Your paternal grandfather's Dodge brought back happy memories of the countless trips together to Mahableshwar in it.


I remember the day the odometer touched one lakh miles as we were approaching Mahad, on our way to Mahableshwar.


We all stopped, had a picnic to celeberate this milestone, and then effortlessly continued to Poladpur and up the ghat.



This Dodge was your grandfather's daily drive to his office on Apollo street,till one sad evening when he was hit on the rear opposite Lion's Gate resulting in the chassis getting bent.


The insurance company refused to allow it to be repaired, called it a total loss vehicle, paid Rs 5ooo, and scrapped the car.


Thereafter, if memory serves me right, he bought a Fiat, and later on an ambassador, Mark 2, MRZ 5783.


Your paternal grandmother would be able to share some wonderful stories about the Dodge. Get her to talk and make notes, especially her picnic box filled with raw carrots, capsicums etc which we were made to eat on our trips out of Bombay.

I used to see this car as a daily driver on Altamont Road in the 1970's. Then she was hit by a bus, chassis bent and sold off. Bought by a bootlegger who misused her and eventually the car caught fire. And was lost for ever.

By chance I was looking at some insurance claim related photos. Normally the insurance guy used to go to the workshop where the banged up cars were lying for a survey and they also took photographs. See what is lying in the background, a VW Splitty, and maybe a Buick?

With due respect for Harit and his research, the Dodge was never SOLD OFF to a bootlegger.

It is to my knowledge that the car was taken over by the insurance company and registration cancelled, before being scrapped.


Rehan's grandfather was a relative who was very close to our family and all correspondence with the insurance company, starting from lodging of the claim for repair to it being rejected and declared a total loss vehicle , was done from my office.

My first contribution to this thread.

Picture of my father with his motorcycle circa 1976-77. This was geared vehicle and had three gears. It came with pedals and also had a knob which could be pulled out enabling pedaling just in case vehicle runs out of fuel or malfunctions.

He had told me that it was called as Italian Autocycle and was of 1950s vintage. But my guess is that it could be one of the Lambretta Innocentis that were available in India during that time.

It was predecessor to the Laxmi brand of autocycles prevalent in Maharashtra during 80s and 90s.

Few days back someone sent me a video of some bollywood awards function of probably 60's or 70's. I think the bollywood word was not even coined in those days. In few scenes, actors & actresses are seen arriving in cars but since its B&W, this is one of the best screenshot that I could manage. Some cars are dark colored & hence blend in the night sky.
