Re: 1st-gen Hyundai i20 (2008 - 2014) : Review

Hello,

A friend has recently picked up a 2013 i20 Asta Petrol. Normally in Hyundai’s the chassis number is available under the driver seat as far as I know but in this case the carpet is stitched and there is no opening to take a chassis number print. Can any of the owners guide me to an alternative location of the chassis number or any other way to remove the carpet to trace the number? Thank you.

In My 2011 model i20 Asta, I see another location. Near the Front passenger door. Engine, VIN etc are stuck there also in a black sticker.

Thanks. We found it under the Driver seat only but unfortunately we had to cut a part of the carpet to get the tracing. As far as I have seen in i10's the chassis number part is always cut from the carpet. Surprised to see it hidden in the i20 facelift.

Hi guys, I have a 2014 i-gen I20 (Petrol). The car has just completed 60K and is running on CNG. A couple of days back the airbag malfunction light came on. Since then it has been on. Has anybody else had this problem? What could be the issue?

Please get the car scanned, Mostly it should be the Airbag Clockspring which is in the steering assembly. It's a common problem with the pre-elite i20's.

Thanks for the info. How much potential damage to my wallet I'm looking at here, if this is the culprit? In few cases, I've heard hyundai suggesting of changing the entire airbag module which could be quite costly.

If it's the airbag clock spring then the cost will be definitely less than 5k. I don't remember the exact price must be around 2-3k + labour + cost of scanning. Please get this checked from a competent FNG. Ask an automotive electrician to check the wiring after the scanning before the replacement.

Costs around 1800, got it done last year at an authorized service centre.

You don't need to change the airbag module and it takes an hour, get it done asap.

If you're using aftermarket horns like me that's probably the reason for the light to come up at the first place.

Hi jag, thanks for the reply. So was any part changed or was it simply an error corrected by running through a scanner? Also I don't have any after market part installed except for a CNG kit. Could that be a culprit?

The CNG kit has got nothing to do with the clock spring issue. It's a normal issue with Hyundai's of that era, I have seen it on a 2014 & 2010 i20 Asta Petrol's which was completely stock. It is just an issue like the steering rack going bust of the older i10's.

If issue is related to Airbag clock spring, shouldn't it be covered under Takata recall OR does Hyundai uses non-Takata Airbag module?

The takata recall as far as I know focuses on the airbag inflator and not the clock spring. Iirc Hyundai doesn't use takata airbags.

Sorry for omitting the fact that they changed the clockspring. They'll scan it for free, you can try asking them to clear the codes but it would appear again as soon as you start driving. No harm in asking though !

Well, I don't know if its common for i20's to have that issue but horn's especially Redgrills (Personal Favourite) when installed without additional relay and thicker wiring tend to cause that issue. Got them installed a month ago in my XUV and sure enough the light lit up and had to get the clockspring replaced on it as well.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It was indeed a faulty clock-spring which caused the airbag light to come on. The total cost of replacement was around 2k (1300 for the part + 700 for labour and taxes). Car is now back to normal. I'll be uploading my 60K service bill soon.

Re: 1st-gen Hyundai i20 (2008 - 2014) : Review

Hi all,

The low end torque of the i20 1.2L Petrol is really sluggish in the summer (or in my case - nearly all the time since I live in Bombay ).

I'm planning to change the air filter from stock to a proper conical CAI on my 2013 1.2L i20 Asta (O) petrol.

My only question with the setup is the likely increase in engine noise/vibrations. I have gotten too used to the refined and quiet petrol engine so I really wanna keep it that way. Any suggestions?

My stock i20 came without under-hood damping / hood-liner. Will installing that help keep the db low?

Moderator: I was unable to find a specific thread for the i20 Petrol hence asked here, but please feel free to move it to another thread if needed.
