re: Classic Cars available for purchase

These are really nice cars. I've got a very similar one, albeit slightly younger. My W123 is from 1982. It too has the 2.0 l petrol engine, although this engine is a previous model. 2.0 L is ok for, but don't expect any rocket type of performance.

Even the petrol engines have been known to clock impressive mileage without any major problems or overhaul, up to 200-300 thousand kilometers.

These W123 are considered by many as the best quality Mercedes ever. It is the last Mercedes that was more or less completely designed in house. It is extremely well put together, it is a mechanic's dream to work on. You can see that the engineers actually thought through how to take parts and bits of and having to put them back on as well.

Just about all parts are still available through Mercedes and or aftermarket suppliers.

The biggest problem with this car is, as with many classics, rust. There are many weak spots where water gathers leaving the chassis to rot. Check the jacking points, the sills and the engine bay nears the hinges of the hood. Both front and rear window are prone to leakage and that means you could have some serious rust underneath. On the upside, all of this is easily repairable on this car.

Nice car to have, nice car to drive, very easy to maintain.

Enjoy!

Jeroen

With stupid impractical RTO rules in this country, we have no choice, but to buy some valid paper & drive the car.Only solution. Most old cars have this problem.

Ananth sir,
Sorry to disagree, the MV rules( there are no rules called RTO rules) may not suit many who want to misuse them for commercial gains. That does not mean the rules per se are ''stupid''. They may pose some ''practical'' difficulties for some vested business interests so they can be called ''impractical''. How can you say with conviction that ""Most'' old cars have this problem.? One can at best state ''many old'' cars have this problem.
to the best of my info this problem is faced mostly by people who have sourced cars at scrap prices from old garages/junkyards and have no proper documentation.

Agree with ajay99 here - MV rules are not the real culprits here.

If the registration expired long back and you are still the registered owner as per the records, you can pay the tax dues (for the entire period and with penalty of course), have the vehicle re-assessed for fitness and get the registration renewed. I think this is still possible.

If the registration records indicate the owner as someone else, it just means one of the previous owners didn't follow the proper procedure while they purchased the car and I don't think the rules should be blamed for someone's reluctance to follow the same. Again, if the owner as per the records is willing to clean up the mess and get the vehicle re-registered and transferred to the new buyer, it can be theoretically legalized. However, would people (especially non-enthusiasts) really want to go through all the trouble? Unlikely!

For the shady imports with no documents, they were never supposed to be here in the first place and the MV rules should not be blamed for the inability to legalize the same.

Also, from what I understand, some of these rules are made over-inconvenient for a reason- to ensure that stolen vehicles cannot be easily re-used as it is.
