Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

friends,

Seriously thinking about the MM Legend Spec without TC . First time going for this kind of modification so what are the things I should check, follow while changing the Engine ? is that MDI3200 (From Marshal)is a direct fit to NGT520 ? How can I alter the Engine Mount on Chassis without disturbing the character of Chassis Metal ? or its a direct fit to NGCS XD3P engine Mount ?

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

whoa - radical mods already? no engine mount can be fabricated (at a local garage) without heating up the chassis and arc welding it. I dont think guys use MIG/TIG yet for engine mounts (local garages). If you in it, I researched a lot about scorpio (100+Bhp) non-ECU engine and gave up for want of a Lakh Rs. Do you want to go down that road? Will yield superb results?

If you are going down this path, given a lot of small things crop up, I'd not look at an engine that only takes you from 15 kgm to 18 kgm. Look for a Scorpio 2.6 pre-Crde or say the 14B . As they say..."If you are gonna get wet, you might as well go swimming".
At the same time, as many people will advise, keeping it stock ain't a bad idea either.

Cheers,
Adi

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

Sachin has undergone 4 engine changes in his MM550, including MDI3200 with and without TC. He can answer any question on this mod.

Koya, which model engine is that - BS-I or BS-II ? Marshal BS-II had a basic ECU for the EGR, only a few models were made. Please tell me the engine no. or the fuel injection pump number, I will then tell you if it is ok or not.

Do not do anything on the chassis for God's sake.

Spike

Adi,
You are confusing me . 14B won't work for me because Jeep is my daily drive. That Scorpio 2.6 is my first choice but costly .

Pratheesh,

That Engine is from a 2000 Model Marshal Without ECU & EGR . No engine,FP Number, the Current owner changed the FP to MM LoadKing Mico-Bosch Pump.
Now Waiting for your Signal.

BTW, what happened to your heating problem? Didn't you have a busted head gasket?

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse-me.jpg

Still thinking What to do

After few hours of BOTR I found radiator is pumping water and Temperature goes to red line. I got the same situation in My old 550 at Kakkbe OTR So I know the Gasket is the problem. Immediately after sometime I noticed The Oil Pressure down to red mark. I am happy with two meters showing left and right red Line, Somehow I managed to complete the OTR without more damage and reached home safely.

I too got a Hit on the left front shackle, which resulted Bending Main leaf, That Silencer Muffler got another bad hit (Need to reroute it like 550XD), lost two Breaklights,Black out lights.

Fixing cost - Mechanical - 500'
parts - 270
Electrical - 450

Now the Jeep went for another coat of full painting. (Never do good painting on a off road Jeep)

Plan :-

1. Fix the NGT520 in First place, I am tried all the Jeep ways to do a downshift but Bad luck I need a Gear box Overhaul , Hope Only the synchronizers & Locks need to be replaced.

2. Change the Head gasket for now and fix the oil pressure in a cost effective way If possible,

3. Do the registration.

4. Fine tune the suspension for Max Articulation, Move to 5.38 Diff ratio for torque and Keep waiting for a Better deal for 2.6 Scorpio Turbo Engine.

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse-mechanic-inspecting.jpg

Finally took the Jeep to my trusted Mechanic to inspect the Engine,GB,Steering Assy. He took the test drive and told we have to repeat whole the Work what we done to the OLD jeep to make it a performer . Told him to open the head and change the gasket, make it to running condition and Decide to do a complete GB Overhaul.

Last time I spend around 40-45k for rebuilding the XD3P but after 6-7 months of Drive I burned the gasket again & that fuel pump Hates water So thought this time no Engine rebuild on a XD3P (My NGCS XD3P is with EGR & small ECU) and on an XD3P there is a maximum that we can play around on Power delivery and there is no guarantee on 80 degree temp. As I have a strong Chassis why not an Engine swap ? But which engine ?

Options I shortlisted.

1 . Scorpio 2.6 Turbo Plus
- Costly so dropped it for now.

2 . MDI3200 / TC
- High price tag to the out put (40 - 65K)

3 . Nissan BD30
- A 3L engine and costs around 30-35 Do I need that ? NO

4 . Toyota 14B
- Again a 3L No No. (20-25K)

5 . Nissan SD25
- Cheap, almost same as XD3P with option to work around, Bullet prof reliability and good feedback on those who are using it. I found this can solve my current situation for min 1-2 years, after that I can change to better Engine/GB.

Finally decided to Buy a SD25 (15-20k) do a Engine rebuild and Sell the XD3P. Today Morning I went to the Scrap market and found this good looking SD25.

Is it a Oil Cooler ?

MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse-sd254.jpg

What is this part with a valve like mechanism ?

what is the easy way to mate it with NGT520 ? use an adaptor plate or modify the bell housing ?

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

Sreejesh, sorry I have not replied to your message! However I have been trying to get the info you needed. It is quite tough to get an XD2 engine nowadays.
Turbocharging your XD3P will work but you will have to keep boost really low, to avoid blowing your engine.
The SD25 is a good bet and may be your best option.
The last picture shows the butterfly valve in the inlet. Basically this cuts the air feed to the engine on releasing the accelerator. This provides a kind of engine braking.
Yup, that is an oil cooler.

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

Hi sreejesh.
Why not make the suspension softer and check for articulation

Why not nissan bd30 and toyota 14b?
14b is 3.7L

Sd25 parts are not cheap.

The intake manifold has a venturi/butterfly like the petrol engines.
The pump has a pneumatic governor which works with the venturi.

Dont mate a small engine with a big gearbox. The bigger gear box will eat up power.

Go for a 3L engine.

For sd25 use a isuzu 4sped gear box with 4,88 diffs.

Please keep engine rebuild and spares cost before deciding.

some options i would think of which are worth it.

Scorpio engine + ba10 or NGT
BD30+Ba10
Isuzu 4jg2 turbo + isuzu 5 speed (95k in delhi for engine and gb)
Dcm toyota +kmt 90 or isuzu tropper heavy duty 5 speed

Or cheap and best and the most hated combo

Perkins p4 + kmt 90

Re: MM550 XD NGCS - The War Horse

Thank you jyobeb, Sandeep,

The final Combination will be Scorpio engine + NGT530. But right now I am out off budget for bigger and better Engine GB options So thought about the SD25. As I mentioned earlier I don't want to waste any more money on XD3P especially the one with EGR.

Can you please share more details of SD25 like normal temperature ,max rpm etc ? I can't go for a 3+L engine as jeep is my daily drive. What about a turbo on SD25 ? anybody tried that ?
