You wouldn't want to miss out on the best time in a decade to build a custom PC. (availability willing)

Part selection is by far the most important part of building a new system. This depends heavily on what this computer is for/what you plan on doing with it.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

My son's laptop display conked off recently and I gave it to a "FNG" service guy. He replaced the broken screen and returned the laptop.
Now I find the display configuration as 780p instead of 1080p which was on the laptop when bought. The service guy tells me the replacement screens available are 780p from HP and there is no 1080p option available. Is this true? Can someone enlighten me on this subject please.
The laptop in question here is a HP BS180TX.

I'm pretty sure that what he's saying is not true, but only HP can confirm that. The official specifications page from HP show that the laptop's screen has this description - 39.62 cm(15.6) diagonal FHD SVA anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080). That means it was 1080p.

Cheers

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

After much deliberation and time, i bought the Topping E30 DAC for my desktop. It's connected to the PC via USB and the Edifier R2730DB speakers via RCA cables.

Just a day now and my his res files never sounded better. Songs i have been listening to for years by Maiden, Metallica etc etc sound oh so good now.

Still fiddling around in foobar to get dsd output. Works on the jriver medic center though.

Re: The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread

Hello good people!
Wanted advice on a recommended build since my tech know how is pretty limited.

Useage : To be used by my creative staff at work for Photoshop/Coredraw. Re-sizing/adaptations. Basic 3D rendering.
Just need a CPU , have all the other stuff. The guys are biased toward an Intel processor only.
Currently upgrading from an i3 7th Gen which gives a fair bit on lag on the basic 3D stuff.
Budget : 50-60k

This is a particularly bad time to go Intel since you'd be buying into an inferior product on a dead platform.

I'm assuming that when you say you only need a 'CPU', you mean the Cabinet/case+all the core components?

Please if you could please very briefly explain why is Intel a dead platform ? I thought they just launched the 11th gen range ? I was thinking on the lines off an I7/I9 10th gen but clearly I'm not fully informed on the matter.

And yes sir, need the whole works. Wish to re-use the monitors, keyboards etc.

Intel makes their socket incompatible with every new release even when the pin layout doesn't change. In the next generation, both the socket and pin layout are expected to change making an upgrade virtually impossible.

The new i7/i9s are among the worse value products launched in the company's history, with the new flagships failing to match, let alone beat the previous 10th gen. flagships. They also run hot and consume an insane amount of power. Avoiding them would have been a no-brainer on its own but even more so in the face of competition from the new performance leader: AMD. The i5s on the other hand are still competitive, mainly due to AMD not being able to meet demand in the mid-range, focusing on higher-margin products as well as supply issues. The total platform cost is still higher for Intel when you do a like-for-like comparision.

Here's a sample build for your consideration:-
The Desktop Computer & Configuration Thread-ps_build.jpg
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G 3.7GHz 6 Core-12 Thread Processor APU w/ Vega Graphics
Motherboad: Gigabyte B550M DS3H AMD B550 AM4
RAM: ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D60G 8GB (8GBx1) 3600MHz DDR4 RGB Memory AX4U360038G18A-ST60 x2 for 16GB
SSD: ADATA XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro 512GB PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 NVME SSD AGAMMIXS11P-512GT-C
Cabinet: Silverstone PS15 PRO ATX Mini Tower Case With Tempered Glass SST-PS15B-PRO ARGB
PSU: Antec NE550M 550W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified

This should total up to about 51k.

Good luck finding a 3080 at less than 1.5x MSRP... I also recommend you visit the local computer market in person and not depend on online prices for anything. I found that prices are better for some items locally than Quoted online.

The price quotes for the above build is 2.25 lakhs online from the custom build websites. Will cross check with local shops. 3080 is hardly available online

I forgot to add - your 1tb hdd is grossly low. I can promise you it will fill up in no time. Get 4tb at minimum. Then a 256GB ssd for AMD Stormi to pair with your HDD. (fuzedrive is better than stormi but that's 25usd). For anything in the 1tb range I would prefer an SSD only. Since 1tb nvme is going to be expensive I would recommend Crucial MX series Sata SSDs - they have PLP.

Its all over the place. Not sure why you'd select these parts for the intended use-case. It also looks like you're trying to have a bit of a theme with Gigabyte finishing kit (ironically the motherboard isn't by them, something they're actually good at making).

The list looks like what a retailer has quoted based on what they have in stock rather than what would be a good fit for you.
