In early 1980s, Mr. Sing had give this car for the use of his spiritual guru, Sathya Sai Baba (I am not talking about the more latter model car which is now in Delhi)

Hi Harit,

Is this a trick question to pep up the thread.

As per my reckoning it definaitely is not Kerala. My guess is that its somewhere in Kenya. Though the faces look familiar - any connection with Jayant (Shah) or Sekhar (Mehta) ?

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Ram

You bet a trick question. Thread got slightly pepped
It is Kenya indeed.
But I did not know that these guys could be Jayant Shah and / or Shekhar Mehta. Can you confirm?

Here is a pic, what could have been the first letter on the number plate? I don't know, its not a trick question as I have no other photo. GCY? or are there other possibilities.

Cheers harit

Nice, so the Hotel Greens existed at least till 1962.
These are Bedford trucks made by Hindustan Motors, not Dodge - Fargo.

I would say again not in India, and no preceding letter to CY.

From the image I dont see any letter before CY. Maybe you have a better look.

GCY could work for Gujarat, but that would be maybe 70s, and the picture looks much older. The style of plate also does not look very Indian or it is very old Indian.

What car is that though?

What is today Gujarat was the erstwhile Bombay State/Bombay Presidency. Cars of the 30s and 40s would probably have been BYx regd (BYA, BYB, BYC). Formation of Gujarat State in 1960 (?) saw introduction of GJx registrations.

Of course, there were plenty odd ball plates seen earlier too - often after the city (Navsari, Jam [for Jamnagar], SSV for Saurashtra etc)

This could be a Srilankan picture too, here is one pic of another srilankan vehicle.

Quote:
In 1940, someone had he odd idea of creating a Sinhalese registration series which used the letters of the name of Ceylon as a component of the tag. Thus CE, CY, CL, CO(not issued ) and CN were succeeded by to EY, EL, and EN. The idea was then abandoned before YL began, and in 1956 the first ‘sri‘ symbol plates were launched.
