer/odometer sensor. I replaced the sensor and fuse (Rs. 1600 approx). Everything works fine now.

Are you sure that the speed sensor was the issue? I have a similar vintage Maruti and besides the check engine light, everything else was fine in similar circumstances.

Stranger things have happened, but how can a speedometer sensor cause this? Now the fuse might have something to do with the engine stalling.

Re: "My Car Won't Start" | What To Do

My i10 1.1L (2008 model) won't start today morning.

I was in a hurry to reach office, so didn't spend any time trying to investigate the problem. Left the car at home and took Yulu Miracle to office.

When I turned the key to ON position, the power windows, dashboard lights and music system lights were working. On turning the key to START position, these lights would go off as usual, but I could not hear the cranking.

1. The car was working fine till last Friday. It always used to start in one short crank.

2. The battery is almost 5 years old (Amaron maintenance free battery, purchased from HASS).

3. My daily usage is less than 10 kms, since my office is located 3-4 kms from my home.

4. I am pretty sure that I haven't left the headlights on overnight.

5. The car was given for a routine service 1 week back (at an independent Hyundai specialist garage). But, I have driven the car for 5 days after that.

6. On Friday evening, I heard some intermittent krrrr krrrr sound coming from somewhere under the steering. (I have never heard this sound earlier)

Please advice how to proceed. Could the battery have died suddenly ? Or could it be just a blown fuse ?

Thanks in advance.

You need a new battery. The krr sound is the sound that the starter motor makes when there is not enough power to crank the engine. Just call Amaron and get a new battery.

Looks to be a battery issue.

I meant that the krrr sound was coming in the car even in the moving condition (even after starting) - like something was loose under the dashboard.

It is likely to be your battery or your starter motor./relaisThe quick way to check a battery is to turn on the ignition and to turn on the lights on high beam. Stand in front of the car, does it look all right or way to dim? If the latter it is most likely the battery. Even if it looks ok it would not hurt to get the battery checked properly.

If it is the starter motor or relays, sometimes a gentle tap on it might get it going. But it will need seeing to, because it will only be going downhill, once it stops engaging occasionally.
Good luck

I called the Hyundai Roadside Assistance and while I was waiting for them, tried some of the above steps.

The headlights (high and low beam) were working properly. So the battery, even though is 5 years old, doesn't seem to be the culprit. This was further confirmed by checking the battery voltage with multi-meter. The reading was higher than 12V.

The Hyundai person then investigated - he checked all the relevant fuses, none was blown. He then took a long wire and did something inside the engine compartment and the car started (even without turning the key).

The car was then driven to Hyundai service centre for further investigation. I am awaiting an update from them. It appeared like a connectivity problem.

Can someone advice what could be the problem and what kind of expenditure I am looking at.

It's either the ignition switch or the solenoid switch on the starter motor. Solenoid switch might have a higher probability and should cost less. If the ignition switch itself has gone bad, then the expenses could be more since you will need to change the key as well. If you turn out very lucky, it could just be a lose connection.

Saket

I had got my car serviced 1 week back at an independent garage. Could there be some foulplay involved ?

I am still awaiting the diagnosis report from the HASS.

Shouldn't be. There are a lot more money making tricks than failing a starter motor. That said, let's wait for the final diagnosis from HASS.

The car was diagnosed and fixed yesterday at HASS.

It was a blown relay (power relay).

Total damage was Rs 1700, including Road side assistance charges, diagnostic charges and relay replacement.

The bill shows Road side assistance charges (greater than 100km), whereas my house is less than 10kms from the HASS. Was I overbilled ? Do they have different slabs based on kms ?

Glad it is fixed. What do you mean with power relay? On many modern car there is a relay that need to activate to provide power to the ECU and various other sensors. When you turn the ignition, among other things, this relay gets powered and closes. If this relay does not work, the car wont start. Depending on make you might still be able to crank the engine, but it wont fire.

It is just an ordinary relay, usually found amongst the many other relays on moder cars.

This is the relay which was replaced.

In Hyundai terminology, it is called power relay. Not sure about the functionality.
