Well buy the compressor which was originally fitted. For example if your car has Behr, go for Behr. changing compressor to a different brand means a whole lot of headache in terms of plumbing, cooling system etc., etc.,

its like this periodic fluctuation which stops, after driving for a bit.

another thing is that the fuel level drops to zero on its own..randomly,n slowly comes back up.cant figure out what the issue is,gotta go get it checked..any leads??

the third issue is while takin a slow left turn, the car jerks..with weird noises comin from the front left side. The mechanic said its a axle hub issue when he just heard me describe it..is he right?

well, with these issues to be addressed, gave the car for service. My mech said the revs dropping is cause of a choke in the injectors and would get it cleaned.
Picked up the car after the service, only to find it a LOT worse than before.the axle hub apparently dint need replacement..just oiling he said.although the noise while turning left has reduced..but its still there.

the revs now dont drop just during idling, but throughout the powerband..very irritating..feels lyk a bullockcart. He said that because the injectors were cleaned, they'd misfire or something of that sort temporarily..but its been quite a few days n not much improvement..still jerks through the powerband.
what are the possible reasons for the engine behaving like that and the left axle noise?

Hi everyone

My Indica DLS 2004 has been leaking power steering oil since the last few months. I had to top it up every 10-15 days.

The local mechanic told me the oil seal on the right rack and pinion is leaking. And if i want original parts i would have to change the entire power steering (16-17k). He suggests a 'kit' from Delhi which would cost me 3K.

Can anybody help mo on this one ?? Tanveer, what do u suggest ?

Hmmm, never faced this thing. Can you try out another mechanic and see if he says the same thing.
Did he remove the power steering before coming to this conclusion.

No answers from indi* owners yet - so will try my hand, on basis of my experience with diesel engines.

Injectors are equivalent of spart plugs in a petrol engine. I will never "clean" them. It is always better to replace them. Also, when problem is with fuel injection systems (pumps, injectors, etc), you may be better off taking the vehicle first to specialised diesel fuel injection (FI) shops. Two FI systems in vouge in India AFAICT are MICO and CAV. Depending on whose FI your car uses, take the vehicle to the shop. Look up the yellow pages for such shops in your area.

A "kit" in the Indian mechanics' jargon is a set of parts, spares, consumables and gaskets which will be required when a sub assembly, like fuel injection pump, water pump, etc. is opened. Clarify what are components of this "kit" first - like whether this contains any tubes, bearings, etc. You can also talk to any spares dealer to get an idea of what the mechanic is talking about.

A typical seal alone can cost around 100 (usually less).

A seal leak can occur due to the seal wearing out. I see no reason to replace the entire P/S assembly for a seal problem. Like already posted, get a second opinion, and in case you go along wih the same mechanic, talk to a spares dealer first before proceeding with this.

I think the thread title is a bit unfair. How about Tata Indica-List of solutions ?
Just a suggestion

BaCkSeAtDrIVeR, injectors are much more expensive than spark plugs. It is not always the best solution to replace them. Often they can be cleaned and pressure tested. If opening pressure and spray pattern are found to be OK, they are invariably re-used.

I have noticed that my 2004 Indica has been consuming too much clloan of late. I topped it approx 2k Km bac and now it iis again close to the minimum level. I hve two questions:

1) what could be reason for the increased coolant consumption.

2) Is it ok to top up with water in case you are not able to get coolant.

There is a small leak. Most likely place is where the coolant return pipe connects to the coolant tank because if it was somewhere else you will find coolant on the floor.
This problem comes in Indica sometimes.

It turned out to be a simple leak in the pipe connecting the pump to the reservoir. Found another mechanic and got it dont.

Also had another problem with some kind of rumbling noise in the front, TASC gave me an estimate of 2000-3000. Turned out to be a problem with the tie-rods. Got both problems repaired for 1.5 K . The car is perfect now (fingers-crossed).
