Wireless Printing for SCX 3201

Hi,

I am thinking converting the USB printer to BT Printer.
I have sketched some idea in mind to convert into BT Wireless printer.

Here is the picture of the setup. Will this setup work? or Will the Bluetooth dongle be able to receive the signal sent from the Laptop BT? Is there any suggestion where i can convert the printer to BT.

IMO the BT dongle you are referring to is for use in a PC/Laptop where bluetooth capability is not inbuilt. Moreover, printer will need some driver support for processing print command, which is either pc/laptop dependent or network dependent.

Cheers

This Set-up wont work, as the BT Dongle is used to convert the USB to BT and requires drivers to be installed, Which you cant directly on a Printer, hence you would require BT Print Server which will help process the command sent from your BT enabled PDA or Laptop.

Even better, if your Laptop is WiFi enabled, you can use a Dlink Print server which will convert your USB printer to a WIFI enabled Printer.

Oh great!; Print Server can solve wireless issue.

Any idea about the pricing of Print servers (BT & Wifi)? do they require additional power supply?

I've got a print server but... it is wired, not wifi and worse, the interface to the printer is parallel printer socket. Guess I'll just keep it filed away under antiques.

re: Suggestions for printers

D-link is the safest best. They have all types of Print servers.
If I remember right the model is DBT-320, they also have wireless Print servers for both Parallel and USB.

Its actually functional on older printers aswell. Say you have a Parallel Printer, you can use a Parallel to USB converter found easily in IT stores and connect it with a USD Print server (Wifi / BT)

I am not aware of the current prices in the market.

Thanks... I have to replace my old printer, anyway. Just a shame to know that I could have been using that old print server!

The HP 1020 is a dream printer. Been using a loaner from a friend. Thoroughly satisfied. Also it has option for back to back printing via its software. So printing pdf books is much easier

@Gurudatta
Can you once again confirm the price of the Samsung SCX3201? Today morning I saw the newspaper and it had an advertisement for the Samsung SCX3201 for Rs. 8999/- with a full toner.

Have they increased the prices or you bought without a toner? :S

re: Suggestions for printers

Guys,

I'm planning to get myself a printer. My requirements are:

(1) Print about 1000 to 1500 pages per month
(2) Should be cost effective (in terms of cartridge usage)
(3) More importantly it should support Ubuntu 10.10 out of the box
(4) It will be an all in one (printer / fax / scanner)
(5) Not willing to shell out more than 100 Euros

I have narrowed down on the HP Office Jet 4500 wireless and the HP Office Jet 6500 eAll-in-one (unfortunately no wireless option). So looking for suggestions from you guys to help me decide my buy.

Re: Inkjet vs Laser

joe, I'm trying to move away from inkjet printing, due to running-cost and maintenance issues, and all this ridiculous stuff like can't print a page of pure black type because your pale-pink cartridge is empty. But, if you must have colour, then the alternatives are just too expensive.

In turn, I have to thank you for making me rethink my buying plans!

The serious question was, how much do we need colour printing? The answer (from both wife and self) is, It's nice, even for forms and stuff, but we almost never print photos, so really, we don't need it at all.

Right... that makes a laser multi-function affordable. Currently thinking of the Samsung SCX-4623FN, as I do want network connectivity.

One thing I haven't found, so far, in a bw laser mfp is auto duplex. This (although it hasn't worked for the past year) was my favourite feature on my Canon Pixma. Quite apart from the serious business of cutting paper use and making documents look professional, it also takes care of saving the paper wastage on so many web pages. Why do designers make then a line or three longer than a page? Couldn't the designer of, say, a airline boarding pass begin with the requirement that it should fit one page, either Letter or A4?

re: Suggestions for printers

Hi,

Planning to get a laserjet for home use(avg of 20 prints per week).

Which among Canon/HP/Samsung us a better one.

Canon comes with a full sized toner, HP and Samsung has half sized toner.

Dealer suggests Canon 2900B INR 5650 , HP for INR 4800.

Pls suggest.

Thanks
