Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

Upgraded the bulbs from stock halogen to 4200k Warm White 75Wx2 LED today. Big difference in the lighting from the head-lamps. This pic is just to show a sampler - right side in pic is halogen. No changes to wiring. Even the rubber boot was put back, though with a slight modification. We checked for the throw, and the spread is well contained to the road in front, and not all over the place.

Worth the money spent. And thanks to @Varun560061.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

I'm experiencing a charging issue with my Gypsy (BS3 - 2008). The alternator output at the battery terminals when the car is idling is around 15.5 volts, which is quite high. Consequently, the battery warning light and check engine light come on. However, when I slightly press the accelerator pedal, the warning lights go off

I observed this unusually high alternator output voltage last year as well, but it spontaneously resolved and dropped to the usual 14 volts range. Now, it seems to have reoccurred

I'm curious to know if Gypsy King alternators have an in-built voltage regulator or if the ECU handles voltage regulation.

Additionally, does anyone have suggestions for a good electrician in Bangalore who specializes in Gypsies?

This points to an issue with the regulator circuit which is inbuilt into the alternator. It is supposed to regulate the output to around 13.6-13.8 Volts at different loads. A greater than 15V output is undesirable as your battery is getting overcharged. This manifests as lighting up of the Battery Indication since the indication bulbs is connected in such a way that it lights up based on the voltage difference between alternator output and a reference.
You have 03 choices;-
(1) Replace just the regulator circuit (Most prob you have a lucas unit in your BS3). A new one on BOODMO cost around 2K, cheaper alternatives are available for Rs 800 to 1000. Alternators are common for Zen, Esteem & Gypsy.
(2) Buy a second hand alternator of any of the above cars.
(3) Upgrade to a 80A alternator of SX4 (its available easily at least in Delhi). It is a direct mechanical fit (same bolt holes and pulley) and only the connector for reference supplies needs to be changed. This option is recommended especially if you have AC in your Gypsy and need the extra juice.

Thank you for your suggestions.
Good to know that the ECU is not regulating the voltage.

I found an alternator in BOODMO priced at Rs.6600 (rated at 50A )and the compatible cars list shows Gypsy King BS3 as well.
https://boodmo.com/catalog/part-generator_assy-4469613/

If the one offered in BOODMO is the correct alternator , I will probably go for this option.

Why dont you go visit Puneeth of Essaarr Automotive on JC Road? He will be able to help you get the OEM Maruti Part. You can whatsapp him for help on 77953 64944.

It is the correct alternator of Denso Make and yours is most probably a Lucas.
The reason I did not give this option is because 90% of your alternator is actually healthy, and spending 6k plus on replacement seems a little excessive. Alternative is a Rs 1K spend on a new regulator. BOODMO also has the regulator listed separately https://boodmo.com/catalog/part-alte...ulator-317598/
(though image is representative). Puneet at ESSARR (ph 7795364944) may have the same available in stock and any roadside electrician will be able to change it.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

Dear fellow BHPians,
My gypsy gave me advance new year wishes today with a failed water pump. Was able to drive it to my mechanic safely. After 5 hours of work we found that the water pump had completely wasted inside. The mechanic said he'd never seen anything like it in all the Gypsies he has worked on.

Has anyone else faced this issue?

The Gypsy is a simple vehicle and needs only routine servicing unless some part has given up and needs changing.

Nowadays I go there because mine is bone-stock and I want all the service history recorded. So I sit through the oil and fluid changes and cleaning and pay and take it away. The next one is due in March 2023.

If you’re looking for gypsy specialist service and modifications and all then there is RAC Garage in Koramangala who are superb gypsy specialists. You may find them a bit expensive though, over time.

There is Sri Raksha service in Sarjapur Road next to Kaikondrahalli lake, Iblur area. They know their stuff. But getting undivided proper attention from them is difficult.
Thanks @shankarbalan, they are in the process of shifting to silk board. :(

Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

Hello Friends

Please suggest good workshop or mechanic for Gypsy running repairs/scheduled maintenance in and around Chandigarh. Also looking for an auto electrician to carry out some modifications.

Thanks in advance

Good input. If they are going to Silk Board area then they are probably moving to their earlier additional facility in which they used to have a multi brand workshop. I wish to take my Gypsy for the annual service (oil change and filters etc) and a general check up - will cross check with them and probably do this end of this month or early March 2024.

I ve always found Green Cars to be a decent bunch of guys. I just prefer to stand there and get the vehicle serviced and they generally allow me to do so.

The good thing is, the Gypsy is a pretty basic vehicle and doesn’t have all these modern complications and complexities.

Absolutely! And simplicity is a virtue!! Modern cars are getting quite complex with the electronics. I recently drove an Innova hybrid which had the parking brake (hand brake) as a button! Gypsy still has the mechanical version which seemed more reliable.
