A Bengali friend living in the U.S. and a flat in Calcutta asked me to find a late model Mercedes for him to have when he visits.

I saw a nice one owner 1972 220 gas model, manual trans with 75,000 miles on it and the a/c needs to be rebuilt. Body needs some minor work, the paint & chrome are good, the interior excellent. Asking price is 1.5 lak.

He's interested, but not knowing it's +/- asked me to check it out carefully.

Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

John this 115 looks pretty clean. It has obviously had a good history, and examples like these are hard to find. Everything seems to be in place, price seems ok, even the MB Tex interior seems ok. Just get someone to have a courtesary look at the mechanicals and seal the deal. I wouldn't think it would be on the market too long.

Machdar the bangie car is diesel which always fetches a premuim over the petrols. But yes the car seems pretty intact. John take a local MB mechanic and quote a price after deducting costs to to bring her to shipshape AC etc. I can see she needs a little tinwork/ some spots seems bubbled/rusting. he seems to be parked at a reputed restorers place

Nice bodyline, so tinwork will be a breeze. Interiors look good. Start the car and check teh oil pressure, drive her and she should be silent, i.e. no tappet noise etc. The steering seems to be from a newer version. Should have had the bakelite one i think or else the car might be a end to 1974.

Price is good but one has to bargain and see if one can get a few nicks off. Go for 1.15-1.25K. That should be a steal.

Mach yes they are horns from the period or 80's may be german/italian or replica's If papers are intact transfer should reasonable these old cars hardly cost 10 to 20K. Tat w123 sure looks hot in the white wall tires that combo looked before the advent of mass scale alloys available to retail - now a nice set of 15 or 16's. Why is it that one sees mostly 240/200d's in intact condition I suppose 300's changed too many hands therefore few left in good condition. Machdar she looks nice try locating her but be ware 200's are good work horses but not very powerfull

Hi Canon,

Saw a 240D yesterday. Not very original they have done power windows, sony music system, interiors and some other small stuff. Guy wanted 2.4 and I didn't feel it was worth it so let it pass. I will continue to hunt for a good 115, 110 or any other 50-70 merc.
