Thank you so much! I'm buying this PC to primarily play racing sim games such as Gran Turismo 4, Gran Turismo 6, Forza Series, and Ride 3.
I was just concerned about the GPU bottle-necking the CPU.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Hi everyone,
I am looking to set up a 4 monitor output desktop. Any suggestions?
Is i5 gen 8 with 16GB ram and 1TB SSD ok? What about the GPU? Will mostly be for trading setups, nothing heavy duty.
Thanks in advance.

i5 gen 8 does not support 4 displays on its own. You do need a GPU for that. It can support up to 3 displays. Typical config would be DP + HDMI + USB-C

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us...-4-30-ghz.html

(Look for "# of Displays Supported" in specs)

Two options :
  1. Buy a GPU that supports 4 monitors . E.g.: https://www.amazon.in/ASUS-GeForce-G...dp/B08DS13LLZ/
  2. Run 2 displays with on-board GPU and 2 with additional GPU . Most GPUs will do that.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Slightly different topic.

Windows 11 is around the corner and I read that existing Windows 10 users will be upgraded to Windows 11. Will this upgrade be optional and can I choose not to upgrade at all?

You can even choose not to use Windows at all!

Not an option. Have too much dependency on Windows

Actually, it’s the other way around. It’s difficult to upgrade to win 11. It requires Secure boot and latest CPU etc. Mine is a 5yr old laptop with core i5 and 12GB RAM and 2GB graphics but it’s not supported.

The majority of the users will be stuck with Win 10 only unless Microsoft relax the requirements.

Secure Boot is there since the days of Windows 8 (i.e. 9 years ago, pretty ancient for most modern computers to not have it); the greater deal-breaker can be the newer CPU requirements, specifically, the ones with TPM 2.0 support.

However, it is possible to install Windows 11 builds on unsupported physical hardware too, by tweaking the uncompressed installer ISO archive. There are videos on Youtube like .

Warning: If you do this on your main disk partition, make sure to also have a ISO image of Windows 10 on a USB stick which you can install back if something goes wrong.

It is possible to also roll back to Windows 10 if it was upgraded involuntarily, as long as it is done within 10 days of the upgrade.

IMO there is no actual need to upgrade to Windows 11 until either Microsoft relaxes the new hardware requirements, or maybe a few months before the support for 10 ends (which will be in 2025).

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Win 11 is still not ready for prime time as of now. It looks good, fresh, and the whites look even more pure but that is so far accompanied by BSOD, critical stops, and performance hit on some AMD systems for some tasks (not all). This is on newer 2019-21 CPUs etc. For older say Intel 6th/7th gen CPU, simply forget it. I tried clean format on my i7-6700HQ laptop and BSODs were like 1 every 5 mins. Maybe the new 22000.282 build has addressed some issues but so far we dont know. Maybe they will address those issues. In my experience, all windows from 7 to 10 were quite stable for me right from development/beta channel to RTM and onward. In fact, I am an early adopter with no issues in using pre RTM or dev builds. Not so with 11.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

I have been using Windows 11 since Oct 5 have not had any bsods. There is performance hit on AMDs but it's only noticeable at cpu intensive loads I think. AMD already put chipset drivers out yesterday and another fix is also coming.

Although I feel 11 is just 10 with a new skin/theme.

Optional, and the support will end by 2025.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

I've been using Win 11 beta from end of July or early August and I have not faced any issues so far. I do run a VM inside it and that hasn't seen any issue either.

P.S.: I'm running on a i7 11700k which is overclocked to 4.6GHz using XTU.

Most performance issues seem to be on Ryzen platforms (Zen+ onwards, which have TPM2 support). The optimizations with Team Red are still WIP.

Yes, and 10 is over-skinned version of 7. Sad state of affairs.
Thankfully I migrated onto Linux after the launch of Win 10 for majority of my CPU and GPU intensive professional taksts. I open Windows only for using some Windows specific apps or gaming.
